Because they could finally articulate how much they do not care for Pokemon past 151. They add nothing practical and are objectively made with merchandising in mind, unlike the original 151 who were made with being actual game monsters in mind because GameFreak was not banking on Pokemon becoming a smash hit multimedia franchise success when they were first developing Red and Green.

Nope, it's the sole reason your journey even starts in Gen 1. You only HAPPENED to tackle the Pokemon League because npcs kept nudging you in that direction, and then once they stopped doing that you had to do so anyway to keep progressing through Kanto due to HMs, same with how you just so happen to tackle Team Rocket and dismantle them, because they're in the way of your journey to fill out the Pokedex.
