I was playing XY at launch. Im sure you were too. Everyone was hyped for the first 3D pokemon game in XY.
If anything these sales charts just show that the DS/3DS wasn't as good for pokemon sales as the switch is.
I think gens 8 and 9 are the worst just from a quality standpoint.
X and Y was why I bounced off the games. I just play gens 1 through 5. I think the transition to 3d was done poorly.

How bad is gen 7?
if Gen 1-6 are games for children: Gen 7 is a game for babies. there’s like a tutorial at the very beginning of the game (trainer school?) that spans several hours. Even when they let you off to explore: most routes are straight lines (not unlike how final fantasy 13 is a hallway simulator) with maybe a very short detour to get a single item. the gameplay loop feels like this: dialogue, more dialogue, tutorial, dialogue, cutscene, dialogue, a short route with 1-2 battles, dialogue, rinse and repeat. It never gets better. And the island trials are a joke. So many people were praising them for finally getting rid of gyms but gyms are strictly better (island trials are baby mini games, a couple of which made you battle some easy wild Pokémon). The game was so boring I wanted to drop it but I couldn’t because of buyer’s remorse.
