When people moved out to the suburbs cities centers had a hard time competing against new suburban malls and office parks with miles of parking, so many of these apartments and shops fell into disuse and it just made sense to tear them down for parking and highways so that the businesses left could still attract some suburbanites.

Consider that traffic problems are made worse with grids. Every time you have an intersections you create added time and decisions.

Civil Engineering, when done properly, is a very holistic field.
I remember the Sim City 2 manual being 15% instructions and mechanics, and 85% design philosophy, political science essays, architectural analysis and everything else you can think of.
You've got to know how a city influences its people, and defines its own soul.
Someplace like new york or hong kong is massively vertical because when you can't build out, you have to build upwards. If you're in Houston, with nothing but table flat land as far as the eye can see, you have no reason to go up, and you just sprawl out. You always get some big commercial buildings in the city center.
Its an optimal use of space on limited maps. Especially in things like sim city where buildings and zones need to be within three linear squares of a road.
In sim city 4 I pretty much do pic related. 6x6 squares, with edges left unzoned. It gives you room to add utilities, parks, bus stations, and expanding roads without having to disrupt the existing city.
A trick to limit traffic problems is to orient your residential district and delete some of the roads that create the grid itself. Funnel everything to a few major roads, where you lay your commercial buildings (commercial likes high traffic).
I used to have the same problem but then mods fixed it. Grab Designator Shapes. It makes it 10x easier to build non-rectangular shapes so you don't feel compelled to box up out of laziness
Still waiting for a city sim with non-square plots so I can completely avoid grids or make imperfect ones and not lose a ton of tax revenue. Intentionally avoiding grids in CS feels like a handicap.

I lived in a suburb of Taipei in the 90's and I honestly loved it, but there are really specific circumstances that led to the city being like it is. Basically the whole mountain is a mountain range that comes out of the ocean, so the only place you can build cities are in a few river plains. So my neighborhood was a densely populated area but in a few miles in every direction you had lush green jungle covered mountains coming right out of the city. Everything was dense and packed in so you had everything you needed within walking distance, or a bus ride. Public transportation was great, and if you needed to get across the city you could take a bus to the MRT station and get across town faster than driving.
If you didn't want the hassle you could just flag down a cab.
It was pretty comfy, but most cities just aren't like that, and are fricking nightmares.
What's the point of building your city like this? At that point you're no longer playing a game but just brainlessly drawing rectangles so you could just as well do it in Paint. Is the point of it just to post a screenshot on Ganker to farm for (You)s?

Then the 90s came, and now the Russians were our "friends", so we did it with them too, leading to a massive wealth boom for the holdovers of the Communist regime, that they then turned around and invested back into doing it on American soil today.

Legal mandates that for X occupancy for a building you needed to provide Y number of parking spaces, where Y is greater than X. In theory it wasn't a bad idea (you don't make a massive building and not consider where the people who work there are going to park), but in practice it blighted dense urban areas with parking lots and structures that cost too much because they run under capacity.

Cars buck broke America. Before, highways never went smack dab right between cities, even middling ones. Then the car industry via zoning laws and paying for huge road projects encroached into cities so now EVERYONE needed to have a car, even if you're going somewhere 20 minutes away walking because you'd literally be unable to cross megaways on foot and public transportation is purposely underfunded. Example route 66, proper highway connecting 2 places but was abandoned because you had to take a slight detour which doesn't even lose much time since with the sheer amount of cars today that slight detour is now spent in traffic, which is why national air travel also skyrocketed with higher levels of mass motorization.
Unfortunately we still have speed limits and politicians skimp on build quality once they found out how much the autobahn costs to build/maintain.

Public transportation used to be great in Toronto until the Fords started gutting it, as well as the bicycle incentives. It's still functional but it is a shell of it's former self in only 10 years. Toronto's got plenty of crime, go there dressed well as a white guy and someone will try and mug you
Toronto does massive parking garages integrated into the city so they don't have to tear down as many buildings to make up for parking. It's still really shitty looking and they go high enough that it causes intense wind to blow through the upper levels
Cities Skylines is so soulless. All the vanilla buildings are so dull and boring, like someone googled "house" for 5 seconds and then tried to make what they saw from memory. Anyone who says "download mods" is a cuck who doesn't realise that the devs are so lazy and have zero vision that they have to pay 60 buck plus tip to have people fix their game for free. Even the first Sim City has more personality and detail to it's buildings and it's another reason why SC4 is still the best. Maxis went out to Chicago, NYC, LA and France to study their building styles in great detail for their game. They even remade their own homes. It's why even when you make a shit city in SC4 it still comes out looking good, like you could almost live there because they put so much detail in to how everything looks. Skylines has none of that which is weird since cities in motion had lots of detail for their buildings. Hopfully they improve with skylines 2 but I have little hope for it.
I can't get into Cities Skylines despite loving Sim City 4. I don't know why, everything is better but the way the lots look and progress annoys me for some reason. I enjoy what it tries to accomplish but something simply feels.... missing

