This and CD are the only good Sonics and CD is only good because of the soundtracks. I will die on this hill.

Didn't mention because not retro, but it's alright. Music's great but it feels kinda long.

the art direction is too incoherent for me to enjoy. unblended dithering patterns next to real transparencies? Frick off!

Best ones yes, though I wouldn't call them the only good ones. You might like Sonic 1 GG/SMS, it's similar to the Genesis game but with more precision platforming challenges. As always, if you enjoy Sonic CD, I highly recommend checking out more SEGA CD games. It's a great and underrated platform, and definitely has more going for it than Saturn imo

Why do y'all have to be contrarian? S2 and 3K are amazing games.
    Sonic Adventure is dogshit though

Master System sonic is better than both of them.
Far better controls and level design, and just straight platforming with very few of those horrible gimmick levels (like fishing/casinos/pinball etc) that are so prevalent in sonic games.

      >with very few of those horrible gimmick levels (like fishing/casinos/pinball etc)
We only really had fishing in Sonic Adventure... and how are the casino/pinball levels horrible? Often they're some of the levels that make the best use of Sonic's physics engine and all of its momentum. I really like SMS/SGG Sonic 1 too... but with the way you're describing it's like you want Sonic to be just another safe and regular platformer, and I don't see the point in it, anon.

    Sonic 1
    Sonic 1 (8-Bit)
    Sonic 2
    Sonic 2 (8-Bit)
    Sonic CD
    Sonic & Tails 1
    Sonic 3 & Knuckles
    Sonic & Tails 2
    Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island
    Sonic Pocket Adventure

I'd say Sonic has plenty of excellent titles in the 8-Bit and 16-Bit eras alone, and I'm not even counting the GBA and DS series' which were also excellent, with Advance and Rush still holding up quite well today. Sonic's a classic series with great titles.

Explain why you don't like 2 or 3&K please.

Not OP but I'll bite. Special Stages are annoying, game starts out great but starts to drag on immediately after Casino Night Zone, or even after Chemical Plant if you have a short attention span. The final boss is also a pain in the behind. Soundtrack is obviously inferior but that only happened because they were too intimidated to put it on SEGA CD like originally planned.

The most common complaint I've heard for Sonic 3&K is that the levels are too long, in regards to 3 I think they're fine but I do remember Sandopolis and Lava Reef being abnormally long the last time I played, though it's been a while.

I like all of the Genesis games, but they all have their weird little quirks (in the case of CD it's primarily Wacky Workbench and the Time Travel system, in Sonic 1's case it's Marble and Labyrinth Zone, etc). Usually it's just a matter of preference, though in my case I also prefer the actual SEGA CD hardware over standard Genesis, would have been great if it got another Sonic game.

Both 1 and 2 start to suck later on but 2 lasts longer before the suckage begins

Sonic CD is still my favorite Sonic game in the series overall. Sonic CD really does feel more like a real sequel to Sonic 1 in the way the game was made. Sonic 2, in many respects, speeds up the gameplay quite considerably. There are a lot less 'stop and go' moments, and a lot more roller coaster like elements. Also, the Spindash changes the gameplay quite a bit. Sonic CD added the super peel out mechanic, the spindash feels like it was hacked in last moment. But retains a lot of the 'stop and go' style play mechanics from Sonic 1, as well as the three stage structure. Sonic CD also uses the stage vertically a lot, with maps like Wacky Workbench. The interesting thing about Sonic CD are the different map variations for different time zones. Also, the optional objectives of finding those power generators and Metal Sonic projectors, to obtain the 'good future' endings, it will also change the bad future stage into a good future stage. weirdly needless mechanic. But neat. But completing all of the bonus stages does the same thing. Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles feel more like actual sequels to Sonic 2. I had Sonic CD for the Sega CD. Played it more than any of the other Sonic games.
