What if a game has a bunch of sidequests with enough meaningful thematic content to get individual 10 minute segments? That'll add up to over an hour pretty quickly. They're products of years of effort and countless inspirations.

I definitely think most of these videos could stand to be cut down a lot, but I do think it's odd how people act like it's inconceivable that some of them are as long as they are. If it's a very specific topic and it's 10 hours long or something then sure, but if it's 10 hours long and it's about a game that's 100 hours long, there's probably plenty to talk about. Whether it's all worth talking about and whether it really requires 10 hours, I don't know, but it's not hard to imagine someone spending that time on it regardless.

I agree that most of those videos could spend less time on whatever their trying to say than they do, but that doesn't mean it's hard to imagine how they would fill out the time to make it longer. Even in the shittiest, most surface level "analysis" of something all you would have to do is just summarize each scene of the game and explain the mechanics in an unnecessary amount of detail. You could do that and easily make a long video out of a long game without ever having to come up with something meaningful to say about it.

I think the general dialectic here is that due to the advertisement heavy nature of the spectacle that is the society your mind is psychologically bombarded with ads that pressure you to consoom content, lest you miss out on being able to connect to your fellow man through that medium of content. If you miss out, or simply just didn't care for it, having someone do something "cringe" that likes that content means that you can then bite back against the pain of missing out on things and you are also able to situate yourself above the masses with your superior sense of taste.

I play Persona because I think it has an addictive structure and I think it does a good job of pulling you into its setting. I also like the MegaTen mechanics in Persona even if I wish the games were harder. I never got the friendship simulator/dating sim thing with Persona anyway seeing as the S. Links and Confidants feel less like social simulation and more like short stories centered around the theme of the game. Obviously there are many waifugays who like Persona, but I feel like if I wanted a dating sim I would just play a dating sim, and if I did want that, then LovePlus would just piss me off if it wasted my time on hours of dungeon crawling and story unrelated to dating and then relegated the dating to a few short scenes in a very long game, but it wouldn't do that because it's an actual dating sim unlike Persona.

All memes aside, are the earthbound games actually good?, I never played any of them when I was young
mother 2 first, mother 1 second, and if you simply must, go for mother 3.
They have very unique settings and atmospheres that haven't really been recreated yet, but it comes at the cost of the gameplay being boring at best and intentionally extremely tedious for the sake of quirkiness at worst.
A lot of western games try to recreate the "Mother" feeling but can't really pull it off because they're being too ironic or self-critical. Mother is very earnest which is very refreshing.

I could almost create this video, I always just played my brothers games or what I saw ads for on TV but they had shown me emulators before so one day I searched for a Super Mario World rom and found a site with it, Kirby’s Superstar and Dreamland 3 which I had NO idea even existed and then a game called Mystical Ninja, which sounded familiar, so I downloaded it, loved it, googled it and found out it was part of the Goemon Series (the name was familiar because we had rented Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon before) and I found out about the Japanese sequels which basically took over my life and introduced me to the full beautiful world of emulation.
That would be a lovely video, especially with how many people seem so alien to emulation.
it has to be popular enough in the vidya zeitgeist that people actually click on the video, but niche enough that the viewer probably hasn't played it and will be curious about exploring it through the easy medium of sitting on your arse AND not even clicking on any buttons.

thinking about it a little more (replying to myself) there's something interesting about wanting all of the feelings and emotional relief of an experience in a game without putting in the effort and time sink of playing through it yourself. media analysis is nothing new but the relatively recent phenomenon of nerds in their bedrooms being able to package up their experience into easily digestible content for millions of people to watch is a new animal entirely. we've gone past the 'review' stage where you get a bit of their personal opinion to help you decide what to buy to just doing the game for you. i don't think it's inherently negative, there are games i'm never going to play because they're stuck in a different language or whatever.
the difference is that you probably actually sat down to play dark souls at some point and derived your own opinion from that.

I've thought long and hard about this in my fantasies of being able to go back in time to try to correct the timeline, and Ive come to the conclusion that unfortunately this shit was inevitable. Even if you had a time machine and killed off all the main perpetrators of homosexualry, social media would inevitably kick off eventually, normalgays would eventually flood the internet and dilute everything, and corporate homosexuals would inevitably follow to suck the life and sterilize everything for the normalgay. You either have to have:
1) A large group of well meaning and intelligent gays that have enough moral character to not be swayed by bribes and also miraculously got in positions of power that coordinate to combat this shit with legislation against rampant data collection and that break up monopolies
or
2) Somehow get the braindead morons to not be so moronic through... frick I dont even know. Education focused entirely on nurturing common sense/logic/parsing data in children? You'd have to fundamentally change most of the human population to not be so fricking stupid, basically

Pile of shit thanks to Tom Fulp's moronation. He deleted all the flash videos that had any copyrighted music in it with no backup, tens of thousands of flashes gone with no warning. Then one year he introduced the ability to mass report reviews that weren't considered good, which lead to the deletion of another tens of thousands of really ancient flash reviews from the very beginning of the website and even the banning of dozens of users who had no clue why. Look at what's on the fricking front page now, videos made my money addicted, starving homosexual artists that are one minute long for one single joke. Nobody puts any fricking effort into anything anymore, they just whip out their Wacom or chink tablet, draw some shitty animation for one week, release it and get their dicks sucked. My longest work took me almost 1 year to complete. Everything disgusts me, nothing I see charms me anymore, it's all cheap, fast and unfunny.

Someone I know only via the internet once went a trip to and took a picture from their hotel room. For shits and giggles, I freaked them out by using the hotel brand and highway system to find not only the hotel on google maps but could even point to the exact room they were staying in.
If it were some actual stalker or something, they could have called the hotel and contrived some reasoning to get the hotel staff to get some info like a name. Now consider all the morons on social media breaking persec at every opportunity and that you can find them with just a name.
You can easily imagine a hypothetical situation: Some moron with an internet persona in a d*scord somewhere posts a shitty low effort f*cebook meme generated with one of those "meme" sites. Except when Robert Hackerman runs that facebook meme through an image search, he finds the original post and see that the original poster only had like a dozen friends/family members who saw it. Then it's a process of elimination when you consider the poster obviously wasn't the geriatric boomer grandparents or random Stacies.

I think the discrepancy in numbers with these two channels is the most clear evidence that shit rises to the top on youtube. Every one of Owen's videos is 10 times more concise, funny and interesting. But SEW gets millions of fans while Owen gets none.
