At this point, it's almost impossible to get reasonable discussion about Sonic games. It has huge swaths of people, both pro and con, who will defend their opinion violently online, who have not really played the games.

It's solid, but it feels like Sonic is on roller blades, and since it's isometric it makes any part in which you need to platform or jump at something a lot harder to do. Thankfully with a lot of standard enemies you don't need to jump on them and can run towards them then hit the spin dash button to go from running into a spinning ball since you have yourself lined up.

It's weird that there's both a genesis and saturn version of this game and somehow the genesis version seems better. The music especially

Fun fact: the Saturn port was made in 7 weeks. It was only made as a fallback when Xtreme got delayed the first time.

No wonder it doesn't seem like much of an upgrade over the genesis version. The color pallet is better obviously but that kinda seems like that's it. Obv the bonus stages are wildly different.

It's the same exact code according to Jon Burton. All the new graphics outside of the bonus stages are just an overlay essentially.

The point of an analog stick is to have fully fluid movement and go beyond a D-pad. Sega controllers were also good for 8-direction movement instead of the "clicky-click in 4-directions" movement of a Sony of whatever you emulated it with.

List your favorite tracks from each version (for simplicity I'm combining the Acts and going for the Zones overall).
        >Opening
        Gen
        >Title
Sat wins by default since Gen is silent
        >Main Menu
Gen wins by default since Sat is silent
        >Green Grove
I like Gen more but Sat suits it better
        >Rusty Ruin
I like Gen more but Sat suits it better
        >Spring Stadium
Sat despite the unforgettable silliness of Act 2, always thought Gen was rather meh
        >Diamond Dust
        Gen by far
        >Volcano Valley
        Gen by far
        >Gene Gadget
        Gen, Sat is too subdued
        >Panic Puppet
I like both a lot, Sat is more typical of Zones since Gen Acts aren't remixes (should also be noted that Gen Act 1 is also the intro which Sat doesn't have)
        >Speed Up
I prefer Gen's usual speeding of the current track
        >Invincibility
Gen, for one it ends at the correct instant it wears off
        >Game Over
Gen because I like the animation and effect
        >Continue
Sat is unique but dammit Gen is classic
        >Special Stage
Both suit their own Special Stage, but I guess Gen overall
        >Obtaining the Emerald
I like the uniqueness of Sat in this instance
        >Act Clear
Sat since it's just a redone version of Gen, but should note the Special Stage results screen is strangely silent in the Sat ver.
        >Boss
Gen has two alternating tracks, so I feel it has to win by default.
        >Bad Ending
Sat wins by default since Gen is just sound effects
        >Final Fight
Sat for sure, Gen is too laid back
        >Good Ending
Sat fits the animation but I prefer Gen (also used in Director's Cut for Super Sonic transformation)
        >Credits
I feel like Gen is better as a bad end and Sat is better for a good end, but if I had to choose, Sat is too corny, and Gen is meant as a bittersweet epilogue to the classic era of Sonic
All in all, leaning close to 3/5 in favor of Gen.

          >Opening
          Sataturn
          >Green Grove
a tie, but you know just to prove how the Jacques score is epic I'll hand each tie to the Mega Drive
          >Boss
          tie, so MD
          >Rusty Ruin
          Saturn
          >Spring Stadium
Saturn, but Act 2 is shit in both
          >Special Stage
          Saturn
          >Volcano Valley
          MD by a longshot
          >Gene Gadget
          Saturn homie
          >Panic Puppet
          tie, so MD
          >Final Fight
          Saturn
          >Act Clear
          Saturn
          >Continue
          MD
          >Good ending
          MD
          >Credits
          Tie, so MD
          >Chaos emerald
          that's a sound effect homie
          >Invincibility
MD, even though I love intelligent dance, the MD track fits more

          Count:
          >MD 8
          >Saturn 7

And you know this is just comparing the tracks that are shared; Saturn has the title theme, speed shoes, bad end, basically I'm cumming

I agree with the bittersweet idea though, I love minor key

GEN overall, I do like SAT Act 1 though. SAT Act 2's Clown Zone is pretty bad.
          >Diamond Dust
          I like both
          >Volcano Valley
          GEN
          >Gene Gadget

It's not really weird at all. Genesis was at the end of its life by that point so technically you should be able to get the most out of a system by then since everyone would have figured out how it works and what tricks to use to get the best results. With Saturn it was the opposite and a brand new system which developers would have the least experience working with.

