I played Genshin up until the start of Fontaine and the story and characters are so lackluster, if Sony games are Movie games, then Genshin is a Telenovela game, characters don't develop in any major way, the game is split up in these episodic quests that then last an hour (Most of that hour taken up by dialogue and/or pointless banter); the gameplay is just combo-ing skills one into another, yes there is the strategic factor of element reactions but I got Tighnari in my first 100 rolls and he carried me for most of the game, it isn't until Inazuma that you find some more interesting enemies and environments that actually force you into playing a bit more smart, oh yeah and there's also the fact limited-times events, "play it now or play it never" typical car-salesman tactics, the gacha system is worse than other gachas I've played (Blue Archive, GFL, FGO; I have over a dozen 3*-equivalents in each one of those games after having played them for less than a year, after a year of playing Genshin I only had 5), I somehow reached up to Adventure Rank 54 before calling it quits, I don't wanna touch it again until they make grinding or the gacha less harsh, the music and character designs are marvelous, don't get me wrong, but I can enjoy those without playing the game.
At least Counter-Strike doesn't hide weapons behind microtransactions, you can play all Heroes in DotA after 25 matches or doing a console command, as for TF2 I can slightly get your point, but weapons are so easy to obtain even as a pure-F2P you still have the (abandoned) crafting system to dump your duplicates.

My main complaint is building characters, its actually quicker to get them from 1-80 than Genshin 1-80/90, but relics are a pain in the ass, genuinely, and you can't be careless about it like in genshin, because of HSR "gameplay", also abyss is shit, just like genshin.

For dots you need effect hit rate everything else doesn't matter much, but you'll get maybe 1 upgrade, then you have other stuff like speed and effect resistance. My black swan is like 60 hit rate, I don't even bother with relics because I need to level other characters.

Because they invested a shitton of money in production quality. It was very expensive from the start. The shader pipeline they use to make this 2D-like anime style is a fricking masterpiece. Also the animation quality and smoothness, the super expensive OST. And they also kept investing back into it all the time, because new regions and character deaigns are clearly much higher quality. Given all that you cannot just make a generic clone that looks and feels generic due to standard rendering pipeline and hope it will somehow do better. You need to overinvest them and make sure the money actually went into development. Project Mugen, for example, looks exactly like that, something even more expensive to make. Unless the trailers are all bullshit it can actually rival hoyo.

I mean it seems like they did, but not really, lots of mobile games have revenues in billions or at lest hundreds of millions.
Mobile games are expensive to make mostly due to number of employees those companies have, often in thousands.
The difference is that Genshin had a bigger upfront budget where the idea in mobile dev is to turn out titles in few months to a stage they can be dropped on a store and go from there.

Though the art team at hoyo is really good, same for the lore guys, shame the main story writers just cant decide on a tone or direction, tech wise they keep doing tiny improvements here and there but it ads up, the new regions look amazing

When it comes to really next gen stuff i would say it already did, Immortals of Aveum, while a meh game, it uses all new tech, from unreal only stuff like nanite and new shader workflow, to stuff like ray traced GI and really fancy blend shape based facial animation
Art style of that game is questionable, but tech wise its truly next gen, completely ahead of what anybody else did

Ray tracing will make stuff look better, people really underestimate how good proper GI makes stuff look, they are used to lazy meme ray tracing with traced shadows and reflection, both usless, only real point to use it is to do GI
Personally im a character artsist, and i dont see anybody doing anything truly new, and i fallow industry solutions, though polycounts will fricking skyrocket, and without the ps4 dragging everything down to shared memory limits resolutins on textures will get some big you wont see any blurriness

moron talk, been talking a bit with previous naughty dog tech director on AI solutions, seen him do stuff on modeling and level design, hes not impressed despite his plans to start up his own AI software, says it will take many years yet and he plans it as a really long term investment
But you will see AI make animation, voice acting, simple models and stuff, but not entire games, even a army of coders who know every line by memory cant optimize well with compilers that make 0 mistakes, meanwhile AI that imagines half the code would make shit that runs at silky smooth -2 fps, bluescreen your pc and then brick your hard drive
Gachadevs probably thought Genshin wouldn't survive amongst 2D lewd gachas, but I'd say during Inazuma they started scratching their heads and soon we gonna have a bunch of gachas like genshin, I just hope that they support proper co-op and look good and play nice.
