This is actually an amazing premise for a setting, but the writing wasnt there to carry it.

This is actually an amazing premise for a setting, but the writing wasn’t there to carry it. I would like to have seen them take this further in subsequent games, in any case.

Geez, I’ve been wanting to play this for the longest time ever. Looks really good. It always looked like Square Enix’s version of Phantasy Star Online

Boy are you in for a disappointment.

It's a great game but it's nothing like PSO.
You get sci-fi stuff in maybe 10% of the game, the rest takes place on a generic medieval planet where everyone has to do the "don't introduce primitive society to technology" thing. It is for all intents and purposes just another fantasy RPG.

just play 2 or 4 instead, they are way better.

I don't normally spoil games for people, and I won't here, but I almost feel like with Star Ocean 3 that I'm doing you a disservice by not telling you the big twist. Because it's stupid enough that it will seriously piss you off even though the rest of the game is breddy gud.

      Also, GLOOOORRRYYY TO AAAAAIIRRRYYYGLYYYPHHHH~~~~~~

OP here. It’s not really good, not at all. SO2 is really good though. That said, SO3 introduces a plot twist that a lot of people think is shitty, yet my point is that it sets up lore that had tremendous story potential, which the writers simply couldn’t live up to.

Everytime someone says an JRPG is actually shit I go yes thank you. I don't have to play it anymore and can take it off the backlog. This is definitely one of those meme backlog games

I dropped this piece of trash after the dragon temple with button pressure sensitivity gimmick puzzle. The fire underground cave was absolutely bullshit with the constant MP death which i hated the most. The crafting system is very moronic and hard to follow. Glad I dropped the game.

It’s a great game, but it’s got some flaws. I loved Star Ocean 2, so I bought a PS2 specifically for this game and I played it to death, so there’s definitely some bias here.
Invention system isn’t very deep till the end game, and is very expensive to experiment with, if you find yourself losing money just save before you start experimenting and load if you fail a bunch.
The plot twist is fine, and people don’t understand the irony of making a big deal out of it considering what it the game is to begin with.
It’s got some really bad pacing issues, especially the later part of the first disc, they ask you to marathon several really long dungeons and then ask you to backtrack out and across the map, then immediately back into those dungeons. No excuses, it just sucks.
There are a lot of positives and unique things it has going for it too though. It’s got an absurd amount of challenging post game content that can keep you busy for at least 100 hours if you want to see it all.
The battle system is pretty deep and nuanced and honestly my favorite part.
The invention system is a game of knowledge, once you understand how it works and remember a few number ranges, you can break the game wide open on subsequent playthroughs.
It has a proto-achievement system that gives you like 300 trophies, and you unlock stuff like costumes as you hit certain percentages.
Great, but flawed game. At least try it out. If you can make it past the end of disc 1 slog, you’re in for a good time.

Can relate, Xenogears is my favorite game and I followed Xenosaga's development every day for YEARS only for it to be an abortion (even ep3 isn't very good).

Definetely. I was pretty sad that the sequels never went there again. My jaw literally dropped at the great revelation. I dunno or care if it has flaws. I love it.

Were they ever sued by Paramount for ripping off half the Star Trek techno babble?

Funny story, before the game came out a guy from squeenix actually met with some people from paramount to get permission(more a formality because they were going through with it anyways, just might not have got a localozation as quickly) and they told him to go ahead and do whatever he wanted as long as he didn't use the Star Trek name, character names, ship names, etc. They gave him permission because they thought he was George Takei.

It's been an interesting ride to see TtEoT be this game that everyone wanted to play when it released
to a game people realized just plain fricking sucks

I liked it enough to beat it. It's not bad from what I remember. It looks uglier than I remember, though.

The hype was so great I bought it on release never having played SO2. Dropped it so fricking fast, it ended up being one of my rare trade-ins.
