Because sales are the only truly objective metric of how good a game is. Some autistic YouTuber's opinion or the reviews of game journos mean nothing as they are totally subjective. Sales numbers don't lie.
They can be skewed (see how Gen VI was screwed over by how bad Gen V was and how the mess that was Gen IX benefitted from Gen VIII being good) but they're the best we have.

      >sales numbers are an objective measurement of quality
      >except for these two games I like, then they're inaccurate and skewed because

This is what I like to call personal bias. People that try to argue the dumb assessment of "popular = good" will inevitably run into exceptions that they won't enjoy regardless of perception of the product, so instead of understanding that popularity is literally just a group of opinions and has no place in objectivity, they'll perform mental gymnastics as to why it's popular despite not being a good product and continue perpetuating the awful take of "popular = good", performing cognitive dissonance.

If they made a game with 4 gyms and 50 pokemon and it sold super well, is it good?

Objectively it must be, seeing as the market has decided it to be so.

how can we trust that they are buying it because they genuinely believe it's a quality product and not out of comfort and fear of misisng out

People don't spend modern game prices on games they don't believe will be quality products nowadays, anon. Especially in today's economy.

Your opinions are entirely subjective though, as most complaints with a game that don't boil down to actual objective, mechanical flaws as with SV are completely down to individual preference and thus are not objective. In fact, game "quality" is mostly subjective/unquantifiable beyond its ability to make you buy the next one and thus continue the company's ability to make games. Thus it could be argued that sales are the ONLY thing that means anything.

My opinion is superior and I have ascended. My taste is beyond what you shill homosexuals can comprehend. My opinion is fact, and it's the only one that matters. SV is objectively shit because I said so. Cry harder cuck shill.

If he knew the game was shit before hand then he wouldn't have bought it in the first place, meaning it would have one less sale. Explain this, moron.

Because that's how most people think. For example, I know a lot of writers that still believe Avengers: Endgame was one of the best movies in the world, so that means all sagas must end the same way it ended.

This, why do you think Nintendo faps to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

Then why hasn't Pokemon become a mobile-only franchise? GO makes more money on an annual basis than all Pokemon games, both mainline and spinoff, have collectively gathered in their lifetimes COMBINED.

Because lower-level thinkers can't comprehend factors on what makes a game good outside of sales as unlike other factors, sale numbers are easy to understand regardless of intellect and are materially objective regardless of the products quality. Also most people's understanding of pretty much anything being good or not goes as "popular=good", and not much else beyond that.

Plus plenty of actually awful games have sold amazing well. Legacy of Goku on GBA was a really REALLY shit game that sold a few million units on GBA and would often brag about it’s sales despite being carried sololy by the IP. The renewed interest in Pokemon thanks to GO is gonna allow just about any new game now to sell millions in weeks just from IP. How many people do you think bought SV blindly without knowing anything besides “it’s a new pokemon game”
Infact alot of 3rd versions of games sold less than their first versions despite being objective upgrades. They sold less because casuals aren’t interested in double dipping for a game they consider a slight upgrade, especially if they didnt really like the first version. Like telling someone who disliked DP to try out Platinum.

morons have zero concept of things like marketing, install base and pricing affecting the number of sales

you also have situations where a sequel sells great from people's expectations of the previous game, it turns out to be shit, and then the next game which is actually good sells worse from the shit sequel tainting its image

      >sequel which is an objective improvement but almost always sells less

most consumers are just religious people without a religion, safety in numbers and perceived rate of participation gives them comfort similar to churchgoers knowing all their neighbors go to church and pray.

If at any point, this belief of "everyone agrees, I am part of everyone" is threatened, they go apeshit. Now, I am not saying this is le bad, just a way for people to feel safe or validated, the real problem is when they go militant and demandd everyone agrees, or else.

Luckily, all your average shill can do is take HRT and make twitter threads.
