The IP always belonged to the current guys who funded it, but they did not make the game, just bankrolled it.

The current owners of the game aren't the original developers. They performed a hostile takeover of Lab Zero by ousting the previous figureheads years ago. The people who actually made Skullgirls are long gone.
Skullgirls was the dream game of some guy and his gay bf. They got funding for it, hired some bald dude and a chick to do the art, then made it with the gay bf handling most of the balancing and such and the other guy the world and such.
Gay bf was 'hard to work with', got fired and sued them. Other guy is currently suing them for similar treatment.
The IP always belonged to the current guys who funded it, but they did not make the game, just bankrolled it.

I don't care about Skullgirls but the dev deserves to go under for this. They can do whatever they want to the game, it's not a question of "right" or "wrong". It's more like it's a massive dick move that shows no respect for their fans. No Japanese dev would ever act like this for example.
