played it because I'm a big classic RE fan but it sucked ass
i tried to beat Nightmare in that courtyard on hard for 3 months and gave up
still my favorite DMC game though, there's just something special about it I can't quite put into words
It has great atmosphere and a lotta soul, it also has a great so-bad-it's-good cringekino story (as opposed to the genuinely good but still cringekino story from 3 and 5). Something about it is very sincere

Compared to the faster and more varied combos of the sequels, DMC1 offers a more...minimalist approach to the battle system with no active weapon switching or systems like the style system...and yet it is undoubtedly compact, refined and most of all, difficult and challenging. It is therefore more satisfying in a narrower way. It definitely holds its ground as a standalone action game. and I stress the word STANDALONE.

true. it's a shame the focus has shifted from aesthetics and atmosphere to crazy combos and whatnot. at least 4 has a cool atmosphere idk if it qualifies as gothic but pretty good

Great game. I haven't played it since 2002 though. I tried getting into DMC3 and DMC4 but couldn't, for me DMC was as much the atmosphere as it was the gameplay and I just do not like the urban shit that they added later in the series.
Worst camera in the series, really fricks you over some times. That last nightmare fight is hell, you literally cannot see Dante half the time.
The urban shit the series started with immediately after DMC1 is so fricking gay and they just refuse to drop it, fricking why.. just stop, it's not a good or cool setting in the slightest.
I'm no expert but they're probably trying to distance themselves from Resident Evil

It still blows my mind that 2 is such fricking boring slop when on paper it seems like it would be almost as good as the first game or even better. You really have to play that game to truly understand how shit it is.
That being said, is it worth it to bother finishing 2? I never did for obvious reasons.
You finish 2 to get the same scars as every else. In a fricked up way, it’s a right of passage. Helps its not too long and it truly does make you appreciate how Fantastic 3 is
