This, I have a hard time believing anyone who actually lived during the PS1 era would ever want to intentionally recreate the horrid graphics from back then, we literally have the power to actually make the renders playable reality now but moronic indie devs just wanna make everything look like pixelated vomit for some reason.
Literally putting the king in yellow in the game, taking stuff directly from Lovecraft. It feels just as hacky as when True Detective did it, actually more so. I get why it's in the game but subtlety is usually better when you are so strongly influenced by other work.
Lovecraft, Evangelion, Monogatari, Silent Hill, etc.
I didn't mind it and maybe even enjoyed it more as a result but a lot of its influences are very blatantly worn on its sleeve.
idk. Silent Hill is simultaneously the scariest game I've played and weirdly comforting at times. Mostly just the snowy foggy town makes me want to curl up with a book.
I loved it and I loved discussing it shortly after release. I even listened to the King in Yellow on audiobook afterwards. It was a weird book that didn’t really make any sense. On the one hand it had supernatural elements (and one of the best short stories I’ve ever read) and on the other it was some weird romance about artists and soldiers. Book was as schizo as I think a book can get, and not even in a good way. Might have been way too high concept for a brainlet like myself.
Great game, though. Legit 9/10 in every way imaginable. Can’t give it 10/10 because I simply didn’t like it enough, but it’s an undeniable masterwork by someone who truly loves the genre and the medium.
just bought it and played one longer session last night. Stylistic and dont know what the gay shit is supposed to be about. All of the characters thus far have been female androids or regular female humans though so maybe it is another case of cross dressing perverts self inserting?
Overall if you liked things like silent hill I am digging it thus far
it is related to how attractive or ugly the women are. If two slampig landwhales its gay as frick. If sexy girls its hot as frick lesbos. Since there are no ugly women in signalis it is in the tasteful lesbianism camp
I spent at least 50% of my time seething at the fricking inventory system. You have 6 slots but really 5 because the flashlight takes a slot and then the game throws literally a billion items at you, a lot of which are quest items. So much time was spent just tracking to and from storage.
Other than that though it was pretty cool. Something about the graphics and art design just really works for me and the combat is oddly satisfying.

Yeah, it's pretty good. It's less good than Darkwood so play that instead if you haven't yet.
