Palworld is not an outlier or a black swan, it's the symptoms of the cynism that's rampant nowadays in game design. It's succes is thanks to free bad buzz advertizing, lying on its ESRB rating to open a larger public, and successfully mashing popular system together.
Only the last part deserves praise, but it also means that AAA studio are seeing this and will try to the same as pocket pair, Mash up successful game design concept with a familiar and "inspired" visual design.

There are two things that are true at the same time here.

Pokemon got popular because of the monsters and their attractive designs and the world with them in it, over any gameplay concerns.
But, if Pokemon was not a turn-based RPG, it probably wouldn't have gotten as popular as it did.
People that really want Pokemon to stop being a turn-based RPG and either go Real-Time-With-Pause or something else, have to account for what that actually means.
Pokémon is more about the monsters, hence why all the media and games that's rent in a turn based RPG format still do as well as or outsell the RPG format games. Like merch, the anime, movies, Pokémon Legends Arceus etc...
The reason why pokemon games are shit now is because the fans defend slop with zero content that don’t even feel like pokemon anymore and shit on the old games that actually have content because "muh slow", because they don’t have rom hack tier fanservice distribution and because actually playing a real pokemon game isn’t "quality of life" enough for them.

The 3D games outside Gen 7 trainer battles specifically are just as fast or more than the old games actually. Scarler Violet is slower because you can't turn off animations.

Dumbass, original dexit was gen 3 and the clusterfrick you had to go through to complete national dex. For all its fault, dexit alllows for reliably completing Dex without having to go through transfering pokemon across multiple games of the same generation.
What's ruined pokemon is the rushed production, SwSh and SV have interesting concepts but botched execution which could have avoided through longer Quality control and optimization.

Gen 3 still had all Pokémon coded into the game, you still could use them all, even if you needed more games to do so, it was still possible. You can't do that nowadays.
Anyway the rushed production is also a problem, this is why I said they can't even make good 3D games too, there's a lot of problems with Pokémon games nowadays but it sadly doesn't matter since people will buy the games anyway.
