Demographics are changing, but the diverse younger generation is playing roblox, amoungus, fortshit, Not indie shit or AAA, and the next generation isn't gonna give frick about black fem protags because they're gonna be majority hispanic. You touch on an interesting point: the younger generations are actually playing FEWER video games than you or I ever did. They're finding a few games they like early on and sticking with them basically forever. Audiences/race aside, it's a weird new reality to navigate. I do agree that small piddly little indies are unlikely to do well in the future, barring a FOTM streamer-led burst of popularity. But even then, people will go back to Fortnite and Roblox, and it's not like you'll have anything that could sustain a new franchise or something.

Fascinatingly enough, these games, namely Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox, are really platforms for different types of games. As far as i know, the most popular mmorpg among teens today isn't WoW or FFXIV, but Minecraft Hypixel Skyblock. I assume there are similar cases for other genres as well, but I just lack knowledge of their existence due to being in a totally different bubble.

Story making, in whatever media, ultimately is an artistic and creative endeavor, so prioritizing profits and mere demographics to story making is already a failure in more than a few ways, regardless of how effective some money making tactic is.
Generations are irrelevant, they'll come and go and all will be forgotten, "the point" is what must matter, because without that weird, ill-explainable point, meaning and purpose no game will ever last.
It's greed. There's that old saying "if you're not growing you're dying", they live by that shit instead of accepting a consistent audience and consistent profits, they need more.
