This is the best Action rpg and They won't make it again because it's a spin off. It Mixes strategy and player agency better than the mainline games and it's not some shit ass turn based rpg.

Absolutely HATED this game and felt gyped for buying it
I traded it in after just a week
Once you get the hang of the NO U card break system it's super fun. Stopping bosses from playing the game is the most satisfying shit ever. Allowing for freedom of movement while shuffling cards makes for better resource management since you can dodge attacks without spending any cards.
I didn't have to buy it, it came for free with the first release of 2FM

I really liked the GBA game as a kid who lacked a PS2, but was never interested in the remake. The 3D style of gameplay seemed gimped by the card gameplay.

tbh I think the first game is something special. Combat is clunky and has wasted potential, but the story is kinda alright (sometimes). There's a cutscene with Riku and Sora early on in Traverse Town that plays really naturally, almost like it's not an awkwardly-translated piece of Japanese media. They actually re-timed all the cutscenes animations *specifically for the English dub* which is super fricking impressive. Love the high-poly cutscenes animations to this day, they still look cool.
KH2 on the other hand is such a fricking poorly-localized game, they didn't re-time the cutscene animations and the difference is night and day. Not sure if it'd matter though, the writing is drivel in KH2 anyway. Combat is sublime though.
Chain of Memories is great on GBA and is complete shit on PS2, the game was clearly not designed have enemies that you can't see at all times, and the acting and cutscene pacing is atrocious. But on GBA it's fine. Game is repetitive and the world rehashes suck, but the story is kinda compelling, if only for the fact that Sora goes through some dark shit and it's not overly convoluted yet. Text localization is pretty decent too.

You're right about the PS2 game, but the GBA game was also bad for different reasons, it played like a really shitty and clumsy beat-em-up with cards. Nobody really liked it back then, this revisionism that it's the sekrit good version is dumb.

No, I'm telling the zoomer kingdom hearts fanboys who are trying to rewrite vidya history that the common census of the game back then was that it was pretty shit. The battle system is clunky and imbalanced, eventually you come to realise that all you have to do is spam blizzard and fire cards to plow through the game. Movement is really awkward, the game is just a lazy retread of most of the KH1 worlds (they even awkwardly cut one due to licensing issues). It's not a good game, the PS2 version also being bad or arguably worse doesn't make it good.
I was a kid when CoM came out and it was my first KH game actually and I really enjoyed it not to mention it was among the top talked about games on gamefaqs for years back when that actually meant something. So you're full of shit.

just get yourself KH2FM, play on critical mode (maybe even lv1 critical mode), skip every cutscene and enjoy the ride. It's a blast to play.
