They gave this game a huge update and idk if it will be free forever, but it's free right now. They added four new multiplayer maps, cut content, beta skins, and they fixed bugs, and added controller support, they even restored the original main menu (from the WON era of the game). Pretty cool 25th anniversary update, but it leaves the question, does it hold up in 2023? You may already know but there's a faithful recreation of the game by fans called Black Mesa which does way more than this update.
>does it hold up in 2023?
Lol it’s free. It’s an actual update and fix of the game for its 25th anniversary, for a game everyone already owns.
I don't
What I mean is, this update while significant for fans of the game, is completely inconsequential to newbies, so there is no way on earth they are charging for it. It’s essentially a bug fix patch dressed up as a slightly larger event. This is PR for valve, and good PR at that.
I own it now!
Based.
I wonder when the Half-Life 3 rumors will ramp up again now.
They did an unannounced 25th anniversary update for the original game, a feature length documentary on its creation, and the Steam Deck is selling like hot cakes. Perfect storm to bring up HL3 again. I think it’s gonna happen.
Hopes for HL3 died with Alyx.
I never played it and don’t know the story. Is there a narrative reason why you say this? Alyx just seemed like a reason to sell Index’s.
The limited edition Steam Deck also has an orange theme, a clue perhaps, for a new half life game.
HL3 is never gonna happen.
Well the paradox is that HL3 actually happened, it just was called Alyx for marketing, branding and corporate reasons.
You see, a multi-billionaire company that was at one point a monopolist in digital PC games distribution, and it steered of games themselves many years ago. Valve is a sale business, not a game one.
The potentional flop of such highly anticipated title as HL3 could influence their stocks and investors. The risk is just too high to cater to some old-school gamers that still remember the franchise. Do zoomers wait eagerly for HL3? They don't even know what the frick it is. HL2 came out in 2004 for frick's sake.
>their stocks and investors
they don't have those moron
They do. Valve is a corporation. All corporations have stock and stock owners. Private vs public trading has nothing to do with anything.
HL1 was made to break Valve into the PC gaming space with a technical wonder.
HL2 was made to push Steam, their digital storefront.
Alyx was made to push their Index VR sets.
HL3 will come when Valve wants to sell something else. Maybe when SteamDeck 2 comes out. If it was a good game, and it was exclusive to Steamdeck 2/PC, it would sell units just like Half-Life has done for them before.
I do see where you’re coming from though. We have all lived long enough now to know that if a franchise is profitable, it doesn’t stay dead forever.
HOLY BASED
I wouldn't own it if not for an accident. I put in my brother's CD Key in 2013 just to see. It gave me the game and its expansion packs too. Was cool to see, not sure why even. It was just the base game with no expansion, but I reckon it was one of those special versions, platinum?
Neat!
It's better than Doom
Honestly I do not see that as a high bar, Doom was displaced by Quake within like, three years? It was crazy how fast technology was advancing in the 90's.
>Doom was displaced by Quake
Then why does Doom have a community four times as big and active today? The retro FPS general here might as well be the Doom general
Idk why they're doing that, the world moved on.
half-life is the single player fps GOAT for story
gameplay GOAT is __Quake__
Quake was never good
your mom was never good but that didn't stop your dad from (unfortunately) nutting in her
What do goats have to do with video games? Is this an animal farm reference?
>does it hold up in 2023?
Half Life is inferior to games like Doom and Rise of the Triad and ushered in the era of shitty linear scripted shooters
i would erase half life and valve from existence if only to stop the flood of movie games.
Obsessed homosexual, take meds already
Also ROTT is shit.
Nice, they've made a documentary about it too
This is just for Half-Life and not Opposing Force right? Always loved OF online.
Its free for one more day but of course you have to make a ste*m account which is /notretro/
The water in software mode is so good.
Did they patch the retail version? That shit is buggy as hell.

huh
Oh cool they updated Opposing Force and Blue Shift as well. The shadow command is working too, just as glitch as always though.
Wish they also published the source code of the game/engine as Free Software.