Only shortest distance in CS.
CS2 adds congestion and travel time and condition of the destination in that consideration. Travel preferences are affected by the age of the traveler too.
I'm excited for CS2 but I know it's not going to have the depth of modded CS from the get go, I'm honestly pretty disappointed bikes aren't in by default. Still looks good, but I think I'm going to be coming back to CS for at least a while

I work in an area that is largely industrial and noticed recently that the roads are way, way too narrow. They've got 18 wheel transport trucks navigating back and forth through these small 2 lane streets all day long, carefully turning into and backing out of even tinier cargo bays. It makes me wonder if the area wasn't initially intended to be so industrial, or if it's just poor planning, or if maybe they didn't expect the area to accommodate such large vehicles.
I had the thought in my head that if I'd mismanaged an area so hard in a game like Civ or Cities Skylines that I'd probably just restart and try again with the knowledge of how to plan out an area in mind. Like I remember making these sorts of errors when I was first playing these city-builder games because I didn't fully understand the scope of the game, or how things would develop over time. But then I realized that in real life, replanning a whole area like this would cost billions of dollars and take decades to reconstruct. You can't just reload a save or start over... it's real life. Some city planners know what they're doing, and others are booting up SimCity for the first time and mismanaging shit. It was kind of funny to realize that I was living/working in an area that's so clearly a civic engineer's first time playing. Made me appreciate how shitty the area was a little bit more, like looking at a five-year-old's crayon drawing stuck onto the fridge. Nice try, buddy!

Real city planning is a series of cash grabs. Sell land here, get paid by investors there, cut a tax deal there. Some arch-leftist youtuber makes some good points about how sprawl isn't economically sustainable: developing new batches of land grants short term cash until rebuilding utilites later eats all of that and more.

okay you can take a look at a city like montréal which isnt a super dense city like those in europe or new york but a big core of the city is in dense little neighborhoods serviced by either metro or bus the entire day. they even opened phase 1 of their new light rail, the REM, that runs practically all day and was built in six years including delays plus covid with the rest of the line projected to be finished by the end of next year.

Nearly the entirety of chicagoland can get into the city with the local trains, and there is commuter rail available to get in from neighboring states too.

yes chicago is one of the rare american cities with infrastructure for public transportation and it is very much uncommon. not only that but their commuter trains run very infrequently compared to those in europe which have trains for nearly all hours of the day.

It's pretty obvious to those who aren't self hating cattle, being able to walk around a city freely rather than speeding down set lines to and from work or the grocery store. You've heard the solutions you just don't like them, zone for more and higher density apartments rather than exclusively single family suburbs, shrink or remove lanes to make transit lanes or bike paths, narrow roads or add claustrophobic lining and street pathing to discourage high speeds that make it dangerous for anyone outside of a car, remove obscene parking minimums so aforementioned apartments or even business can be built on the valuable land.

Actually, if you look at the CAFE standards then you would realize how it's not economical for them to make smaller cars because of two things.
1. It's very hard to reach a fuel economy of 55+ in a conventionally sized car.
2. The way that good fuel economy is calculated for the standard is moronic.

It’s weird how I always default back to it like some kind of mental illness.
Its an optimal use of space on limited maps. Especially in things like sim city where buildings and zones need to be within three linear squares of a road.
In sim city 4 I pretty much do pic related. 6x6 squares, with edges left unzoned. It gives you room to add utilities, parks, bus stations, and expanding roads without having to disrupt the existing city.
A trick to limit traffic problems is to orient your residential district and delete some of the roads that create the grid itself. Funnel everything to a few major roads, where you lay your commercial buildings (commercial likes high traffic).
at least have some road hierarchy

I used to have the same problem but then mods fixed it. Grab Designator Shapes. It makes it 10x easier to build non-rectangular shapes so you don't feel compelled to box up out of laziness

Still waiting for a city sim with non-square plots so I can completely avoid grids or make imperfect ones and not lose a ton of tax revenue. Intentionally avoiding grids in CS feels like a handicap.

I'm from Detroit, from where I am from, south to Ohio, across the northern chunk of the state to Chicago which spawls up into wisconsin is one solid urbanized sprawl.
Right now I live in Austin, Texas and in the 15-ish years I've been where the area between San Antonio and Austin is being swallowed up by infill and eventually its going to be one big connected city (like Dallas and Ft. Worth).

