Heaven forbid the neighborhood has some places without every lorry using your easement as a shortcut.

I don't even play Cities Skylins, I just watch City Planne Plays on Youtube

He's okay but only because it took a real life experience to break him out of the walkable city public transportation dick ride mantra.
Still kinda plays early game wrong.

            >top
            >slums

            >bottom
            >greenery and space

Why do people like the top again?

Because entire communities that were broken up before they were born is something they were told to be offended about.
Just look at all the pictures they posted where I suppose numerous highways finally finished construction in 2022.

            Expats? you mean immigrants?

No, it tends to mean foreigners that moved somewhere for a job they already had, but ended up staying to continue that work.

it's cause the street layouts date back to the 1800s or even before when cities grew naturally and they didn't have to worry about infrastructure for cars.

Because they were successful. They successfully broke the spirit of the people who lived in them, and trained them to think of those prisons as a secure and communal way to live. Same as any prison. And now the people who have never known anything else can't imagine anything else; or worse, actively despise the alternative. Just as they were trained to.
Zoomers in particular have a strong aversion for responsibility and individuality. They'd rather live in a cage where everything is slid in through a slot in the door, than to ever step outside and take a risk

Consider that traffic problems are made worse with grids. Every time you have an intersections you create added time and decisions.
If you insist on using grids, try making islands of grids with limited connections to larger throughways.
Hell if you want to be a real big dicked civil engineer chad, try designing a city with only ONE road. Then think about how this demonstrates braess paradox.

Civil Engineering, when done properly, is a very holistic field.
I remember the Sim City 2 manual being 15% instructions and mechanics, and 85% design philosophy, political science essays, architectural analysis and everything else you can think of.
You've got to know how a city influences its people, and defines its own soul.
Someplace like new york or hong kong is massively vertical because when you can't build out, you have to build upwards. If you're in Houston, with nothing but table flat land as far as the eye can see, you have no reason to go up, and you just sprawl out. You always get some big commercial buildings in the city center.

Its an optimal use of space on limited maps. Especially in things like sim city where buildings and zones need to be within three linear squares of a road.
In sim city 4 I pretty much do pic related. 6x6 squares, with edges left unzoned. It gives you room to add utilities, parks, bus stations, and expanding roads without having to disrupt the existing city.
A trick to limit traffic problems is to orient your residential district and delete some of the roads that create the grid itself. Funnel everything to a few major roads, where you lay your commercial buildings (commercial likes high traffic).

We already have. Look up "Megalopolis." The eastern seaboard is one maga city from Boston to DC.
I'm from Detroit, from where I am from, south to Ohio, across the northern chunk of the state to Chicago which spawls up into wisconsin is one solid urbanized sprawl.
Right now I live in Austin, Texas and in the 15-ish years I've been where the area between San Antonio and Austin is being swallowed up by infill and eventually its going to be one big connected city (like Dallas and Ft. Worth).
Look at Los Angeles. It isn't ONE city. Its a massive sprawling amalgamation that consumed everything around it.

      Anonymous

I lived in a suburb of Taipei in the 90's and I honestly loved it, but there are really specific circumstances that led to the city being like it is. Basically the whole mountain is a mountain range that comes out of the ocean, so the only place you can build cities are in a few river plains. So my neighborhood was a densely populated area but in a few miles in every direction you had lush green jungle covered mountains coming right out of the city. Everything was dense and packed in so you had everything you needed within walking distance, or a bus ride. Public transportation was great, and if you needed to get across the city you could take a bus to the MRT station and get across town faster than driving.
If you didn't want the hassle you could just flag down a cab.
It was pretty comfy, but most cities just aren't like that, and are fricking nightmares.

because the people that would have objected got bought out by giant international megacorps funded by saudis and chinese billionaires for overinflated prices. and those that were left to try and fight it got nowhere with local politicians who were more than willing to get their palms greased and campaign efforts funded by those same corporations.

by that point the cost of living downtown has skyrocketed, so homeowners and small business owners were pushed out of the districts that could realistically vote to prevent it from happening, making it fair game for more megacorps to buy up what was left.

and now, because these mega corps are the only thing that exist in what was once prime real estate, politicians either bend over backwards to appease them, or are pushed out by these mega corps financing inflated campaign efforts of politicians who are willing to act in their best interest over the people living there.

I dont think that kind of thing was happening back in the 60s already, was it?

