Because despite popular belief, games were in a really fricking horrible shit spot in 2009. The only 3d combat rpgs that were worth their salt were the monster hunter games. Everything else was west slop or story focused. Demon souls and subsequently dark souls reinvigorated the genre and also the idea that games don't have to hold your hand to sell well.
It's special now too, it stands out in the sea of modern soulslikes with how simple and almost minimalistic it is while still maintaining that signature lonely feel that nobody can replicate.
>great death mechanics that were beyond the standard slop of "reload from last checkpoint" or "reload from last save" >first game to let you summon, invade, play as the boss with a reward system for doing so (they also tie into world tendency and body form mechanics) >equipping whatever you want in your right and left hand, each weapon type having a unique moveset and being able to two hand anything. This made it have some of the best combat at the time >unique atmosphere somewhat reminiscent of ICO, very ominous and ghostly. You peer off into the vistas and just feel like you're in a medieval post-apocalypse. Enhanced by the great NPCs. Nothing like it before or after
It managed to hit the right notes at the right time. We had Ninja Gaiden, DMC4 and Bayo right on or around 2009 so its not just the action and difficulty aspect. Its likely the atmosphere, tone and feel all being cohesive. The gameplay and design all synced with the overall story.
There wasn't anything else like it at the time. Dark Souls was the cultural catalyst, but it owes everything to Demon's Souls. It was a game that had very little handholding and coddling during a time when "cinematic experiences" were getting popular and the other major releases were nothing but excuses to get to the next big cutscene or setpiece battle. It had simple mechanics that offered a lot of depth in a time where other titles were either stripping down gameplay or inflating content (Batman Arkham Asylum is a perfect example of both, though it was pretty groundbreaking for its own reasons too).
Demon's Souls dragged people back to the Mega Man "look before you leap" style of game that had largely fallen out of favor and reminded players that games could be hard, punishing, and frustrating, but ohhhhh so rewarding when you finally triumphed. Also, Demon's Souls threads on Ganker were some of the best threads Ganker has ever seen. Legit grassroots support systems were built from those threads and it was fricking magical to be a part of.
Because DeS is Miyazaki and the team at their creative peak. They basically had free reign to do what they wanted because the higher ups wrote the project off.
Cheesing bosses and breaking the game with OP shit is expected experience for RPGs. We just lost that to the esport tryhards with time, the same people who now cry for nerfs in PVE because some guide says one thing is more convenient than other things.
Amazing graphics, worse artistic direction in every possible way.
Adjusted some things to make the game easier/less tedious like removal of the item burden system and adding a shortcut in the final stage.
Also added some new armor (two sets are pre-order exclusive) and some worthless new weapons (also pre-order exclusive).
Quite literally feels like a western version of the original.
very
last time I did it was like 3 years ago or so, and the only place that was running poorly was the not-blighttown area
I'm sure the emulators are better now, but the hardware I used was a 9700k + 1080ti

i love demon's souls, but it has a lot of problems that future souls iterations have fixed. the world tendency system is frankly moronic and poorly executed, the poise system is moronic and doesnt work, equipment burden is moronic and wastes your time pointlessly, the animations are janky as hell, the weapons are ridiculously unbalanced (meat cleaver lmao). i would love a demon's souls 2 with world tendency returning as a concept but executed in a way better way allowing for more natural and organic fluctuations and shit. i really love the atmosphere, aesthetic, level progression structure and story of demon's souls and would love to see another one someday.
its a central mechanic of the game that is convoluted and confusing as hell and is still to this day poorly understood by the community. certain actions can affect the world and your character by some of the things you do and whether you survive certain interactions or if you die. it can drift between white and black tendencies. please read here and try to discern this idiotic monstrosity https://demonssouls.wiki.fextralife.com/World+Tendency >inb4 low iq homosexual zoomer cant into teh hardcore mechanicz of d00m
i played the game back in 2011 and replayed it in like 2014 and then again earlier this year in emulated form. i am very familiar with this game and the world tendency system is a really cool concept on paper but its insanely badly executed in practicality
The only problem with world tendency was when it synced to a server average making it a pain to clear pure white events since it could shift back down and also had the negative effect in its later years to start every character near pure white which made the game easier than it should have been, the concept is very simple and hardly groundbreaking if you do well you get rewarded with rare items the only unique aspect is that if you do bad and keep dying as a human the game will keep kicking you down and make it harder and even then you eventually want to go down for upgrade materials.
Why did Demon's Sovls have so much better item and people names than the successors?
DeSu >The Old Hero >Old spice >Royal lotus >Boletaria
Sequels: >forgotten sinful knight of niggurah >dried crusty rotten finger
Because DeS is Miyazaki and the team at their creative peak. They basically had free reign to do what they wanted because the higher ups wrote the project off.
In 2009 they had way more creative freedom. Sony was putting out weird, quirky shit at the time and kinda let devs experiment with games. Think about Journey, Flower, Last Guardian, Noby Noby Boy, etc. At the time, FromSoft was a pretty hard B-team developer so I don't think much was expected from them. After Demon's success and the switch to multi-plat it's pretty clear there was direction from Bamco on the marketability front.
I meant that DeS allowed them to do so much and every game after feels more derivative of what they started with. DS3 especially felt like going through the motions.
>Ostrava
Is that the guy who walks down the same road every time you sleep at a bonfire?
>Ostrava should be the protagonist
Not really. That would mean no character customization.
Personally i wish if soul games did have an story
Why was DeS so special in 2009?
No other game at the time would have a dragon swoop down and burn you to death with no warning
Or have one of the boss fights be another online player.

Back when people thought it was cool to summon and cheese bosses
DeS mods are kino
https://www.youtube.com/@Thens_DeS/videos
This dude loves trannies and made a mod that changes the genders to body types

>I wish we got a Kingsfield 5 instead
You did
this. except it was King's Field V that turned out to be shit
dark souls 2's graphics really are so shit it could genuinely pass for a king's field game from 2003.
#notmykingsfield
does barry not realize his "le DS2 was KF5" cope macro is something only he posts?

why? he is basically the same archetype as solaire

QRD?
If you made a mistake you get punished for the whole of the game
Game being punishing is a bad thing? No wonder people like DaS where barely anything you do has actual consequences.
It wasn't even permanent since it was designed for you to use multiplayer to change tendency

Even by dark souls you had namco influencing development and forcing it out the door early.
