What do you even play on a Steam Deck?

Honestly, far more games than you'll ever feel like playing on a console. Especially a PS5 with no games to play!

I'm currently playing the little nightmares franchise

I started with Deus Ex Invisible War, then played KotoR 2, Disco Elysium, FF1-3 and FF8, Dave the Diver, some Half Life 1 mods like They Hunger, vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and I'm currently playing the remasters of Tomb Raider 1-3. Gonna play the original Deus Ex on it this year too. I also have access to my entire emulation library on there, but I've not really used it beyond getting it set up properly.

Everything. That's the point of the steam deck. It's the only handheld that allows for you to play pretty much anything on it.

You can't play AAA games on it, because of the small screen. That'd be like watching the Lord of the Rings movies on a smartphone.
And the hardware is too weak to connect it to a big tv or monitor and get decent graphics at a 1080p resolution or higher.
So yeah, if you settle down with emulation up to PS1 or PS2 at the max and some indie pixel games, then it is a decent console.

      Anonymous

AAA games are slop so I don't really play them, but I've streamed Hogwarts Legacy and AC Odyssey from my PC to the Deck and had absolutely no problems playing them on the screen.

Is SteamOS good? Some other handhelds have Windows which is probably clunky

      Anonymous

Yeah it's good but you have to go regularly to the desktop mode to do things. Once the games are setup it's seamless though and you can remain in steam os. My favorite part is being able to do all kinds of settings on a per game basis. I honestly had only great experiences once a game was ready to be played in the OS.

      Anonymous

its very similar to Windows in many ways, obviously it was made with the deck in mind so it controls bearably

i prefer not to use desktop mode if i can help it, but its mandatory if you want to patch old games to make em work or improve performance or add widescreen

that goes double if you want to install emulators

      Anonymous

Big Picture mode is very user friendly although there are some UI things I don't like, such as FRTC, TDP and upscaling settings only being accessible from the "..." menu while in-game rather than the general settings at any time although I understand it was done this way to idiotproof the system.

Desktop mode is not a huge departure from windows, the only learning curves are the file system structure (linux equivalent of program files is hidden by default) and learning controller shortcuts for OS functions, I also find that the onscreen keyboard can refuse to launch sometimes but this can be fixed by scrolling between gamepad and desktop input modes.

I returned my Steam Deck and got this thing. It's honestly very based since it actually runs modern games without and tinkering like being forced to dual boot into windows. Palworld could barely run on the 'eck, but it ran flawlessly on the ally.

Still returned it though because the battery life was shit. I'll just wait until the Deck 2 or something since the technology for current handhelds to be worth it just isn't there yet.

Battery life for the OLED is okay from what I've heard (I only used the LCD), but that still doesn't fix the problem of it being very underpowered.

I don't want to be a part of your circlejerk anyways. Just pointing out the value for money isn't quite there yet. A chinkheld that's cheaper can do what the Deck does for my use case, which is mostly emulation anyways.

this. all of the handhelds are just not quite there yet. the performance of even the best is slightly too low. the battery life isnt enough to take out of the house unless youre staying at like 5w. i enjoy my free Steam Deck a lot but I wouldnt have paid $500 for it especially if i was planning on actually using it out of the house like it was meant to be used. win11 blows so ill be stuck waiting for the next steam deck for years. the steam deck is close to the battery life i want but at the loss of performance the others provide to be actually useful.

          >this. all of the handhelds are just not quite there yet. the performance of even the best is slightly too low.

i disagree, see in previous generations console or PC games did not run on handhelds, unless you got a heavily gimped version

it was really the switch the one that made AAA run in a portable

so the performance isnt the issue since these games are not meant to run portably, that being said, it would be nice if more devs made their games run on lower specs, which not only would increase their sales for handheld PC, but also would allow desktop users with potatoes to run the games

Deck recognize my 16-years-old account and can download any game of my backlog, install emulators and import roms of pendrives, in a single click. Deck is the best option.

Tried modding New Vegas on deck. 25% of said mods are literally uninstallable because they're Windows tailored, 25% works if you hack around to "make" it work.

New Vegas Steam deck guy from the original here.

I've been using the viva new vegas guide just to get the basics running like modern hardware compatibility, shit ton of bug fixes, scripting installation . Basically everything to get vanilla New vegas running smoothly and bug/crash free. and Since nobody created a mod compilation for this you have to download each and individual god forsaken like 120 mods, extract them, and install them. Oh you gotta test run the game every 10 mods or so to make sure you didn't frick up and one of the mods causes a crash. Add this with dealing with linux compatibility issues with a lot of Windows based mods on top of it and you got a head of a shit wienertail sandwich.

This is what I don't get. Which windows-based mods? You are already using the windows game through proton? Script extender works fine?

All, I'm saying is I had no issues copying my windows installation of 100+ mods, although it was an old one, since I haven't played in quite a while.

PEBKAC aside, the legitimate problem with mods on Linux is when a game has a Linux port and there are mods for the Windows version, like the Psychonauts widescreen patch being a dinput8.dll for the Windows version, which will work in Proton with the appropriate Wine DLL override but won't work with the Linux version. Not that it really matters, because the only things that need correction for widescreen are the HUD and the cutscenes, but it's just one example. A lot of simple but essential mods (like widescreen patches) are DLL files.

