They ruined it.

This ruins Japan's image globally. I remember when Assassins Creed II came out, Game Informer did that whole cover story on the game and it's Renaissance Italy setting and it genuinely got me and probably thousands of other people interested in an place and area of history maybe they didn't know a lot about beforehand. They could have done the same thing with Japan and increasing interest in Japanese history for Gen Alpha or whatever new demographic gets into these sorts of things. Instead, they chose to put this big black guy in there and make it a story about white privilege or whatever the frick, and it's just a big slap in the face to society.

Pencil pushers didn't get their own pages. The concept of a samurai as a landed feudal lord didn't exist at that time. If you took up arms for a lord, you were a samurai. Bushido was formalized during the edo period, not the Sengoku era.

One such example is Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a well-known figure who rose from a peasant background to become a samurai, sengoku daimyo, and kampaku (Imperial Regent).

All retainers who serve samurai in the class system are samurai. After 200 years of peace, an era came when the military power of the samurai was no longer needed. It was not uncommon for poor lower-class samurai to earn a living by making umbrellas, growing morning glories, and raising small birds and selling them. However, as long as they had a master to serve and were aware of being samurai, they were all definitely samurai.

Hideyoshi was the son of an ashigaru and joined the Oda clan as an ashigaru himself, and he became a samurai and vassal to Nobunaga.
I saw a few threads back that (besides the obvious racism) people deny the notion of Yasuke being a samurai because he was a kosho and anons equate japanese feudal power structures with european ones. The fact that you brazenly said "think of them as lords, barons, and knights" while not knowing about Hideyoshi's story just reinforces that.

I don't really see how they could have justified keeping Yasuke as a mere Kosho considering that he was in his mid 20s when the Jesuits brought him to Nobunaga.

Here's the even crazier thing. Nobunaga met Yasuke at the end of his life. The very last year before he was double crossed. That means Yasuke would have to have been trained, saw combat, and made into a samurai in just a year.
It took Hideyoshi 30 years to climb that ladder.

The only combat Yasuke participated in would be the Honno-ji incident where Nobunaga lost his life. Nobunaga(and thus his direct retinue) did not directly participate in any battles in that ~1 year timeframe.

By all accounts he was but a page, Nobunagas "comfort boy" for few years, not a warrior. A Samurai Warrior had to be brought up as such from early on, learn the way of Bushido and train every day for many years. There is no record of him winning any legendary duel with another Samurai or command an army or just a unit in battle or accomplish any noteworthy heroic deed. Nuffin.

              Anonymous

Usually means that it is the most common, but rare exceptions happen. William Adams was a retainer to Tokugawa Ieyasu in his role as Hatamoto.
Another foreigner appointed to samurai, who was also kept as a retainer, was Rinoie Motohiro. He served in the role of translator and later on went to become a buddhist monk.

Japanese sources don't refer to him as a "retainer" but say "には、この黒人・弥助が住処(部屋)と扶持(食べ物)を与えられ、道具持ちをしていたという記述があるという。"
This is the closest thing there is to claiming Yasuke has a rank of any kind.
The source here is explicitly repeating a rumour (postfacing it by "it is said") that there "is a black man who was given food and board and that he carried tools".

Oh that's not the problem, it's just that Ubisoft used to care about historical authenticity.
For example, Da Vinci in real life was an inventor and painter. In the game, he was also an inventor and painter, they just tied him into the story by making him build assassin gadgets and help Ezio.
Yasuke in real life was a retainer and servant to Nobunaga, he wasn't a samurai though. Samurai is a noble title and a separate cast from commoners. Some great leaders of Japan weren't even samurai themselves.
They could have made Yasuke an assassin mentor or something, maybe even a secret ninja after the period were he disappeared from history books.

Also, I'm annoyed by the female kunoochi because they just made her a pop culture TMNT action ninja instead of something more realistic. The classic AC concepts with social stealth would have worked PERFECTLY but they fricked it up.

I'm ok with it, he's cool. Nioh goes full fantasy and just about every character is considerably changed from reality even though they're (loosely) based on real people.
Hell, a Yasuke samurai game where Nobunaga never died at Honnoji and ended up making Yasuke an actual samurai could have been cool.

Alright y'know that's actually fair. I was remembering his heath bar said Obsidian Samurai but it's been a while. I actually sorta' like this take on the character myself.

That actually makes sense, and it would make a good history fiction, especially when Nobunaga didn't care for a status and rewarded those who worked for it,
to a point he made Hideyoshi who started out as a peasant, rank up to a Daimyo over the years (and eventually took Nobunaga's place after he died).

Although I highly doubt Ubislop would actually respect history like that, and even if they did they wouldn't have balls to make Black Samurai invade Korea, as Nobunaga was plotting to invade Korea after taking control of Japan.

Yasuke being a full on samurai in something like Nioh or samurai warriors works for me because Koei usually portrays a very fantasy version of the time they are representing, and they take important characters and turn them into fighters, people like Zhuge Liang or Lady No are playable characters, so having Yasuke be the same doesn't bother me. Honestly I just find it more interesting that so much Yasuke related stuff has been released lately

Interesting? It shouldn't even be considered quaint because of how obvious it is that the reason you see Yosuke so much is because america worship Black folk and the only contact they can connect with japanese culture is only specifically this dude. yes, you'll notice where i said that they didn't do that with the other attempts, i'm talking the french nig from liberation, evie, the chinese b***h in the side scroller, kassandra & fem eivor. i don't recall anything along those lines about syndicate because i didn't really pay attention to it much since i was still butthurt over unity shitting the bed and i bought syndicate on a severely reduced discount before finally giving it a go. the only defense i can give evie is she used a cane/sword and guns so at least that gives her an edge in the fight whereas this ninja girl will only have small blades and shuriken, so it feels like they're actually delivering on it this time.

