Time gating is a very common mechanic in shitty f2p games, usually with an option to buy out of the time gating. WoW is notable for being a huge budget, AAA title that resorts to dogshit Chinese mmo monetization and retention schemes. Presumably because they aren't confident in the actual game to keep people playing.
WoW was never good and anyone who says otherwise literally loves eating shit.

This, Blizzard's disgusting pauldroncore art style is one of the worst in the entire gaming medium.
It is the year 2022, and that is an RPG. However, that is not a 2022 RPG. It is a 2004 RPG which, even at the time of release, opted for performance over technical impressiveness. It looks the way it does because updating the graphics to 2022 standards would be a massive investment from a company so incompetent that they can't churn out shitty, repetitive content at a rate swift enough to satisfy their brain-damaged fan base. As to why the story is so shit, well, I'm of the opinion that Blizzard has never written a good story in their existence. However, from friends who disagree with that statement, I gather that the majority of their writers have left due to the aforementioned incompetency.

This but for XIV, every time people praise that joke of a game I feel like I'm having an out of body experience. It's utterly forgettable mindless grinding, even when compares to WoW. It's especially telling when there's an option to pay to skip the original fricking story.

wow till wotlk mechanically blows ff14 out of the water. But ff14 does have a more compelling story that surprised me, and it’s clothing/armor system is light years better. Wow hasn’t made an armor set that doesn’t look like shit in like a decade.
Also lalafel are funnier than gnomes.
I got bored of ff14, but I thought the thaumatage quest line was really touching.
That said, in terms of class design, wow really was great. Wow mage is vastly more compelling experience than ff14 black mage, which is basically using a ton of buttons to do nothing but dps

No builds now, but Dragonflight will bring back skill trees. Whether or not they actually make for build variety is anyone's guess, but Blizzard fricks up everything, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Wasn't much variety back in the day anyway. Talents were too granular to play around with for the most part. Some nerd with a calculator and sim program figured out your build and you went with that, probably. I guess you could go rogue but you would end up with basically the same playstyle, just worse performance.
Sure, I don't disagree with you at all. That's why I added, "Blizzard fricks everything up". Tbf I think the idea of builds in an MMO is paradoxical, because so-long as there is a numerical "optimal" approach, not using it will only put yourself or your group at a disadvantage. Like, if someone isn't running the meta, they're either too moronic to know it, or else intentionally gimping the success of the group for their own fun. Weeeeeeee.
