This is the best Dragon Quest

>Best party BY FAR
>Best side stories
>Perfect blend of old and new, still has random encounters in dungeons but Holy Protection makes it easy to explore the overworld.
>Best graphics (DQXI has too much post processing)
>Best romances (Yangus and Red, Hero and Princess Madea)
>Best English localization and voice acting
>Best (true) ending
Why was it so fricking good bros. It warms my heart every time I play it.

I absolutely adore the game, I'd love to replay it but I don't want to over do it and ruin it, I need to be in the right state of mind to replay it, something like having several days free in a row with no worries on my mind so I can just close myself off the world and allow the game to lower my heartbeat to submit to its hypnotic rythm.

The jump from 2D to 3D was pretty fricking massive, even if the gameplay itself remained much the same as before. But just as amazing were the sheer amount of localization perks that made DQ8 feel like a premium product, not least of all the gorgeous orchestral soundtrack.

I could have played in moon if I wanted, I've been grinding ankis for long enough to get through multiple Square RPGs with relative ease. But I chose not to, because the NTSC release of DQ8 is obviously superior:
    >Great voice acting (Sorry you were filtered by cheeky British soul)
    >Better menus
    >Orchestral music (I understand preferring the MIDI for some DQ games but DQ8's midi music is pretty abhorrent)

There's some things I like about 5, but it gives you all these options for recruiting monsters and then they're mostly useless by the end because your family is so powerful. I also really don't like the bride selection section, the storytelling there just feels so clumsy compared to almost everything else in the whole series. They should have either just given you your childhood friend to marry made the other option (or options depending on version) feel like they make sense.

5 definitely has some great things about it, but overall I think it's the weakest out of that trilogy of 4, 5 and 6.

DQ5 gets praised for the concept it presents, not really its execution, lacking as it is.
The wife "choice" for example is by far one of the most hyped up nothingburgers in the realm of RPGs. It changes nothing, your kids remain doormats and the game plays out exactly the same no matter who you pick.
The exploration was the most gimped out of the NES/SNES titles since everything is in favor of setpieces and the series never truly recovered from this even though 6 tried to rectify it somewhat.

In all of them. End game monsters learn breath attacks that do ~160 damage of all enemies for no cost. Even gen 2 monsters learn the ~70 damage breath at least.
You were gimping yourself by using the shitty children instead.

              Anonymous

I would think making your kids suck that much would make the narrative even worse. Anyway the monster thing was only one of my criticisms, the story overall isn't great and the central marriage family theme is super badly done. 4 and 6 are both much better games.

      Anonymous

V is overrated. The monster party members are lame compared to actual characters, and the marriage plot feels rushed and unfinished with how your wife gets pregnant and gives birth in the next few hours of gameplay without any sort of timeskip like how they had already previously used timeskips.

Wanted to get into this series but DQ1 on the NES left a sour taste in my mouth. Does DQ2 have the same flaws as 1 where you encounter enemies practically every single tile you move on the map, gain 1 gold per combat encounter, and spam attack/hurt spell day in and day out until you can finally progress to the next area? Or should I just skip to DQ3 on Android which is praised to hell and back in the land of the rising Sun?

You can vibe with DQ1 but you really have to force yourself to do so. I like it but it's not for everyone. DQ2 is a much bigger game, but is still grindy and lacks direction. Most people agree that 3 is the first really good one. If you want a smoother experience, play the 16-bit version.

      Anonymous

I don't remember how the encounter rate works in 1, but with 2 onwards it works so that you'll have moments when you're likely to have several fights in a row in just a few steps, alternated with moments when the game leaves you alone for a bit to let you explore. It's how it works in most DQ games from that point onward for a long time and also in most DQ clones like Mother. Talks of encounter rates in those games is one thing that taught me you can't trust most people's opinion on games, because they'll complain about having 2 fights in a row, but never mention or even realize when the game lets them walk around for more than a screen's worth with no encounter. They're either only capable of seeing the glass half full, or only capable to assume everything works like Final Fantasy and when they get no encounter they're being "lucky" without realizing it's per design.
Anyway combats in DQ2 are a lot more interesting than in 1 since there are multiple party members, multiple enemies, and a lot more options. You should play DQ2 because it's THE game that started DQ mania and basically started the jRPG genre, and if you check Japanese sites everyone acknowledges that, DQ1 didn't do that, and most copies of 1 were sold after 2 and 3. The meme opinion that 2 is supposed to be bad is entirely western.
But if when playing it and after 10 hours you still think the combat is a flaw, you should stop playing the series, especially the early games. In 2,3 and 4 the random encounters ARE the game. Those games don't even have the Final Fantasy standard of "one dungeon -> one boss at the time", most of the dungeons don't have a boss, and half of the bosses don't occur at the end of a dungeon. You need to drop the 16-32bit jRPG mentality consisting of meaningless random encounters and only the boss at the end of a dungeon matters, in 8-bit RPGs the random encounters are the game.

