They suck at RPG writing. Is it a cultural difference? Compare the quality of writing in something like The Witcher 3 to Persona 5, it's not even close.

Persona series are VNs for morons. There are many better written visual novels than there are JRPGs, S;G, Muv Luv, and more.

RPGs are about choices and Japan is strictly against its people being able to choose.

I can't think of an RPG with good writing from outside of Japan.
Witcher 3 is close, but only if you look at scenes in a vaccuum. The overall connection of scenes and events is a laughable clusterfrick of half-assery.

Can you think of an RPG with good writing from Japan? Didn't think so.

Dragon Quest genuinely has some great writing, but I'm guessing that most of it is lost in troonyslation.

People actually think Witcher 3 has quality writing? Really? No wonder outlets are giving Baldur's Gate 3 best story awards.

And yet 90% of game stories that people talk about are japanese. It really activates your almonds.
Reminder that, Just to mention two titles, 30 years from now people will still talk about FFVII, but no one will even remember BG3.

        he's not wrong thoughever
no one will be talking about baldur's gate 3's story in the future
no one will be talking about bland soulless movie games' stories either, nu-god of war and spider man 2 will have no legacy

Yeah... people really remember FF7 for the "story". Not you know, Fallout, Morrowind, Mass Effect, Planescape, or the god damn Witcher games, who gives a frick about those games, right?

Everyone just endlessly talks about how amazing Final Fantasy stories are and when you say "classic RPG narratives", surely, Xenoblade is the go to one, right?

I used to be a weeb, so I have some sympathy for this logic, but for frick sake, this is beyond delusional.

Well yeah. There's a reason some of our most hated RPGs in recency are JRPGs.
