Hmmm maybe it has something to do with one game being groundbreaking and the others just being iterative. I have this view of most games, it's very difficult for sequels to ever be better than the original in my eyes. The original had to do everything to make an impact, sequels just fix and add little things people complained about which is always less impressive than the original vision.
Dark Souls IS the sequel. Almost everything it did was done by Demon's Souls a couple years earlier, including Patches kicking players down holes in skeleton levels.
I love all FromSoft games but as an overall package DS1 just did it better than all the rest.
DS2 has a good atmosphere and arguably a better storyline but level design was less memorable boss battles took a huge downgrade. DLCs aside (which are good), I struggle to think of really good boss battles beyond Darklurker.
DS3 was equal or arguably even better gameplay wise, but the atmosphere sucked because they went way too hard into the "dark" theme which wasn't really all that present in the original game. Dark Souls, for all the gays proclaiming it as "le dark prepare to die you will suffer gayme" was actually full of heroism and optimism and lighter and warmer areas which looked beautiful.
In both cases NPCs also went downhill, with DS2 and 3 each having their pet NPC (Shanalotte and Firekeeper) that got all the writing and personality but virtually every other NPC is forgettable.
DS2 and 3 also did away with the interconnected world in favour of a bunch of linear passages from one boss battle to the next.
Beyond that, Bloodborne is the other FromSoft game that really is top notch in all regards, Sekiro is way too different imho to make a fair comparison and ER's open world feels more like a gimmick than anything else.
Miyazaki is a hack for abandoning the interconnected world design when it’s the reason bloodborne & dark souls are so good

I said it was "good", so like a 7/10 or 8/10, for me. The combat and puzzles are nothing special but the soundtrack, art direction, atmosphere, etc. make it quite memorable. There are lots of games that I'd rather play before it though.

I consider atmosphere to be a mix of factors like art direction, soundtrack, enemy variety, etc. which make areas feel unique and "real". An area like the Deku Tree, for example, would not be nearly as atmospheric if not for the music.

Everything about it is good, i genuinely couldn't tell you a bad thing about it if i wanted too. It's the fricking 5th game that every fan hates

I also couldn't tell you a bad thing about Dead Space 2, because it's incredibly safe in how good it is. Doesn't try to do anything crazy with its level design. It's enemy placements are literally so uninspired that it'll just drop you into an elevator ride where you have to fight off enemies. Generic telekinesis and time freeze powers. The most creative thing about it, and my favourite thing about it is the limb system.
Don't get me wrong, the game is genuinely great, and in my top 10, but anybody who has played videogames enough, knows that "flawless" doesn't mean exceptional. I've played games with heights that Transcend what Dead Space 2 could ever offer. But also with lower lows. And because of how powerful those heights are. It deserves greater credit for it.
I do appreciate the value Dead Space 2 has, of being uncontroversially good, for me. I really need that, and understand why people value shit like that.
But it's never a game id ever consider even being a top 5 game. Unlike what these poll results suggest Fatal Frame 2 is. So imma need more specifics. I can't imagine such a thing as a "flawless" game, that also has exceptional heights. Not a single one...well one game. Because if that's the case (which I think all these games can reasonably be called "artsy") then as much as I love these games in theory. That's definitely one of the main appeals of BS, figuring shit out for yourself, just like in Obra Dinn. Also experimental literary techniques, the game feels like one of them fancy modernist/postmodern novels. What BS takes from DS is mostly its interconnectivity, atmosphere, freedom of exploration and of course its approach to lore. The things I value the most in Souls games. Only Bloodborne, Hollow Knight and Black Souls ever made me feel the same way as when I was playing Dark Souls 1 for the first time.

Oh that actually sounds great. And hollow knight is conveniently my 2nd favourite game. I don't care about things like "atmosphere" but...hmmm maybe I should give black souls 2 a try. No. I actually do like Bloodborne a lot. There's this "special" kind of feeling that Dark Souls combat can give you, that no game afterwards has been able to replicate, even Sekiro. And it's this "desperate" feeling to combat, that you come away from, feeling like you won, by the skin of your teeth. And Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne are the only souls games to ever replicate that. I understand that to some degree this is a subjective thing. In which case I guess it's convenient that I like exploring since most of my boss fights were fought with either 1 blood vial, or zero bloodvial, where I had to use almost every tool I had, and take advantage of all the game's mechanics carefully.
I actually like Bloodborne because it feels so much like DS1, but with a twist on it.
The things that Bloodborne lacks that don't allow me to put it in my top 10 is first of all...it's awkward to have so many similar games in my top 10, so I'll cut some games out, even if they're better than 7, 8 and 9. And then, the next thing is, the lack of that interconnected macro feeling of the world design, and then the next thing, is that the tension of bonfire to bonfire runs is lost, because there's no healing resource management, because heals dont refill. Don't get me wrong, it's still good. But the estus flask is a legitimately genius mechanic. The first one of course.

