If you can tolerate the graphics and unorthodox controls (and Im using this term entirely in the context of modern gaming; there's nothing actually wrong with them) you should play through the original trilogy. I think you'll discover something truly unique and exciting that you just won't be able to find in any modern game. Use a crt filter to soften up the graphics if they bother you that much. Believe it or not they actually look good on an old display.

They're a nice change of pace, everything is very slow and methodical - that means boring to some but give it a chance and you might love it. The atmosphere of the old RE games is really unique and comfy, they're such a good blend of serious and silly. The sound design, the environments, the corny dialogue, it all just works. Unironically they just have a lot of soul, there isn't really anything else like them and the newer ones don't even try and capture it

I played the remaster of the 1st one, 2019 remake of second one and emulated the original of third one a year ago. Personally I think the gameplay loop of exploring the areas and trying to find the most optimal route with least zombie bites/ammo wasted etc. is pretty good. The controls were dated as hell though and really frustrating at times. Overall worth it imo.

What other games like old school RE are there?
How far back are you willing to go? There's Parasite Eve 1 and 2(PSX), Carrier(Dreamcast), Soul of the Samurai(PSX) to start with. All of them range in quality, but they do scratch the old school RE itch.