        Anonymous

Yeah, 2 is pretty enjoyable in comparison. Different tiles(plains, forests, mountains) actually having different encounter rates is pretty nice. Couldn't tell the difference in the NES version at all and assumed it was bugged. Also, I'm impressed with the companion system. They're pretty smart with their target choice. If the player has a higher damage output than their companion, they'll prioritize eliminating a previously wounded enemy and leave him to one shot the next mob. They also follow through for you if you can't manage to 1HKO a mob. There's more resource management too, brighter caves so I can easily map them out, and early access to Holy Water - which is a relief. I can finally walk around the overworld and chart out notable landmarks and get to a dungeon without having to deal with 5 encounters every 3 tiles with the occassional 5 second break before the next 3 encounters in a row. It's really impressive how the sequel actually managed to make the game substantially better and not worse. I'm having high expectations for the rest of the series now.
Also, that princess art is adorable. Glad I'll be getting her in my party soon.

      >DQ1 on the NES left a sour taste in my mouth
Damn you fricking suck kid, it's not that hard. Just grind up for an hour then mow everything else in the game like it's nothing.

      >you encounter enemies practically every single tile you move on the map, gain 1 gold per combat encounter
DQ1's RNG rolls only work on real hardware, specifically the game's speed which on an actual NES would be running on its oddball 60+ FPS framerate. Playing on emulator or clone console causes the calculations to frick up and make everything worse. You can look it up for yourself.

        Anonymous

Just got back from clearing the SNES version of DQ1, was pretty mediocre. DQ2's looking much more hopeful, but not much better. Least you actually get Holy Water early and have a chance at actually exploring the world.

What does not wanting to waste my time killing the same pitiable enemies for hours have anything to do with being bad at the game? In the first place, grinding is inherently a bad thing. I wanted to dungeon crawl, map out the winding corridors of a labyrinth, have fights with formidable opponents, and then escape at the brink of death or fail and perish as I watch the Dragon lord take over the world.
What I got was sitting outside of Rimuldar grinding until I got everything minus the magic armour, slave away for more XP around Damdara until I could make it to Cantlin, get the rest of the strongest loot in the game, then grind up to 20 before the Dragon Lord fight where the tactic is to spam attack and Healmore until he dies.
Ignoring the grind, there are moronic design decisions like magic keys and locking Holy Water behind a magic door. I've already gotten repel at that point, why would I ever stock up on Holy Water? Then there're enemies with CC spells like sleep, which can stunlock you until you're dead, which isn't too bad since you get Spellstop early on, but then you get an enemy that has an opening attack and can just cast sleep before you have the chance to do anything. The only notably good thing about the game is the adventure, and how nice it makes you feel for rescuing a cute princess and being hailed as a hero, but that's pretty much it. Was worth playing to get a good grasp to see how the series started though.

Also all the shit in the final chapter about hopelessness and accelerationism was pure kino.

I love 8, but everything it does, I feel like 11 does better. Especially as I've gotten older and I enjoy wasting time more, backtracking, and talking to npcs obsessively; 11's NPCs were fantastic, especially if you keep up with them all late into the game when the timeline splits.

too grindy with a fricked balance
an encounter that can wipe your party if you're not careful barely gives you more XP than one that's impossible to lose

sounds like a skill issue to me

I always have to laugh when anyone calls a post-NES Dragon Quest "grindy" though. I've never had to grind in a single one. If I did, it was by choice just to get a new ability or something.

