The Internet's future lies in small communities and websites (alt-chans, IRC, personal sites, etc), everything else can (should) just be considered as real life or serious business and be ignored.

I really don't think this is possible with the pollution of Google search results returning clickbait. The fact is the Internet of today isn't the same as the Internet of back then when there were numerous and endless people paying out of their own pocket to pay for hosting these communities. The important thing was that these communities were centralized - all were welcome, whereas today that same effort is built to fluff one's own importance, namely a stream or YouTube. Every single Discord FRACTURES a community. Don't get me wrong, it happens in real life with real groups when the leaders are more interested in their importance as leaders rather than celebrating the hobby. Leaders need to promote sustainability by welcoming more people but when you see the attrition that results from their negligence of their role as leaders, it goes to shit and we will see this with streamers who will start on this game but then transition to another game, leaving behind only those who love the streamer and leaving those who love the game kinda lost. The community becomes the streamer, not the game.

What has happened in the Western world is that things have gotten rather more difficult for a lot more people. Sure, violence is down across the board, but financial stability is in question. And moreso than the actual problems is the fact people being online are being told that there's a problem so even people who don't have a problem think there's a problem and so they let politics and these issues into their lives.
I am as optimistic as you and act as such. But the energy to do good is being directed wrong and inadvertently or purposely the tech giants are resisting making the Internet better.

If you attend church, try to make the church financially stable and fight off the attrition. If you don't attend church, re-create church in the aggregate in your life - create groups of friends, not just a bunch of people you are friends with. Make your friends friends even if they don't have anything in common - everyone loves to eat, celebrate holidays, go to the beach, whatever. Support each other and create this miniature tribe based on friendship that will be stronger than the tribal allegiances to meaningless bullshit like politics, race, and sexual orientation. If you can get a bricklayer to sit down beside a lawyer beside a wienersucking homosexual and their wives and husband and their kids for a night of beers and beef you've done your part in making America as significantly less shitty place.
