I tried it and didn't like it. I realized once I got past the tutorial I spent most of my time staring at the mana bar and spamming crap to counter the CPU also spamming crap. It felt really mindless

base game, with expansion pack, or 2012 rerelease, they're all good.
if i'm not mistaken there's a fan made version that adds in nearly every card that exists.

that looks pretty easy and straightforward, there's also getting the iso files and such instead, if you know your way around mounting and installing ect.

I'm on the same boat, but sadly we know how the industry is nowadays. All we have to do is compare Shandalar to something like Magic: Arena, I have no doubt the latter has made more money than the former, much more in fact, and it's probably much easier and cheaper to make compared to a full RPG with things like towns, dungeons, your own character which can move around and explore the world, etc. What hurts the most is that, with current technology, they could probably make an RPG that's superior and more immersive than Shandalar in literally every way, they simply don't bother because, well, why would they?

        >they simply don't bother because, well, why would they?
It hurts so much. Even Yugioh stopped bothering with their comfy RPG card games like a decade ago. I need that fix and it just doesn't exist anywhere...

I recall Yu-Gi-Oh! having so many RPGs in the late 90'/early 2000's, and those weren't even the tip of the iceberg, Konami would make so many titles that were downright experimental too, and while that did turn many players off, it was also good in the sense that no matter what sort of player you were, there was probably a Yu-Gi-Oh! video game that would appeal to you in some way. I loved Forbidden Memories (PS1), Duel Monsters (GB), Dark Duel Stories (GBC) and Sacred Cards (GBA), all for different reasons, as flawed as all of them were, it always felt immersive for some reason.

I gave Master Duel a shot recently, and it's just not for me, this whole gacha/mobile structure, constantly telling me to do more tutorials, how to get more currency to open packs, to do more missions, log in bonuses, PvP... it's overwhelming and doesn't appeal to me at all, and the only campaign seems to be focused on the lore of cards I don't care about. I just want to play as my character, input my name, and then go on an adventure using my deck of cards, improving it over time and having the cards act almost as the EXP/Level in an RPG, I want to be immersed in a world, but that's over now.

You should give the World Championship and Tag Force games a try. Depending on if you have any fond memory of the animes or not, they're basically the closest you can get to Shandalar in terms of how you progress through the games though not as anywhere near as freeform as it of course.

              Anonymous

I don't know if it counts as one of the World Championship titles or if it's just a pre cursor, but I've started playing Eternal Duelist Sould a while back, since its structure reminded me of Duel Monsters 1 and Dark Duel Stories with the tier system, it's been fun, though I don't play it often. I'm also interested in trying out 7 Trials of Glory eventually since the overworld reminds me of how Sacred Cards did things, almost Pokémon like. I've never considered the Tag Force titles before, but I'll take a look at them if I manage to finish my backlog of GBA ones any time soon, either way thank you for the recommendations! Seriously, it's impressive how many Yu-Gi-Oh! titles Konami released for portable systems during the 2000's, they made sure to milk it as much as possible it seems, still I do plan on playing more of them in the future, because this is from a time when Konami was still excelent for the most part.

Yeah Eternal Duelist Soul and the first few World Championship games are basically like Dark Duel Stories, The ones on the DS (most specifically the 5Ds ones) are full on RPGs with stories and an OC character you explore a world.

I should give this a try, old MTG from my childhood is comfy. I tried getting back into it about a decade ago but I just didn't enjoy the newer additions as much. Well, that and the cost of building competitive decks.

Friendly reminder for fans of Microprose's MtG game, you can play decks against AI using Card Forge. Also supports draft, cube, and commander play. Covers everything from Alpha to the current shit. Even has a quest mode so you can start with a basic lame deck like Shandalar and upgrade with cards and booster packs you win along the way. Also has a store where you can buy more health points and other upgrades like in Shandalar using the in-game currency you get from winning duels and selling cards.

            >Mana sources include 1 island, 1 mountain, black lotus, mox ruby, mox sapphire, and volcanic island

That seems like a really slim mana source percentage, how consistent is it?

there are 4x of the artifacts and 4x volcanic islands as well

Even with two mulligans, the amount of card draw plus ancestral recalls, timetwisters and wheels of fortune means you'll be getting 2 mana and a time walk soon enough to start a permanent loop. Eventually you start cycling about half your deck every turn, and have all mox's and lotuses out. Every planewalker is optional, the card draw and time walks are the real engine. Used the same deck(minus the planewalkers of course) in Shandalar to wipe out all 500 of the end boss's health. Didn't have all fours, but had enough cards to make it work anyways.
22 mana cards is plenty for a deck that uses 4 at most for the expensive cards, and mox's and lotuses means you can ramp up your mana lightning fast, even if you have to mulligan a few times. An opening hand with a lotus, 1 land, and an ancestral recall or time walk is very much win-able. Even cheap OP decks will struggle to get you below 10 health before you enter infinite turns.

