your loadout is bad. you can spend hours just going through customization. that's why game is very comfy... nice shop music, nice set up music, and nice ambient thinking music in the hub..
each time i go back it manages to give me nostalgia vibes even if i never played the game. must be that 80s vaporwave aesthetic that game clearly has in retrospect

        >your loadout is bad
Is it a trial and error situation? I generally suck at tactical type games but I love cool robots lol.

No, it's a "I don't have enough missile platforms" situation.

If there are 'good' and 'bad' loadouts then the game isn't very good then.

Loadouts are a huge part of the game.

you not only CAN spend hours going through customization, you WILL spend hours going through customization. but not in the nice way you're saying. customization in front mission is the epitome of early rpg linear progression. beat a level, buy more expensive gear, beat a level, buy more expensive gear. get parts that increase your wanzer power so you can equip better weapons. buy the weapons that net the most experience and do the most damage. rinse and repeat. over. and over. and over. and over.

front mission is okay. the story is pretty non-existent. the dialog is cheesy. the gameplay cycle is excessively repetitive, and that's not even considering cheesing it by grinding in the arena.

even if you spend time experimenting with wanzer builds early in the game, unless you're an 80iq moron you will ultimately end up spending 10-20 minutes between each fight upgrading your wanzers to the same equipment specs in a tedious process of navigating shitty menus to buy and sell parts and weapons.

        it's okay, though.

oh, and it gets even more tedious as you find more pilots.

front mission 1st remake gets rid of a lot of the tedium from fights (instant move, instant attack, easier to issue commands with mouse, etc.), but the shop navigation is still depressingly burdensome.

There's a REmake out, dunno if it's good or not but I kinda want to try it out. Only played 3 and a bit of 4.

it's a pretty good remake if you aren't the kind of person who cries about 16bit aesthetic soul vs. 32bit whatever. i think the remake looks pretty decent, considering the low level of detail of the original. it's very true to the original where it can be.

Maybe that's just me, but I find it one of the most impressive SNES games. The isometric maps look good and those background artworks are unique compared to the tiled ones we're used to on this generation.

The music in this game slaps too. And can’t forget the stylish amano character portraits. great vibe for a sleek mech rpg.

It's only difficult at the start. The hardest mission in the game is mission 7 (Hell's Wall). After that the difficulty drops massively.

Late game when your pilots have your skills unlocks your units easily oneshot all enemies including names ones without difficulty.

You kinda just gotta grind in the arena until you can afford the best upgrades at each stage of the game.

    Godlike mecha game
Shame this didn't come to the west like Xenogears did

honestly surprised it didn't. its not a terribly complex game and mecha wasn't totally foreign to westerners at the time. Localized Japanese stuff wasn't big yet aside from Macross/Robotech a decade prior but they could have appealed to the small Mechwarrior/BattleTech boom that was happening at the time.

yeah i was surprised too when i heard it wasnt localized. very weird because mech shit was super cool shit in the 80s for basically every american kid
there is nothing japanese specific in this game at all

The music in this version sounds pretty awful. The track "setting up" is particularly heinous.
