This game became popular only because The Lord of the Rings trilogy came out just before it’s release, everyone was into fantasy and WoW delivered just that.

Makes sense. Alliance (being full of typical fantasy races) was certainly more popular among normalgays.
I played it because I was already a fan of Warcraft and Blizzard at the time could do no wrong.

No everyone already loved or had heard about Warcraft 3, StarCraft, and Diablo and formerly known as Blizzard released a user friendly mmo with a good setting that was a quasi social way to spend hundreds of hours playing a game

No, Warcraft 3 made it popular. One of the most pirated games back in early 2000s.

I honestly think one of the smartest move made by blizzard was making D2 and wc3 so fricking cheap, I remember you could buy D2 with some fricking magazine and literally everyone at my school bought it
Shit like that built an army of fanboys

          Anonymous

Yeah the reason Blizzard was so popular was because the games were cheap and you could run their games on potato PC's. So basically everyone could play them.
And WC3 got insanely popular because of the custom games, most people didn't care about or even played the campaign and regular game.

you know there is was lotr mmo that released only a few years after wow? if that was the case, then wow wouldn't have gone on to remain so popular past lotr inspired vanilla. Wow peaked like 4 or 5 years after it's release, btw.

His point is WoW capitalized on both the fantasy craze at the time and by streamlining the MMO experience. They were the first, so of course they outlasted all competition. Most MMOs that have released and failed since have been diet copies.

WoW was just big, back then the selling point was it was big, it was a tech demo

Personally growing up early 2000s I always saw it as LOTR and Star Wars movie lovers as casuals, while WoW, Final Fantasy and FPS players as actual hardcores

  6. 7 months ago

    No.

It became popular because even the shittiest computer could run it, it had cartoony and childish graphics and the game was casualized to the extreme and pandered to kids.

It was the equivalent of Fortnite back in the days.

most people playing wow were not kids back in the day. fortnite is essentially free, wow still has a sub requirement. there were a lot of kids that played, but majority of the populace was early to mid 20s.

        >most people playing wow were not kids back in the day
You are right, it was not most. It was nearly everyone.
Don't trust me? Just look at Ganker now and all the nostalgia WoW threads they have, nearly everyone there played this game as a kid.

          >majority of the populace was early to mid 20s

people who actually have nostalgia for vanilla wow are in their mid 30s. I know because i play Wow classic and that's what the player base is. Classic was released 15 year after the original. 35 -15 = 20. Nice try champ. Not to mention, people have nostalgia for various different expansions of the game. So saying every wow thread on Ganker is about vanilla is just wrong and moronic.

Define kid I think when vanilla thru worlk were at their height most people playing were probably 10-20 years old. I know there were many older people playing but I also remember many people having to quit for school or work

there were very few 10 year olds playing vanilla and wrath was released 4 years after the initial game. kids started playing once the game was hyped the frick up. as they do.

I remember for a while I had a pc that could run starcraft and frozen throne but when I got a WoW trial disk and dawn of war I could never get them to run and only got to play at other people houses

Parents wouldn't pay for a subscription game for a child in the early 2000s.
Internet also wasn't so spread out and there was limited bandwith.
Comparing it to f2p Fortnite for children is pretty moronic.

No it was popular because warcraft 3 was amazing

  11. 7 months ago
    Anonymous

Bullshit. It got popular because it was Warcraft, which was very popular back then (with Blizzard still having very good reputation) but mostly because they designed it as "casual" MMO - one that could be played and enjoyed in small, friendly guilds or solo instead of "200% srs bussines" like Everquest. It was easy to get into and set in popular franchise. That's fricking all it needed.

WoW blew up because its popular competitors were mostly MMOs developed by the third world intended for people which the developers didn't respect. Customer's time in wasn't important or valued in SEA so things like Lineage needed to draw things out just for the sake of making people pay more money every month.
Also they weren't as competent or innovative, it was mostly point and click high risk time sinks.

        Huh wrong?
After the Well Exploded, the Night Elf leadership banned the use of the Arcane magic.
Those who disagreed traveled across the great sea to Eastern Kingdoms and founded the Sunwell, and magical source of Arcane Energy. The power of the Sunwell transformed the Night Elves who lived near it into the Human-looking High Elves.
Like I think azshara was literally a mage

Yes, that's what I said - NE couldn't be a mage because arcane magic was banned after Azshara frickery. So modern NE being allowed to practise it is big frick you to the lore. Just like allowing Taurens to become paladins (lol holy cow).