                >22 mana cards

That makes more sense now, for some reason I was only counting 18 the first read of that list

That's the old red-blue blast deck, right? Minus Psionic Blasts, plus planeswalkers.

              Anonymous

Yep. Could also switch out the planeswalkers for Library of Leng and Ivory Tower, Fireball, and maybe Force of Will if you really wanna get mean. There's good reasons why so many of these cards are banned, and this deck is a great example of why.

I have to take a look at this later, looks like Yu-Gi-Oh!'s EDOPRO and Dueling Book, but with a sort of campaign, which is something I always wished the simulators I mentioned would've added at some point, though I know it can be tough to program, this is an impressive fan effort.

I disagree, maybe its current state isn't the best, but at its core Magic is excelent overall.

      Anonymous

yes but there is something gained by having a subgame of actually building your deck. The non card part of wandering shandalar and trying to margin trade cards, avoiding turbo nerd monsters you can't beat yet and looking for quests you could do was pretty good. It would be a huge improvement if the card markets of cities were expanded instead of having to seek out nomad bazaar random encounters when you had a pile of gold.

Indeed, even for those that aren't too into playing M:tG itself, doing things like deck building and exploring the world of Shandalar with its RPG mechanics has its own appeal. Just a shame the formula was never experimented again with and refined.

I miss when we had card game RPGs like this, Pokémon has a couple on GBC, Yu-Gi-Oh! had tons on so many consoles, and Magic had Shandalar. Nowadays all of them still have video game adaptations, but whose only focus is taking your money through microtransactions, and essentially just try to recreate the card game for PvP, nothing wrong with that, but I miss that RPG feel with actual stories that they used to have.

I've never played Duelists of the Roses, but it always looked fantastic, lovely aesthetic and OST, with a unique gameplay to match. I grew up with Forbidden Memories, the predecessor to Duelists of the Roses, so it should at least be somewhat familiar to get into it, even if they changed the gameplay drastically. I miss when Yu-Gi-Oh! video games felt special, but I doubt we'll ever get anything like them ever again, and sadly I'd say this goes for Magic and Pokémon too, there will probably never be a new Shandalar or a new Pokémon TCG RPG.

i think Epic Games is giving away one this week until next week, check that out maybe, and also a brand new game just came out too, a standalone Gwent singleplayer game based on Witcher 3

I remember the early days of M:tG. The costs of doing things were much lower, but the cards did not have much recycle-ability or multi-functions contingent on non-mana based conditions to execute. It was a simpler time. I remember everyone called the Prodigal Sorcerer "Tim" for some unknown reason. Back then, Microprose would just release banger after banger of games. Civilization, Masters of Magic, Masters of Orion, X-com, etc. and pairing their game expertise with the most popular card game of the time was just fire. I had to quit the card game, due to M:tG's financial un-sustainability business model for the players. That's why I hoped a digital form can assist with keeping the game I enjoyed alive. Not like people could accept the cheap land destruction deck I enjoyed with sinkholes and strip mines.

How likely do you all think it is for us to ever get a new release in the same style as Shandalar? As in a M:tG RPG with exploration and dungeons.

I personally feel that it's almost impossible, Magic: Arena probably makes much more money than a Shandalar sequel ever could, they won't bother.
Still, I recall many sequel and remake announcements surprising me before, coming out of nowhere, so we never know for sure, time will tell really.

MtG is nofunallowed.jpg in the current year. The odds of another cool single player game with quests and dungeons is zero unless a fan makes it.

I see, that's a real shame, this concept has so much potential and it's how I believe card game video games can truly shine, but single player keeps being left in the dust in favor of systems that allow for microtransactions and endless spending from players. Well, at least we'll always have Shandalar to play, or fan projects as you've said, they can't take that away from us, at least not for now. Perhaps it's better this way, just because Shandalar has a good concept it doesn't mean that they wouldn't butcher it nowadays.

WOTC did recently try to do an MTG MMORPG and it basically died in early access.

from what i remember it was basically diablo with magic cards.

I recall hearing about this being rejected and hated by plays for being a lootbox filled mess, so good riddance I suppose, it just serves to remind us that maybe it's for the best that Shandalar was never attempted again, they'd probably ruin it.
