More people are actually playing it and realising it's a pretty good game for what it is.
The same is happening to a lot of what AVGN played, to be honest. He actually really fricked up a lot of retro game discourse for a while.

      Anonymous

I disagree, the camera in CV64 is indeed fricked and I myself couldn't figure out the mandragora/nitro part without googling it, granted that is like the only time the key item system fails you the whole game. It's not a horrible game, but I wouldn't recommend it over other games.
Plus, Legacy of Darkness kicks its fricking ass and basically replaced CV64 entirely. The only reason to play CV64 instead is if you really want to play CV64 over LoD.

          Anonymous

So basically what you're saying is that you think the camera is adequate because you haven't played enough games due to being poor?

            Anonymous

I mean, I think it's adequate because I grew up in the 90's, and these were things you just kind of dealt with.
You can have a fun game with kind of a shit camera. You just learn to deal with it.
I don't even think the camera is that bad. It's a forced complaint.

I've only heard great things about the game I thought it was universally liked until avgn dumped on it. He's shat on a few good games

James is kinda biased against the 5th gen and early 3d, he's just more of a 2D guy as someone who grew up with the NES and SNES. Like most 2d gays on this board he sees it as the uncanny valley between the latter 2d games in the 4th gen and the 6th gen which was modern when he started making AVGN episodes. Even in his non-avgn vids you can tell he has a lot more fun talking about the PS2, Gamecube and Dreamcast.

Anyway, Castlevania 64 was a decent game, specially for it's time. You just have to remember how recent and unpolished third person action games like these were before the sixth gen to truly realize what people saw in it back in the day.

        >James
James hasn't been writing anything for AVGN in a very long time. Even at the beginning the episodes were mostly written by Mike. The Majora's Mask episode was clearly written by someone at Screenwave who has a massive hateboner for it. Even if you don't personally like it, it's nowhere close to being a bad game in the leagues of Superman 64 or something like that.

      Anonymous

Honestly I could write a fricking essay on this but I'll try to keep it not insanely tl;dr. I think the entire culture behind gaming discourse has changed a lot, the "angry reviewer" shtick was basically every single game reviewer for years which was indirectly due to James. The only difference is James was playing a character and a lot of these old Youtube fricks like Yahtzee and Angry Joe and Nostalgia Critic were not and actually were just that angry.

But nowadays that type of shtick is generally considered insufferable and nearly all of the old figures have comparable detractor bases to fanbases because of it.
But I also think theres a new type of insufferable content where some guy with a horrible speaking voice will talk for 2 hours straight about a game presenting his snarky contrarian opinion, and that often involves taking a lot of these old punching bag games and saying they were actually good.
My point here is none of this has anything to do with public opinion when the game actually came out. Castlevania 64 got very average reviews and reception when the series before that game did a lot better than that, so yeah it makes sense some people enjoy it while other people hated it. Its not objectively bad just flawed.

Same. I loved so many games back in the day that I later found out were "traaaaash" by sweaty neckbeards. The merchant was a super memorable character from me, and I loved the fact that the more you spent with him raised the chances of him fighting you later. Made me feel so dirty and betrayed as a kid, haha. Once you get to the mansion, this game becomes pure kino.

He shit on the Sega CD as well. While there is a lot of FMV trash on there, there are some really nice from the ground up developed games that showed off what the system could do. Much more than the other bottom tier systems it usually gets lumped in with (looking at you Jag and CDI).

It has Final Fight with washed out graphics and that's it. Every "enhanced" version of an IP it had was crap because nobody wanted to make much more content than a typical cartridge game had. It wouldn't make sense financially.

I watched some gameplay footage of it, it looks kind of cute to me. It doesn't really feel like Castlevania, but it looks like a good game. The money in the coffins kind of made me giggle

Many of them are basically like enhanced cartridge games, but that's sort of what makes it cool. It's like Genesis on steroids or something. They could've easily put some of the games on regular carts, but then you'd be missing the high quality CD audio, animated cutscenes, voice acting, and cool stuff like Sonic CD's 3D special stages. The first games on it I played aside from Sonic CD were the shmups, but there's a lot of good games on there, even if some of them are just enhanced ports.

