This is a 2009 game. Why do newer games have such poor art direction in comparison?

pity hires
This game looks amazing as long as you don't see the character's faces.
you can just use an hd texture pack for the faces if they bother you.
HD texture pack is the biggest meme ever, it just makes it worse.
how so?
It looks like shit.
Frick no, the HD texture pack is a meme and makes all of the faces and character models look like lifeless corpses. Just play DE instead.
what? the hd texture pack doesn't change any of the animation rigging on the faces moron. it doesn't change models either. you can also customize it and apply it only to UI if you want.
the HD pack fricks up the UI as well because, among a plethora of other issues, it doesn't display party tension anywhere near as good as the original
sounds like you're being a contrarian frick tbh
the truth is evident: the pack's author didn't know what the frick he was doing outside of 'haha upscaler go brrrr'
what do you mean? all the party tension portraits are uscaled
not dynamic at all
what do you mean by dynamic? you mean the flames that show up? they're there as well
here's a comparison for dunban & reyn
He means the characters expressions don't change.
But he's wrong, they do. There's a lot of things to shit on the texture pack for, but the UI isn't one of them.
I have noticed this shitty trend as well (especially in MH, world and rise look abysmal). Looking forward to your autistic collection.
here's a quick preview, I've got no idea how best to present it, whether to have all the old on the left, new on the right
ideally I'd do a before and after with a .webm which slides between the two but that won't work with the shitty filesize limit here
someone give me advice quick on how to present this
>they do
No they don't.
Who should I trust, my eyes as I'm literally playing it or a random moron on the world-wide web?
This. It's just like two different concept art crops instead of all the different stages.
I personally still think the upscaled eyes are the worst though.
yeah
when someone manages to make a technically ugly game even uglier, it's actually quite impressive
DE ruins the aesthetic, color, and lighting of all the areas in the game.
it's Japanese and they actually put passion in what they make, westoids would have this too if not for the required hiring of unqualified minorities simple as
Games have not changed in 30 years, we keep repeating the same gameplay, graphic styles, landscapes, everything
It's almost unfair how bad Universe was compared to how good it looks in places.
I like both, but as far as PSU gameplay goes I much rather play PSP2i
W-what happened to India?
For me, it's FF13 when you step out of a cave like zone and you see the other side of cocoon in the sky, it really hits you that the world is the inside of a sphere.
Only the environments look any good, everything else looks terrible especially those fricking armor sets LMAO
Bottom right and top right are decent
This game is 8 year old.
what is this supposed to mean?
I think he means Watch Dogs is 8 years old
it sure looks like it
Oh it shows
I can tell.
>over the shoulder walking sim with nagging map shit
It was because of CRTs and PLASMA TVs.
LED is really shit, so the devs don't bother to enhance the image if it's going to look like shit anyway.
Xenoblade is one of those Wii games that run in forced widescreen. I was going to play it again before Xenoblade 3 but it was horrible on my bedroom CRT TV. Maybe I'll just get DE.
Because they don't have an art direction at all.
>scanned assets
>generated maps
>generated rocks, trees, etc
There's no actual style since there's no human actually making anything.
I know your post is a shitty “Old good new bad” and i was reading to call you a moron but i can’t help but to agree that xenoblade 1 had amazing scenaries. what a beautiful game. if only the gameplay were as good
anti-soul gas/fog hits every game
no more color, just washed out crap and the same HUD in every single game
I'm working on my Autist Opus, a giant pic which shows the clear decline of visuals and the art of video games, will be finished in a few hours
bottom looks better
Galdin quay is better than the besaid beach, if you're cherry picking you can make ffxv look much worse
the colour in 3U-XX mh was saturated the frick was an attempt to make shit visible on the 3ds, prior games had a more muted palette more in line with 5th gen
this with movies
making everything dark isn't just fantasy. It's a pretty lazy filmmaking trend to show off how nice your camera is.
And yet PS1/2 fog is considered to be soul, just like MGS games color palettes.
GU is too colorful and flashy but still retains a lot of the beauty of older games
world looks like the proper modernization of monhun, realistic graphics without looking bland
rise has nice clarity and a certain "sharpness" to everything even if the graphics are worse than what it's based on
artists vs technicians.
It's the open world meme. Games like this needed actually good looking backgrounds that conveyed a sense of scale. Now you just generate a map in a 3D model and you're done. It's soulless.
>why problem
Always gay homosexuals.
Seriously they killed Microsoft, snoy and they're coming for your favorite thing if they had not already.
>generic grass field open world game screencap
What about this is supposed to be good?
Xenoblade 1 was lightning in a bottle. Not even Monolith can repeat it. They literally reuse its original Wii assets in 3 lol
But they did. X was everything one was but better.
And this is a 2006 game on even weaker hardware.
I don't mean to bash the newer games too much, they still look nice, but during that stretch from Xenosaga EpIII to Xenoblade X, Monolithsoft was pulling off some absolute wizardry with their game worlds. Gorgeous stuff.
I loved that you could just jump off that fricking cliff and go over to those waterfalls. There was a bunch of items over there for you to collect.
If it was a western game there'd be an invisible wall there because jumping off a cliff and surviving is "un-cinematic" and "unrealistic"
I love how that entire area serves no purpose whatsoever in the main story yet you can still explore literally all of it
You can't teach passion and dedication and love to a craft.
Because the industry is now filled with graduates who studied "game design" in school, something which anyone with even half a fricking brain would understand can't be distilled into an academic program. They are all learning arbitrarily standardized ways of doing things decided upon by self-appointed authorities, on top of having it drilled into them that going against the grain or exercising any artistic freedom whatsoever is extremely badwrong, which leads to nonsense like the Horizon devs crying over Elden Ring's UI.
Only indie games have any actual passion and creativity put into them anymore, which is frankly good enough for me. Major studios can only pull this off once in a blue moon anymore, but as their longtime veterans leave and die off in the coming years, there won't be any reason left to pay attention to what any publisher shits out.
