The issue was that the game never had anything about item inspection in the tutorial, it's a weird misc feature that only mattered for the dragon claws. It's "look on the back of the box" tier puzzlemaking. It wouldn't have been a meme if there was a single moment in the helgen escape where you have to look at an item up close.

        Anonymous

        >it's a weird misc feature that only mattered for the dragon claws
it's not even that. the game tells you the answer; homies got filtered by the illusion of a puzzle.

        [...]
        [...]
you don't have to rotate the item in your inventory because the combination is fully visible in the default camera angle. keep in mind that you have to loot the claw from the guy's corpse in the first place, so this actually forces the player to look at the combination.

their old game redguard used the same mechanic except it would be pieces of a treasure map hidden on the back of some items you rotate in your inventory, and then you'd have to find a location on the island that matched, orient yourself with a compass, and count your steps as you move in precise directions to dig up a tool you needed to fight some magic slug necromancer homosexual

some things skyrim did good by simplifying

  20. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

To be fair, a mechanic like this feels extremely out of place compared to the whole rest of the game. I honestly don't even know how something like this made it in but nothing else even remotely like it.

I actually don't fricking remember what I did the first time I got to this part of the game. I think I remember inspecting the dragon claw on a wim and noticing the symbols on the claw itself was the code to the door.

I didn't KNOW how to do that. I just used context clues. I knew you needed a key, and the keyhole has a symbol of a dragon claw on it, so I just assumed the key was the claw, but I wasn't sure where to get the code. I first thought it was on the walls, so I was looking at them. I will admit I think it took me a solid ten minutes to finally open the door the first time the game came out, and I played it.