Getting Sonic mods to work on the Deck has put my patience to work, since most of them are built around a Windows launcher called Hedgemod Manager. It technically works on Linux but requires a lot of upfront elbow grease

Majority of the New vegas mods are no problem but the custom exe programs that does something to the new vegas data is expecting to run Windows platform.

One big one if I remember is the 4gb ram exe patcher that's only works on Windows and I don't have the tech skills to make linux jump up and make compatible

That first part is what I wanted to know. Like you remembered a pic and then deliberately attached it since it seemed so strangely fitting. I myself don't keep reaction images and always google them if I remember something that would fit well.

I measured mine some time ago. Attempting to EQ that huge 7k mountain makes it sound weird compared to all my other audio equipment including my mostly flat tower speakers. Below 600hz it rolls off linearly until around 250 where it plummets, the small speakers obviously cant handle it. Pretty sure boosting anything under 250 will cause major distortion and your mileage will vary in the 250 to 600 region. They sound fine stock so I stopped messing with it. I've considered going back to try to tame the treble again but Easy effects is a piece of shit with a gui that breaks constantly. I love opening and closing a program over and over again every time I make a single change.

what accessories do you guys use if any? dock is just so you can plug it into a monitor right? been using mine for a week or so now and don't really feel the need for any thing, except maybe a screen protector. which might be a waste since I can never put them on right

      Anonymous

Get JSAUX screen protector. It comes with a plastic screen that you put on the steam deck and then you put the screen protector into the plastic fitting. It's impossible to frick up placing the screen protector correctly that way.

Other than that I also bought a dock because then your deck is literally a mini pc and once you have greater setups you want to do you can connect mouse, keyboard, lan cable, and a big screen to do it comfortably.

One thing I never liked about consoles, especially the x86 ones, is that you couldn't recycle them into working computers once they were obsolete. I'm glad you can finally do this with these handhelds. Having an extra computer around is always useful.

I have a DS, 3DS, PSP and PS VITA and they are all slowly dying. General handhelds like the deck allow me to keep playing these consoles without worrying about these old ass consoles keeping on working. Though to be fair, DS games are only enjoyable on DS.

Frick modern consoles to the pits of hell, worthless locked down pieces of anticonsumer shit that should have died 10 years ago when Snoy/Microshart went for digital licenses and half baked releases. Once UMPCs become good enough to run AAA games at medium settings (like 9th gen slop), there will be no reason to own a console when software like Steam Big Picture make games one click to play on the couch.

make better games and consumers won’t just want to emulate old ones
make better hardware and consumers will buy your hardware instead of going elsewhere
treat consumers better and they won’t just turn their nose up at you and pirate your games

this is all just a market issue, if you can’t provide better service than piracy then that’s your fault. most people are willing to spend the money but not if they’re treated like shit in return

I've always wanted to ask someone this: If there were a black wall behind your wide-screen monitor, would that bother you as much as the "black bars"? I assume the answer is no, so why do the "black bars" bother you? If a movie goes black for a moment, like if the main character got knocked out or something, do you think "ew get this black box off my screen"? When the monitor is off, do you seethe about the black on it?

Do you also look at bezels and think "oh boy I sure do love this empty space!"

i usually dont mind 4:3 but on the deck, all that empty space bothers me

I don't even notice the empty space just like I don't notice the empty space that is the wall around my TV. I think at some point you conceptualized the empty space as "lost space" and now you can't shake the claustrophobic feeling even once it's explained that it's just neutral space just like what's around your screen and you're imposing the idea of it being cramped yourself. If you could somehow forget the negativity you've associated with it and go into it again with a neutral attitude then it wouldn't bother you, but you can't shake it off because it's too set in.

              Anonymous

For me it's really more like there's so much empty space between the buttons and the game when I play a 4:3 ROM and it feels like overkill. Top/bottom bars don't bother me as much.

                Anonymous

I think "I feel like my hands are too far apart" is a rationalization of the associated negativity. Otherwise you'd have the same feeling with fullscreen games too and you'd only ever be able to stand using handhelds with square screens like the game boy.

My fair review of the deck.

The weight really is a bit too much. And you really have to tinker quite a bit with it if you want everything to run, but everything I wanted to run runs after a bit of tinkering. I owned a switch at release for maybe a year. One of the reason I sold is is because it got really loud and hot. This is not the case with the steam deck oled. Regardless what I played, the deck never got hot or loud.

And customization for every game is godly. The weight and the price are really the biggest complaints I have. The size feels close to ideal, at least the screen. The controller halves could be a little slimmer, but it's really comfortable.

  33. 4 months ago

Serious question, is there any advantage of using a Steam Deck over Stream Link and a tablet? I have a controller bigger enough to fit it

      Anonymous

Running natively, no streaming artifacts or input delay, not everything works well streaming, even with a router in the same room. Trackpads, extra buttons, controls customization, and community templates make m+kb games much more playable. Much less energy usage, can turn off your main PC as well, if you care about that kind of thing. But if all you want is to play controller games that aren't affected by delay, then stick to streaming.