            Anonymous

It has been a thing since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Henry Ford was doing it through the midwest all through the great depression. Weapons manufacturers like Boeing and what went on to become Lockheed Martin were doing it through WW2 into the 50 and 60s. By the 70s American Market Influence had gone global (thanks to Nixon opening up China to the west, and slowly wearing down the Soviets), so a lot of it slowed down in favor of doing it overseas. By the 80s, with Reagan busting down the last bit of corporate regulation we saw a huge spike in it's return. Only this time it was international corporations coming back to take over American cities thanks to the massive amounts of American money funneled into business ventures that the CCP and Saudi Crown took over for themselves to reap the profits. Then the 90s came, and now the Russians were our "friends", so we did it with them too, leading to a massive wealth boom for the holdovers of the Communist regime, that they then turned around and invested back into doing it on American soil today.

This shit has been going on pretty much since the dawn of humans using currency as a resource. The brits used this tactic via the East Indian Trading Company for centuries in order to colonize half the world.

it's called eminent domain, the government can seize "your" property and do whatever it wants with it. it just has to pay you for it, but the government decides how much it's worth. it could even hand that property over to a developer to make money on it.

            Anonymous

there is not a large-scale demand for rail. it also really is massively expensive, way more expensive than equivalent projects in Europe, probably because of the politicians that do undertake these projects are mostly shitlib and treat it as a giveaway to the unions that support them. See how expensive NYC's second avenue subway expansion was, or the new project to dig more tunnels under the hudson, or the disaster of California HSR.

              Anonymous

I agree, but more pointing out how emminent domain is largely unpopular and particularly gridlocked due to the policies passed in the 60s, as revenge for the 50s. Plus those same politicians that want to appraise a home the highest possible amount to increase their property tax revenue would have to pay out those exorbitant appraisals.

The collective hubris of our politicians and the compounded moronation of laws from nearly SIX DECADES ago is in the way of these homosexuals that want to transform these useless cities again.

Legal mandates that for X occupancy for a building you needed to provide Y number of parking spaces, where Y is greater than X. In theory it wasn't a bad idea (you don't make a massive building and not consider where the people who work there are going to park), but in practice it blighted dense urban areas with parking lots and structures that cost too much because they run under capacity.

Cars buck broke America. Before, highways never went smack dab right between cities, even middling ones. Then the car industry via zoning laws and paying for huge road projects encroached into cities so now EVERYONE needed to have a car, even if you're going somewhere 20 minutes away walking because you'd literally be unable to cross megaways on foot and public transportation is purposely underfunded. Example route 66, proper highway connecting 2 places but was abandoned because you had to take a slight detour which doesn't even lose much time since with the sheer amount of cars today that slight detour is now spent in traffic, which is why national air travel also skyrocketed with higher levels of mass motorization.

Public transportation used to be great in Toronto until the Fords started gutting it, as well as the bicycle incentives. It's still functional but it is a shell of it's former self in only 10 years. Toronto's got plenty of crime, go there dressed well as a white guy and someone will try and mug you

Cities Skylines is so soulless. All the vanilla buildings are so dull and boring, like someone googled "house" for 5 seconds and then tried to make what they saw from memory. Anyone who says "download mods" is a cuck who doesn't realise that the devs are so lazy and have zero vision that they have to pay 60 buck plus tip to have people fix their game for free. Even the first Sim City has more personality and detail to it's buildings and it's another reason why SC4 is still the best. Maxis went out to Chicago, NYC, LA and France to study their building styles in great detail for their game. They even remade their own homes. It's why even when you make a shit city in SC4 it still comes out looking good, like you could almost live there because they put so much detail in to how everything looks. Skylines has none of that which is weird since cities in motion had lots of detail for their buildings. Hopfully they improve with skylines 2 but I have little hope for it.

Anon's highway interchange could probably be simplified a lot if they nuked it and started over, but there's no fun in that.

does winding your roads make them less desirable for travel pathing? Is that a thing in CS? How do people decide which traffic route to take? Does distance, or traffic congestion/travel time play a role?/

          Only shortest distance in CS.
CS2 adds congestion and travel time and condition of the destination in that consideration. Travel preferences are affected by the age of the traveler too.

I work in an area that is largely industrial and noticed recently that the roads are way, way too narrow. They've got 18 wheel transport trucks navigating back and forth through these small 2 lane streets all day long, carefully turning into and backing out of even tinier cargo bays. It makes me wonder if the area wasn't initially intended to be so industrial, or if it's just poor planning, or if maybe they didn't expect the area to accommodate such large vehicles.
I had the thought in my head that if I'd mismanaged an area so hard in a game like Civ or Cities Skylines that I'd probably just restart and try again with the knowledge of how to plan out an area in mind. Like I remember making these sorts of errors when I was first playing these city-builder games because I didn't fully understand the scope of the game, or how things would develop over time. But then I realized that in real life, replanning a whole area like this would cost billions of dollars and take decades to reconstruct. You can't just reload a save or start over... it's real life. Some city planners know what they're doing, and others are booting up SimCity for the first time and mismanaging shit. It was kind of funny to realize that I was living/working in an area that's so clearly a civic engineer's first time playing. Made me appreciate how shitty the area was a little bit more, like looking at a five-year-old's crayon drawing stuck onto the fridge. Nice try, buddy!