I love Cities Skylines and city builders and all that, but god I would never live in a city in real life.
What's the deal with me?
I lived in a suburb of Taipei in the 90's and I honestly loved it, but there are really specific circumstances that led to the city being like it is. Basically the whole mountain is a mountain range that comes out of the ocean, so the only place you can build cities are in a few river plains. So my neighborhood was a densely populated area but in a few miles in every direction you had lush green jungle covered mountains coming right out of the city. Everything was dense and packed in so you had everything you needed within walking distance, or a bus ride. Public transportation was great, and if you needed to get across the city you could take a bus to the MRT station and get across town faster than driving.
If you didn't want the hassle you could just flag down a cab.
It was pretty comfy, but most cities just aren't like that, and are fricking nightmares.

It has been a thing since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Henry Ford was doing it through the midwest all through the great depression. Weapons manufacturers like Boeing and what went on to become Lockheed Martin were doing it through WW2 into the 50 and 60s. By the 70s American Market Influence had gone global (thanks to Nixon opening up China to the west, and slowly wearing down the Soviets), so a lot of it slowed down in favor of doing it overseas. By the 80s, with Reagan busting down the last bit of corporate regulation we saw a huge spike in it's return. Only this time it was international corporations coming back to take over American cities thanks to the massive amounts of American money funneled into business ventures that the CCP and Saudi Crown took over for themselves to reap the profits. Then the 90s came, and now the Russians were our "friends", so we did it with them too, leading to a massive wealth boom for the holdovers of the Communist regime, that they then turned around and invested back into doing it on American soil today.

Legal mandates that for X occupancy for a building you needed to provide Y number of parking spaces, where Y is greater than X. In theory it wasn't a bad idea (you don't make a massive building and not consider where the people who work there are going to park), but in practice it blighted dense urban areas with parking lots and structures that cost too much because they run under capacity.

Cars buck broke America. Before, highways never went smack dab right between cities, even middling ones. Then the car industry via zoning laws and paying for huge road projects encroached into cities so now EVERYONE needed to have a car, even if you're going somewhere 20 minutes away walking because you'd literally be unable to cross megaways on foot and public transportation is purposely underfunded. Example route 66, proper highway connecting 2 places but was abandoned because you had to take a slight detour which doesn't even lose much time since with the sheer amount of cars today that slight detour is now spent in traffic, which is why national air travel also skyrocketed with higher levels of mass motorization.
Abandoning route 66 was the biggest mistake America ever made.

Cities Skylines is so soulless. All the vanilla buildings are so dull and boring, like someone googled "house" for 5 seconds and then tried to make what they saw from memory. Anyone who says "download mods" is a cuck who doesn't realise that the devs are so lazy and have zero vision that they have to pay 60 buck plus tip to have people fix their game for free. Even the first Sim City has more personality and detail to it's buildings and it's another reason why SC4 is still the best. Maxis went out to Chicago, NYC, LA and France to study their building styles in great detail for their game. They even remade their own homes. It's why even when you make a shit city in SC4 it still comes out looking good, like you could almost live there because they put so much detail in to how everything looks. Skylines has none of that which is weird since cities in motion had lots of detail for their buildings. Hopfully they improve with skylines 2 but I have little hope for it.

I work in an area that is largely industrial and noticed recently that the roads are way, way too narrow. They've got 18 wheel transport trucks navigating back and forth through these small 2 lane streets all day long, carefully turning into and backing out of even tinier cargo bays. It makes me wonder if the area wasn't initially intended to be so industrial, or if it's just poor planning, or if maybe they didn't expect the area to accommodate such large vehicles.
I had the thought in my head that if I'd mismanaged an area so hard in a game like Civ or Cities Skylines that I'd probably just restart and try again with the knowledge of how to plan out an area in mind. Like I remember making these sorts of errors when I was first playing these city-builder games because I didn't fully understand the scope of the game, or how things would develop over time. But then I realized that in real life, replanning a whole area like this would cost billions of dollars and take decades to reconstruct. You can't just reload a save or start over... it's real life. Some city planners know what they're doing, and others are booting up SimCity for the first time and mismanaging shit. It was kind of funny to realize that I was living/working in an area that's so clearly a civic engineer's first time playing. Made me appreciate how shitty the area was a little bit more, like looking at a five-year-old's crayon drawing stuck onto the fridge. Nice try, buddy!

Real city planning is a series of cash grabs. Sell land here, get paid by investors there, cut a tax deal there. Some arch-leftist youtuber makes some good points about how sprawl isn't economically sustainable: developing new batches of land grants short term cash until rebuilding utilites later eats all of that and more.

Only if you specifically need and want to use a network, like trams or lycra lanes. Otherwise most of them just add minigames to something the game already took care of (university, industry), adds cheat buildings (green cities), or feeds on your decoration autism (parklife).
That said, you should play the game first to get an idea what you want before just unlocking anything. Same applies to mods and other workshop assets.
Also, Cities Skylines 2 is slated for October release and it's looking to be much more thought out compared to the original.