It wouldn't have gotten a sequel on the N64 if it wasn't good. On that note, I wonder if Chameleon Twist is good since the sequel is good.

It's about high time the N64 got its redemption arc.

No it’s not, the reason the games are getting revisionist histories is because the console has a meager library compared to the elephant in the room that slapped its shit, so mentally ill fans are having to
try and change the narrative around the handful of games that did exist

      Anonymous

      >It wouldn't have gotten a sequel on the N64 if it wasn't good
It wasn't a sequel it was an expanded version of what was largely the same game, and from my perspective it existed as an attempt to fix how bad the original is.
Has nothing to do with Castlevania on the N64 being good because I assure you it's mediocre at best.

        Anonymous

It's not really a fix but more like an attempt to fulfill the complete game. Originally "Castlevania 64" was supposed to have four characters. Schneider Belmont, Cornell Reinhardt, Carrie, and some other guy I forget the name of. They ended up dropping Cornell, made his last name Schneider's first name for some reason, and the fourth character was repurposed into the Frankenstein gardener that chases you in the villa. For LOD they brought Cornell back and made Henry into the new fourth character. But it ended up coming off weird since the game forces you to play as them before you can use Reinhardt and Carrie.

      >It wouldn't have gotten a sequel on the N64 if it wasn't good.
It wasn't a sequel. It was a rerelease with some extra content that attempted to fix the flaws of the original.

If you weren't a moron you would know that back in the 90s this game was recieved decently but with the rise of youtube and the likes of the AVGN with his poorly made video about the game, the collective thinking changed to one much more negative, now it seems things are being balanced once again.

Received fine by critics but everyone I know who had tried it back then expressed disappointment. I was disappointed in it too. I've warmed up on it since then but it still isn't half as good as most people are pretending it is. Also from my perspective it had a bad reputation long before he decided to control everyone's minds with his video about it or whatever it is you're claiming the big bad AVGN did. I swear this is just as bad as Game Grumps Sonic tism.

A lot of that is too high expectations though. It's not as good as any of the 2D Castlevanias, really, but as a 3D action game from that era, it's fine. It's got some interesting ideas. It's not some dismally awful piece of shit

      >in the 90s this game was received decently
Does this mean anything? Any game now has been "received decently", mostly due to low-expectations making anything fly (and thus who had expectations and didn't like it don't count!).
If every game was well-received, none is.

It's funny because the game doesn't get better after the sewer either, at least not immediately. The Mandragora puzzle in the castle center is infamous but not terribly difficult to figure out, it's the backtracky nature of the castle center that can bring things to a halt before the game picks up steam again with more combat and platforming challenges.

Looking back at the EGM reviews they are higher than I remember. I think 9.0 is a little high, 7-8 would be a more reasonable score. If the beginning of the game was better than it would be more of a classic but there are weak sections of the game that makes it just a good game with good atmosphere.

It sold 2.16 million copies - less than even Croc.

        Anonymous

DMC had 2 sequels within the next 4 years though. It was a legitimate emerging franchise and it shared market space with the Capcom survival horror fandom. It had good sales numbers for an M rated game that parents don't buy for kids and of course, DMC ended up with a much bigger merch sales footprint than Croc or Banjo ever did.

          Anonymous

And DMC lost all momentum with it's sequel, it's not till 3 that it get good will back but it came out the same year the 360 did, then 4 came out, then shit the bed with the western title that actively mocked fans of the series.

You can say it's more important than it's given credit for but if the content is not there, that simply speaks for a lack of interest.
No one is stopping any person that wants to make content for it in any way. Make some yourself if you think there is an untapped market for it and benefit from it.

How the frick do you expect a M rated game to sell as many copies as Nintoddler shovelware on a child's toy that every baby boomer parent bought for their kids? Whatever short lasting gimmick it has does not make it a powerhouse property. Hollywood investors wanted a Resident Evil movie before anyone over 25 knew what Resident Evil was.

Nintendo Youtubers really do live in a developmentally stunted bubble like adult fans of Mickey Mouse do.

All three DMCs put together had less sales than the two Banjo games.

            Anonymous

GTA was a modern cultural phenomenon, same with CoD. Non-gamers bought consoles just to play those games. Most M rated games don't sell to parents buying gifts for kids.