That's because they don't know the definition of the word and consider having 2 fights in a row while going through a dungeon "grinding". You see that "revisionism" thread in which 90% of all the responses are "this is revisionism because the opinion on the game changed"?
People don't know the meaning of the words they use and will sooner post 300 posts debating on the subject than learning what the subject really is.

I suppose. I think part of the issue is that "when to grind" is entirely up to the player to decide, and everyone has a different metric. I know people who think they "need to grind" as soon as they can't kill enemies with a single regular attack. Some people feel like they need to heal completely after every battle, which wears down on resources, so they think they need to grind.

I'm playing through the series in release order and I swear to fricking Christ I'm about to quit DQVI. I just got to the flying bed and this entire game is so goddamn slow and boring it's unreal. I-V were all great, each felt unique and was a ton of fun, VI is just III but worse with the most boring storyline and the dullest characters I've ever seen in a game.

Just take a break. VI and VII are commonly cited as being more tedious than the rest, and you're not doing them any favors by tiring yourself out on five consecutive DQs.

Thing is I enjoyed the other ones, I'd beat one and jump right into the next all excited. I'm at least a third through this one and wondering when literally ANYTHING is going to happen.

The first five are relatively quick games for JRPGs. VI and VII is when they start ballooning into 80-100 hour affairs. Trust me, this is the single best place to take a break.

I've played every game in the franchise and VI/VII were the only points that I burned out. I'd go as far as to say that you should skip them and come back to them later, especially because the last three entries in the series (not counting X) are all very good.

I wouldn't call the wannabe MMORPG that is DQ9 "good" on any level.

DQ9 is an entirely standalone game, the wifi shit only comes into play in the postgame. It's also the closest game design-wise to 3.

Almost the entire game is post-game. The story is mostly just a formality to prepare you for it, and it doesn't help that a lot of the features needed to stand any chance in post-game require wi-fi.

No, the main story is around 60 hours. You're just a narrative spinning israelite.

                >the main story is around 60 hours
Maybe if you suck. A decent player shouldn't need more than 30 tops to kill Corvus.

That was actually a typo. It's 50, rounded up from howlongtobeat's 48 average.

Which seems extremely generous. I just looked at my file with 57 hours, and I didn't grind at all outside of a few endgame abilities.

Those are the two best games. I always recommend starting with them so you don't lose interest by how crappy 1-5 are in comparison.

Nice LARP but anyone who's dragged themselves through DQII would never ever call anything else in the series slow or boring.

DQII wasn't bad except for the stair maze near the end and the fricking oneshotting enemies, but at least they give you a free res priest right outside the last dungeon. DQVI isn't hard, it's just fricking boring.

Yes, DQ6 is stagnant. It was the first time a new mainline DQ game didn't have a new major feature and instead focused on the amount of content it offered. I also feel like the main driving forces behind the game didn't care about this title as much as they did before and instead focused their energy on other things like Chrono Trigger.

With that said the gameplay is tons of fun in the 2nd half of the game. You can learn a lot of cool skills and there is actually a hidden super boss that makes you use those skills.

      > Playing on emulator or clone console causes the calculations to frick up and make everything worse

Every decent NES emulator can emulate randomized RAM on startup

Playing the series in order is one of the worst ideas. It's pretty much a bad idea with any series but especially DQ, the games are just way too slow, boring and samey. Anyone who has actually done it must have attained true enlightenment and is in tune with rhythm of the universe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO_xh7xIabk

How are people in Japan regarding different versions of dorakue games? As autistic and console warry as the west? Anyone read any 2ch dorakue threads?

I really don't know about opinion on version differences, but you also have to remember you're on /vr/. The average DQ player probably uses "the latest version", be that on DS, 3DS, or "HD remaster" or mobile bullshit; regardless of whether they're in the west or in Japan.

What I know however is that the opinion of DQ1 and 2 are completely different. Over there they acknowledge that it's DQ2 that started DQ mania and is basically referred to as the start of jRPGs, while the western canon is to pretend that DQ1 invented jRPGs and 2 is a meaningless unbalanced POS you should avoid playing. They also don't know, don't care, about the improvements of the western versions and will consider the SNES version of 2 the first time there is the new intro and the first time you can save in the game even though that comes from the NES version. We have romhacks that revert the localized things, but I've never heard of Japanese romhacks that add the improvements and bugfixes of the western versions to the Famicom versions.