Cities Skylines is theoretically able to design utopias.
Real city planning is a series of cash grabs. Sell land here, get paid by investors there, cut a tax deal there. Some arch-leftist youtuber makes some good points about how sprawl isn't economically sustainable: developing new batches of land grants short term cash until rebuilding utilites later eats all of that and more.

Is that Not Just Bikes? I've seen a few of his videos and he mentions similar things, which of course makes sense in hindsight, but when I hear what he has to say I always think, "okay, so what do we do?"
He critiques urban sprawl with good reason, and contrasts it a lot with the civilian-minded, walkable streets in Amsterdam. Midwestern cities are atrocious, but they're here. What do we do about it?

Youre right, you can look at modern cities right now and see what they do better than american cities. Europe generally across the board mogs
            >BUT LE Black folk I WANT LE SUBURBS!!!!
even their suburbs mog american suburbs and they have great commuter trains that go into the city.
            >BUT THATS LE EUROPE
okay, mexico city is a great example
            >BUT LE BROWNS!!!
okay you can take a look at a city like montréal which isnt a super dense city like those in europe or new york but a big core of the city is in dense little neighborhoods serviced by either metro or bus the entire day. they even opened phase 1 of their new light rail, the REM, that runs practically all day and was built in six years including delays plus covid with the rest of the line projected to be finished by the end of next year.

americans are brainwashed to worship the car.

              >even their suburbs mog american suburbs and they have great commuter trains that go into the city.
Nearly the entirety of chicagoland can get into the city with the local trains, and there is commuter rail available to get in from neighboring states too.
Even detroit has this shit, it's not uncommon at all.

But you miss the part where these cities no longer have a reason to visit them, even for work? Europeans are stuck with their landmass and after already ruining their natural spaces, can only build more densely.

Your dismissal of concerns is also why you won't make any progress in your tirade and just get met with resistance. Especially when these cities already don't have a reason to implement anything outside of trying to keep their own jobs intact.

again small euro towns>american meth towns
              innawoods europe>innawoods america
you literally lose on all fronts

You greatly underestimate the scale of the US.

                >chicagoland
yes chicago is one of the rare american cities with infrastructure for public transportation and it is very much uncommon. not only that but their commuter trains run very infrequently compared to those in europe which have trains for nearly all hours of the day.

                >Europeans are stuck with their landmass and after already ruining their natural spaces, can only build more densely.
and this is even more reason for americans to build more densely why the frick would you be happy that your places of living waste so much of the space and natural beauty of your country? ridiculous.

your question is why should we build dense cities? well to answer your original question, to save the environment, to better serve the public with multiple options on how they can move around and to build stronger communities. its far easier to do all of this when your place of living allows you to live more freely.

                Anonymous

                >to build stronger communities
This does not happen. American hubris precludes us to hate each other. There is no community past your hobbies (note: most don't have any), especially when stuck in a dense city.

                >For the environment
Shitholes like CA decided to redirect an entire river to their cities, destroying an ecosystem and drying out a lake.
There are numerous farm acreage outside of my town up for sale, developers buy them up and put up some of the closest packed single family homes that I'd wish they'd just build townhouses instead.
I ask then, who is responsible for what the developers are doing? They're the ones that got ahold of these city centers you keep complaining about.
Otherwise, the feds own most of the natural land. Local offices only give up a portion of it with the help of a hefty bribe.

Again, you have no idea how massive the US is, the problems and solutions are completely different for a reason. The highway system was necessitated out of goods transportation since there were only a few places that made sense for freight trains.
                >Parking lots
An old stupid law that is only just now getting attention plus, get this, why do you suppose there are no trees in most of our parking lots? It was over crime concerns
The US is plagued with numerous old laws that keep these stupid regulations intact. Most politicians grew up with that bullshit so they never see anything wrong with any of it.

                >Crams the entire population of California in one city
                >Has congested but reliable public transport

America had one of the most extensive networks of rail in the world. Then it got torn down because the car was deemed better. Still shows that it was possible to do so and you dont have to build freeways right in the middle of the city.

