They purposefully sabotaged this pokemon.

They purposefully sabotaged this pokemon. The frick you typing aside, if it had some of its defensive stats put into its health it would just be stronger at the same BST because of how the damage calculations work, and might be able to do something with metal burst.

It is such a strange choice of stats. I would make it
    80
    50
    140
    75
    120
    30
Give it calm mind and any other of these moves it doesn't get
    Calm mind
    Power gem
    Flash cannon
    Earth power

      >40
      >125
      >20 (it's a castle/fortress wall, why is it even moving)
still dies to karate chop and mud slap, but at least it can try to use Stone Miss, now

The irony of Rock/Steel being such a shitty defensive typing will never not get to me.

It's the worst best defensive typing in the game and that just.... hurts. A legitimately broken as frick type combination that's completely ruined because the few things it happens to be weak to are very fricking strong and commonly used.

Honestly Pokemon having types was a mistake, Pokemon should have had unique lists of weaknesses and resistances instead.
    >NOOOOO THATS TOO HARD TO REMEMBER
And it being the current case fricks over shit like this
It's literally impossible to make a good rock/steel type outside of complete bullshit

This would enable Game Freak to certain give Pokémon a frickload of weaknesses outside of what is possible now because "le weak" or "le extinct".

Tyranitar is good despite its shit typing, you just have to get a little creative.

Honestly though what is the more important stat, HP or Defense(s)?

      Anonymous

Defenses. But you need a good typing, movepool, and/or ability to back those defenses up.

      Anonymous

Defense and Special Defense reduce the damage the Pokémon receives from attacks. Higher the defense stat, the less damage received. Obviously this doesn't take resistances or weaknesses into account.

      Anonymous

its a big "it depends". your overall bulk is calculated by HP x defense, so if you have 10 points to spare on a blissey you'd be better off putting it in defense. on bastiodon, HP investment is better.
Of course you also have two defensive stats so if something has 100 points in HP and both defenses you'd invest in HP. this is why defensive sets usually have a lot of HP, since the cost of investing into defenses is twice as high in many cases.

      Anonymous

You get diminishing return on investment. The higher a defensive stat is, the less impactful each EV added is.
Because of this, high defenses and low HP are generally better than low defenses and high HP, because you get more out of investing in 1 stat, and it's the stat that will always matter when you're getting hit.

          Anonymous

Maybe I explained it badly. Here's some examples.
Shuckle has high defenses and low HP. It benefits more from investing in HP than in defenses.
          >0 SpA Mew Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Shuckle: 46-55 (18.8 - 22.5%) -- possible 5HKO
          >0 SpA Mew Psychic vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Shuckle: 42-49 (23.2 - 27%) -- 47.9% chance to 4HKO
Blissey has high HP and low defenses. It benefits more from investing in defenses than HP.
          >0 Atk Mew Psycho Cut vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Blissey: 316-373 (44.2 - 52.2%) -- 17.6% chance to 2HKO
          >0 Atk Mew Psycho Cut vs. 0 HP / 252 Def Blissey: 150-177 (23 - 27.1%) -- 51.4% chance to 4HKO

    >ability: Impenetrable Wall
    >it and a partner in a double battle take 5% reduced damage for each weakness among themselves, cannot exceed 50% reduction
    or
    >strikes back for 1.5x immediately upon being hit for 4x effectiveness, 0.5x for a 2x effective move
and Metal Burst finally has counter's priority

      Anonymous

this thing's the inspiration for the first, convoluted and poorly worded ability

      Anonymous

Steel/Rock's only got 3 weaknesses, so you'd be jumping through a lot of hoops just to make a situationally better combination of Friend Guard and Filter and it'd still be stuck on a mon with no offensive or utility prospects unlike the Abilities it's trying to combine. And the second version would be damn useless, Bastiodon usually doesn't survive a Fighting or Ground hit to begin with without Sturdy and I don't think I've ever seen anyone intentionally try to kill it with Water moves outside in-game battles, not to mention it doesn't have much health which makes counter moves inherently less effective which is the main reason Metal Burst isn't ran (it doesn't need negative priority, Bastiodon's already got 30 speed it's not outspeeding shit).

        Anonymous

        >Steel/Rock's only got 3 weaknesses
you're right, the 2 being 4x made me think otherwise
I haven't touched a game in years tbh
the built in counter that is the second ability was meant to go off even if it fainted to the move, in my head, effectively being sort of like Aftermath, in a way, as well.
        >it doesn't need negative priority
even if it's not outspeeding the opposing pokemon, it's still laughable when it does go before something like Vital Throw, Avalanche, Focus Punch, etc.
it feels like an oversight, or perhaps very unneeded "balancing" that it doesn't

Like what were they thinking with that HP stat, how could Metal Burst even work in Gen 4? remember Sturdy only works since Gen 5

  15. 2 years ago

Filter would be a massive help, a boost to the hp and slap it's atk and def to 50 each.
    Hp 90
    Atk 50
    def 145
    Satk 50
    SpDef 140
    speed 30 (dump stat)

It's typing is bad, but it's not the worst thing in the world, if he had an ability to go with it. Filter, or sand spit and shore up.
Filter actually doesn't save it that much it's typing leaves it that open to an earth quake.

Maybe we will get a "Future" bastiodon from the new game that's pure steel.
