ps2 had a longer life span so they dont think about the ps2 as a console from 2000 they think of it as a console from at least 2006 or even 2010 because games were still being made for it well after the ps3 was well established as the "current gen" and the last ps2 game to come out was in 2014
and the actual console itself was still actively being produced and sold in 2013.
also dreamcast was released 2 years before ps2. and was discontinued in 2001, and the last dreamcast game to be released was in 2004.
so if you look at the total history of both consoles there really isn't anything to compare.

I was able to buy a PS2 about a year after it launched and I traded in my 64 and all my games. So, that's a $300 PS2 and Final Fantasy X and a memory card. It was 2001 and I was 13, good times.