It's pretty obvious to those who aren't self hating cattle, being able to walk around a city freely rather than speeding down set lines to and from work or the grocery store. You've heard the solutions you just don't like them, zone for more and higher density apartments rather than exclusively single family suburbs, shrink or remove lanes to make transit lanes or bike paths, narrow roads or add claustrophobic lining and street pathing to discourage high speeds that make it dangerous for anyone outside of a car, remove obscene parking minimums so aforementioned apartments or even business can be built on the valuable land.

yea bro can you imagine if they actually developed public transport to help move people around and built for density instead of bulldozing everything for parking lots? that could never ever ever work at all or anywhere basically. the only city viable is the houston dallas city with freeways right in the middle of downtown.

At least they finally finished those highways in 2022. It's hard to believe public works take 75 years to complete in this day and age.

Buses are the worst form of public transportation.

      >The highway system was necessitated out of goods transportation since there were only a few places that made sense for freight trains.
America had one of the most extensive networks of rail in the world. Then it got torn down because the car was deemed better. Still shows that it was possible to do so and you dont have to build freeways right in the middle of the city.

Rail was still spread the frick apart. And why should they keep up old rail once standards update? Freight companies are only carrying some things to specific destinations now too.

          Anonymous

So? That doesn't preclude anyone b***hing about this shit from implementing it in the game. Most of the traffic on my roads are freight and goods delivery vehicles, since I make enough pathways to make walking to stores/jobs preferred to taking roadways. My metro makes a profit it's so popular, since the destinations all make sense. But I'm always here telling these childless psychos to frick off with their stupidity.

CS2 will be even better for it, but guaranteed these types won't be able to figure it out still.

i remember playing that, if i recall staggering your grids so every intersection has no more than a "T" instead of a "+" results in zero traffic problems.

Usually left turners and crossing pedestrians can frick up an intersection hard. But one of the easiest ways to alleviate congestion is to start using pedestrian bridges.

This isn't due to popular demand by the way. This happens because American auto manufacturers have to adhere to a moronic guideline called the CAFE standard.

Never mix business and governing folks.

                Anonymous

Rather than making more ecological cars, they instead make big "light trucks" to loophole the guidelines, which government doesn't challenge.
I guess oil corpos and car manufacturers are too poor to make more ecological cars and they just have to make big trucks bigger every year. Of course they have no influence on politicians, someone please help Ford and Dodge! They are just small family businesses!
What? Every other auto manufacturer in the world can easily reach the emission limits? Wait, and American auto manufacturers also sell their smaller cars in Europe where they apply the emission limits and rules?
Uhh... Gotta make trucks, no other choice! Commies are coming to take your trucks! Help me PragerU

Didn't Volkswagen get in massive trouble with the EU for basically programming their cars computers to trick emissions tests?
You could also technically make a giant truck that's electric. Ford did that just that with the Lightning.
You don't dislike trucks because of ecological reasons or any actual reasons.
You simply dislike them because you detest people who prefer to own such a vehicle.

                Anonymous

Actually, if you look at the CAFE standards then you would realize how it's not economical for them to make smaller cars because of two things.
                1. It's very hard to reach a fuel economy of 55+ in a conventionally sized car.
                2. The way that good fuel economy is calculated for the standard is moronic.
I agree, auto manufacturers should be fighting the government or doing anything they can to produce vehicles people actually want but business school students run these companies now so the only way to get people to do anything is to threaten their income.

I don't really care. I don't live in cities nor desire to.
What blows me away is the sheer amount of utter fuming.
What the hell is the deal? You live in le 15 minute eco friendly city? Good, then shut the frick up.

Can we go back to talking about the video game now?
Skylines is comfy and I'm wondering if any of the DLCs are worth getting.

Buy the game when it's on sale for next to nothing then just use a DLC unlocker.

      >DLCs
Only if you specifically need and want to use a network, like trams or lycra lanes. Otherwise most of them just add minigames to something the game already took care of (university, industry), adds cheat buildings (green cities), or feeds on your decoration autism (parklife).
That said, you should play the game first to get an idea what you want before just unlocking anything. Same applies to mods and other workshop assets.

Also, Cities Skylines 2 is slated for October release and it's looking to be much more thought out compared to the original.

why aren't there more parking garages? you always see these huge lots in the middle of an american urban area that could be anything else, a garage could hold like 10 lots of cars vertically.

Maybe land is not that valuable? What the guy would gain in free space with a parking garage would be useless because there is no point in building anything on the site and selling the land may not be advantageous. I don't know. It must be because of that.

Why do you care about how a different country plans their city and cry like an autistic child over it?
