This is like one of my biggest issues with the series and well some other games too. On the first try you are pretty much pretending that you have to kill every enemy. But once you've done that you will just skip through all of them and run to the next bonfire or boss because yea you can do that.
What if you could do this in DMC? Or Bayonetta? Or new Dooms? I always hear people b***hing about locking player to arenas but really if you don't do that then the combat encounters become optional and that's fricking shit for a game where fighting is core gameplay mechanic. If the focus was on somewhere else like say platforming then it's fine to not to fight enemies to progress.
I find combat with normal enemies far harder than the bosses in any souls game besides Elden Ring.

You're right, but it's not a new thing: you can tell they fell for "le hard game" meme from the Dark Souls DLC. Just look at the difference between the base game bosses and the DLC bosses.
The base game was very exploration focused, and required you to make good use of your surroundings, use different weapons (i.e., Divine weapons in the catacombs, cursed weapons in New Londo, Occult weapons in Anor Londo or even Black Knight weapons against demons) depending on the situation, strategies or even rings depending on the terrain (swamp, lava). It was a game with no "one-size fits all solution", which you could play a million times in a million different ways.
Then they release the DLC, which is basically a boss rush in a couple of re-used maps where the only viable strategy is roll-roll-roll-R1. Dark Souls 2 and 3 cemented this status, and I didn't even bother trying Elden Ring but from what I saw it's the same shit with a jump button and horses.
Combat has never been the reason why Demon's Souls and Dark Souls (which was a 10/10 in my book until Anor Londo) were great games.

Sekiro was at least something different even if it still has a lot of the Souls foundation. Elden Ring tried to recapture that magic but was still saddled with the combat to dilute each other.

Both BB and DaS3 have great level design on par and even better than some DeS levels. Only DaS2 and ER misses the mark.
I think ER managed to capture some of that magic, with the Siofra river, Nokron, Farum Azula, it had it's moment but they will never be DeS/DS1 again.
At least we got some AC kino right after so I don't mind them rebooting up old shit

In that sense you're right, meaning that if you wanted you could go through the entire game with a single weapon, but still you would be making things harder on yourself in some instances. Katanas are good, but some places really benefit from using weapons with a large reach that allow you to hit multiple enemies at once. What I'm saying is that the game encourages you to experiment with different weapons and enemy weaknesses, while you're still free to do as you want and succeed. You will surely agree that this is very different from "learn to roll around the attacks of this boss" x 1000
The game doesn't encourage you to do shit, you're vastly overstating how important these elemental weaknesses are. Not to mention these gimmicks exist in later titles too.
The fact that the game was completely overanalyzed and consequently trivialized by the community does not change what the developers tried to do, which was definitely not "let's make le hard action game". Unfortunately, it's what they started to do from the Dark Souls 1 DLC onwards, losing any semblance of originality and novelty. Bloodborne, Sekiro, ER are minor tweaks to the formula. These games have been a dime a dozen in the past decade, while I cannot think of a single King's Field spiritual successor after DeS and DS1 outside of the indie scene.
Because the game lets you do whatever you want and use different approaches, not forcing you to use a hard counter, not forcing you on a single path - and thats why its so great and replayable - ie you are supposed to use divine weapon to kill respawning skeletons and that would be easier, but you can just find nekromancers and kill them instead.
Souls games are great because of the world and atmosphere, not because of the meme difficulty - they are only hard when you are new and dont know where you are even going (and thats part of the charm too, no handholding like in all the AAAslop).
Derping about combat difficulty is totally missing the point and not understanding why Souls are so great and impactful.

Elden Ring was super hard for me, I had to give up after barely defeating Margit.
This whole genre is played out. You can only wander through linear corridors, or in Elden Rings case empty open worlds, killing trash mobs with no story and no other form of gameplay for so long before it gets stale. At least Sekiro had some cool traversal stuff with the grappling hook and changed up the stale dodge roll combat.

The performance of this game is trash, I don't know how this doesn't cause a wave of widespread dissatisfaction.
On the same PC where I can run Doom Eternal at a stable 144fps, and even at 60fps with fricking ray tracing, Elden Ring runs like garbage. Even when I choose "low" settings, and remove ray tracing, the game continues to drop to 40fps periodically. Frame pacing is all fricked up too, sometimes even at 60fps, the visual sensation looks like 30fps because the frames are out of sync. How can the Japanese programmers be so inept?