Seems to be doing the exact opposite. Because of people like OP, you now have a ton of discourse surrounding the differences between Sengoku era Japan and Edo era, the difference in how samurai were perceived in Japanese society, and the contact Japan had with the outside world, specifically the Portugese. Combined with the popularity of that Shogun show, this is probably one of the best periods to get into Japanese history in years.

I'll humor you. Let's say, in the most technical sense of the world, this clusterfrick has, indeed, generated "interest" in Japanese history. The difference between this and AC II would be
            >AC II vibes were unambiguously positive. Got people were interested in Renaissance Italy for it's own sake.
            vs.
            >AC: Shadow vibes are unambiguously negative. People are researching Japanese history to prove "their side" right, or figure out what the hell the truth actually is.
One is an enjoyable experience of learning. The other is a political shitstorm.

No, there was definitely dumb discourse surrounding the Borgias when AC2 came out. And despite this, research is research. The fact that it's being done to win an argument is irrelevant.

That Shogun show is also shit. A white guy, GOT tier political bullshit and fire weapons instead of cool sword samurai fights. It is a well documented historical fact that Japan had very little contact with western culture until the arrival of the black ships. That´s the reason they were still mostly in the feudal age while the western world had already had the industrial revolution and lived in the fricking Victorian era.

I´m sure there probably were episodes of contact before that but, for the most part but it´s pretty ridiculous to cherry pick and hang on to those and disproportionately highlight them and develop them. The truth of the matter is that transportation alone made the world far less diverse back in the 1600. Traveling was dangerous and Japan is a fricking island.

        >INB4 the guy is real

Yeah, he probably stood out quite a lot being the one black guy on the whole island. Choosing him as protagonist is tokenism and it´s not even subtle. Maybe the point was put him on a Tom Cruise like role and embrace the idea of the foreigner in the strange land and justify exposition? In any case an actual japanese looking character would have been better for immersing in the japanese setting. There are some things for which a foreigner is always a foreigner.

That armor looks like shit. I like how the helmet is deliberately designed to not have any sort of face mask so that the trailers and advertisements can show his ugly nose and big lips and loudly communicate that he's black.
Meanwhile, in Nioh, the Obsidian Samurai/Yasuke has a full face mask. To protect his fricking face. Because that's what face masks are supposed to be used for.

    1. Yasuke actually existed.
    2. He was a direct vassal of Oda Nobunaga.
    3. He received a stipend from the Oda family.
    4. Matsudaira Ietada witnessed him serving alongside Nobunaga on an expedition and recorded it in his diary. Ietada's diary is also known for recording the exact date and time of a total lunar eclipse.
    5. If Yasuke is not considered a samurai, then more than 99% of Japanese people who have been classified as samurai in historical studies should not be considered samurai.
    6. Whether he's worthy of being the protagonist of Assassin's Creed is another question.

Nobunaga-sama was accompanied by a black man who was presented to him by the missionaries and to whom he gave a stipend. His body was black like ink and he was 6 shaku 2 fun (182.4 cm or near 6 feet) tall. His name was said to be Yasuke.
11 May 1582. The Ietada Diary

Ietada said "gave a stipend(扶持/Fuchi)" means "That black man, Yasuke, He is samurai". A samurai would never use this expression for someone who is not a samurai. Receiving 扶持 from their lord is proof of being a samurai.

It IS a big slap to the face

Westerners will always seethe at Asian guys they will do every nonsensical underhanded trick and scheme to remove Asian guys from representation

Even having a game set in Japan or Asia these whiteyisraelites will try forcing a white guy or black guy instead

No hear me out ok? this is the same shit that happened with mexican mario, every single white woman was mad about it except the actual mexicans, who thought was pretty cool, this is just the same except that it's now white guys doing it

Of course, shoving a black for its MC in a japanese setting, with the only excuse that nobunaga had a house Black person once, during a time where you see constant race pandering in video games is TOTALLY the same as mario wearing a sombrero because he was visiting mexicoland.

That's not what I'm trying to say, I'm asking why (You) are mad about it, yes (You), it's not your culture being disrespected, it's from a country in the other side of the world, the Japanese don't seem like they're that mad about it considering that it's currently on the top 7 most sold sony products, I would understand if you were in any way connected to that country, but your just fighting and being offended over something that isn't yours, just like the white woman did with Mexican mario

it means that they're a different species since they're the only population which is PC1 shifted (monkey shifted)
they have a ghost population DNA 30-35% which probably had 10-15IQ and produced a pure nog of 45 IQ in west africa

    > In contrast, modern Egyptians are shifted towards sub-Saharan African populations. Model-based clustering using ADMIXTURE37 (Fig. 4b, Supplementary Fig. 4) further supports these results and reveals that the three ancient Egyptian populations differ from modern Egyptians by a relatively larger Near Eastern genetic component, in particular a component found in Neolithic Levantine ancient individuals36 (Fig. 4b). In contrast, a substantially larger sub-Saharan African component, found primarily in West-African Yoruba, is seen in modern Egyptians compared to the ancient samples

Lobbyists only happen if they have the money to pay off those lobbyists.
