The ragdolls and achivements make it highly replayable, the gunplay is so much better than anything Rockstar had made to that point.
I wish they brought both of those things to GTA5 intead of ruining them.

Now that's the fundamental problem with mp3: it takes itself too seriously it becomes cringe.
It's incredible how cowardly the writing of MP3 feels, especially in retrospect. It's a game that only dares to be cynical and nothing else, it's irony and cynicism turned up to 11.
Lake's writing is so much more fun, the games don't take themselves seriously but still have this artful flowery language and it works because its not being pretentious with it at all.

no it does not, especially not in the context of the post I was originally responding to. Lake was delivering a serious narrative, if the statement was max payne 2 contains absurdity I would not disagree.

He grew as a writer a ton through the years for sure, I feel like the style was a poor match for Max Payne. I loved his writing in Red Dead 2.

They had done everything they could with the first two, even parts of 2 are a retread of 1. 3 being a deconstruction or the logical end for the kind of person Max would be after going through the events of the last two games (ie a depressed drunken middle aged fool) was fine, as was not setting it yet again in snowy New York.
Quite literally the only problem with the game are the fake loading screens that you're not allowed to skip without a mod.

GTA V came out a year later. Anyway, MP3 is very good but it suffers from the loading screens and cutscenes. With the skip mod you realize how small some of the levels can be. I'd love a sequel or spiritual successor to 3 though, the gunplay and physics were top notch but just buried with bad stuff, most of which is due to their engine and consoles.

I replayed the trilogy this year and I somehow disliked MP3 a lot more than I did during my last 2 playthroughs.