I think as kids a lot of people tried to jump on enemies without the homing power up instead of using the spin dash which made it feel clunky. Also, the level designs can be a bit confusing for younger people. One thing I do think is genuinely bad is the platforming, but supposedly the directors cut fixes that, but I haven’t tried it yet.

It's a fine game, it just was too small potatoes for 1996. Think about the kinds of games it was coming out against. People were looking at Sonic 3D Blast next to Tomb Raider and Super Mario RPG. Let alone Super Mario 64. It was pretty rinky dink and lacked the breadth of scale of even Sonic 3 + Knuckles. So despite being a good game on it's face it was seen as evidence of Sonic and Sega's collapse and inability to compete.

The directors cut is the worst version. It's Saturn (soul overload), then MD original (pretty good game), then DX (cringe basedshit)

Even if you disliked the "one Emerald per ZONE" thing it includes the unaltered original playthrough as an option.

The Saturn version's loadtimes are actually generally worse than '06 if you can believe it because at least '06 doesn't enter a loading screen when you lose a life. Supposedly the Japanese version released years later shortens the loading a bit but removes the cheat code. It must be an informal test since I've never seen a timed comparison and YouTubers are just cut or trim the loading screens out of most videos anyway. In general I don't get the early "let's convert a cartidge game to CD" sensibilities of that gen, Sonic 3D still doesn't have a save system like 3&K so it still expects you to be done with it in one sittings which the Genesis version does a much better job for what it is.

I felt for a long time that 3D Blast was a solid game. It plays nothing like Sonic, but its still a decent game. It has some of the best graphics for the Sega Genesis and good soundtrack.

I only played a tiny bit. Its probably decent tbh, but its not what most ppl want out of a sonic game. I can only imagine how dissapointed people were back when it was released, after playing the other sonic genesis games.

I remember playing it at a Toys R Us when it was a demo unit and being instantly bored. I didn't have a Genesis but had played the first 3 games at least a little and through they were cool. No clue why they put shit like this or Uniracers in their demo units when the intention was to sell systems.

Could've been good if the version that released had more development time to be closer to the eventual director's cut, and I secretly wish that the Mega Drive edition got canceled just so we can say Sonic had an original platformer on the Saturn.

If you haven't played it through the Director's Cut OP you really should. It's a patch by the game's original programmer.
Fills it with QoL improvements that make the game much more playable. Stuff like easier movement and a Flicky radar for ones on the field. Can't imagine playing without it.

Okay so what's the deal here, is the DX version really shit or is it the best way to play and it's just Saturn virgins coping ITT?

The DX hack is mostly unnecessary fluff added in because the director was bored and figured he'd frick around with his old work, but at least it lets you still play the original unaltered game and so there's really no harm in putting it in.

Well, I might be odd for saying this, but I really wish Sonic 3D Blast had some sort of sequel. I know SEGA will never do it because it's a concept that got poorly received by fans overall, but it's odd to me that not even Sonic's massive fan gaming community has never made an actual 3D version of this concept. With more polish, this could work well, it's not a concept that is doomed from the start, especially if you switch the isometric view for a real 3D one, platforming would be more viable and would open up possibilities for level design, it also solves one issue I have with 3D Sonic, which is that you can ignore the enemies completely if you want since the extra axis makes it easier to just go around them, enemies have become less and less important for Sonic's gameplay over the years, and this formula solves that, while also being the only real Sonic Collect-A-Thon until now, which I feel is something Sonic could thrive in.