Black Souls 1 is necessary to understand Black Souls 2. It's the lesser game of the two, the combat in particular gets braindead easy if you have any RPG experience, but it's still mandatory to go through it if you want to actually understand what's going on in BS2.

BS1 is 10 hours long, BS2 is 40 hours long. The problem is that BS1 is kind of mediocre (except for its ending), BS2 is the real meat of the series. Pushing through it right now in your current state and risking dropping the game entirely before you get to the good parts is not really a good idea.
Then again, you might be able to enjoy BS1 after all. It's the more divisive game of the two, with some fans of BS2 thinking it was bad and some thinking it was a really good appetiser. It takes more cues from Dark Souls than BS2, which attempts to do its own thing. BS1 has DS-like NPC questlines, which BS2 almost completely cuts.
Either way, Black Souls is a very experimental series both in terms of its game design and story. As long as you care about video game as a medium, it's worth playing through it even if you end up not liking it. It tries to push boundaries, and trying to understand its design, what works and what doesn't, can help you think more critically about other games.

No. The extreme freedom the game gives you is a part of its themes. Interactivity and the player involvement are crucial to understanding what the game is trying to do with its story.

This whole thing is a part of a wider discourse on modernism and postmodernism. I tend to dislike postmodernists because, as you said, they subvert for subversion's sake. When modernists experimented with form they tried to make it meaningful - they tried to pass off old values in new clothes, there was a sort of sincerity to their writing. Postmodernists abandoned that, at the core of their writing is a sort of nihilism and self-irony, there is no sincerity, no message to pass on, just endless derision. Though of course I am oversimplifying the issue, there's a lot of room for individual variation in each writer.
Black Souls feels more like a modernist than a postmodern game, despite pastiche being traditionally associated with postmodernism. You can tell the writer is sincere, there are no smug "look how dumb and meaningless this all is", no dumb 4th wall breaks, no subversion for subversion's sake. Even the experimental literary techniques the writer employs are narratively justified rather than being added for no particular reason.

I can't guarantee you'll like it (especially if you don't care too much about writing in vidya), things are too reliant on personal taste involved in whether you'll like something or not, but I still think you can get some decent insight into writing and game design by talking about this game due to just how unusual it is. I really dislike Camus' Stranger, but the discussions I had about it with other anons about it were very insightful.
If you end up disliking the game, I'd be more than happy to listen to why (there's a perpetually up /vrpg/ thread). The usual criticism I hear are very surface-level takes from people who haven't finished or even played it. Most of the people who fully finished BS2 end up praising it, so the discussion about the game ends up in a bit of a circlejerk. I'd be very interested in a differing opinion from someone who actually gave the game a fair shot.

You need to play and finish all endings of Black Souls 1 first, 2 is a direct sequel. Though in terms of interconnectivity BS1 is like DS2, with a hub and branching paths, while BS2 is connected like DS1. It took me around 14 hours to fully beat the first game and around 40 for the sequel.
And even if you wanted to buy it, last time I checked DLsite had problems with paypal so your only option is to pirate anyway.

I started playing, and this tense cutscene immediately starts where some old guys are talking about running the world. Something about a frick-up plague I guess. The really cool part was when they started talking about me being a secret agent.
My hopes were confrimed when the game started. Considering I'm a "nano-aug" (no idea what it means but it sounds awesome!) the fact that I die in a handful of pistol shots is pretty novel.
The guns and melee in this game are both challenging. It takes forever to aim a decent shot and bullets do little damage.
I couldn't even wait to finish playing the first level. Frick this game is awesome, and frick I love Ganker for calling this gem a great game.

Frick it man, I'm so desperate for a game to wow me. Even though Fatal Frame 2 got trumped by Persona 5, which I genuinely consider pathetic, it was at the top for long enough to have caught my attention. Something I've come to realize with "action horror". Is that they very quickly start to feel repetitive or "meaningless. For lack of better word. YES even your beloved Resident Evil 4. Despite a game like Silent Hill 2, not being particularly good, I guess or whatever, since people have decided that's how we should view it now. If has very strong and unique feeling that compels me to go further. To want to immerse myself in the experience, beyond just playing a videogame.
I realized this because I'm playing Dead Space 2 right now, and...it's really fun, but. It feels like Im going through the same motions ALL the time, and the game is incredibly narrow in its focus. It has nothing to offer but combat combat combat. Somebody in another thread put it almost perfectly. This is what he said:

I don't care about the story, and if I'm being honest, the game "filters" me because my ADHD makes it hard for me to enjoy the movieish parts, but it undoubtedly has the best stealth gameplay I've ever played, and some of the best "resource" gameplay I've ever played. Too bad, I literally can never finish it because my ADHD unironically makes me traumatized to play it, because I dread the movie parts.

I feel like the options for the poll are too limiting to give a complete picture of this kind of thing. For example, Ratchet 3's the only one you can pick from its series for some reason and I would've voted for the first game instead, but you can only pick one game for the Other option and I used it for something else.
