it can't be the modern super metroid because super metroid is a legendary title that codified an entire genre and did things that were completely unheard of for its time, hollow knight is simply another derivative if very polished and high quality game

I'd say that calling it the "modern super metroid" is pretty fair, to be honest. It does almost everything Super did, with its own unique flavour inspired by other things as well, and wrapped it all up in an absolutely beautiful arts type with equally fantastic music and challenging gameplay.
Nothing will ever overtake Super Metroid, but I'd say HK is just about equal. Just about. Not quite.

Super Metroid was the only game really, that took you on detours, where you obtained a new ability, and then shortcuts back to a previous area, the shortcut most likely requiring that new ability to use, and goes right back to where you just were. Prime 2 is the only other one off the top of my head that does this in the series. I consider it to be more pivotal than sequence breaking by far.

        Anonymous

Hollow Knight does this all the time too. It's just less on the nose, and less about new abilities strictly, and shortcuts can be more hidden. Just depends. City of Rain for example has a shortcut back to the boss fight that most people don't realize. Don't get me wrong, I love Super Metroid, and it's in my top 10 games. But hollow knights map is just so complicated and interconnected, it has micro shortcuts and macro shortcuts, multiple different routes, entrances and exits that can bring you back to place you know, or send you someplace that feels unknown, and it feels even more like being truly lost, because you don't get a map as soon as you enter an area. Not only do you have to find it, but have to sit on a bench to update it. It's genius honestly, and not enough people even understand hollow knight enough to realize that. It's just considered "That generic uninspired metroidvania that's kinda hard and like dark souls I guess" I loved it so much because of how much it genuinely reminded me of Super Metroid (I literally played HK right after SM) and how much it felt like an evolution of it.

To me. The only thing SM does that HK doesn't, is the uhhh how do I put this..."random destructible blocks"? My memory is vague, but whatever it is. I know it made individual rooms and levels feel more like puzzles, than pure exploration, and I really liked that about SM, but Hollow Knight mogs it in every other regard.

          Anonymous

To be fair the secret movement tech in SM is pretry damn good. Only Rabi-Ribi matches that.

HK only has the pogo and shade for sequence break. Admittedly, they're still great to pull off.

what's the problem? the first time I saw this webm circulating on Ganker I thought it was some ego stroking of how "easy" some Gankertard decided the boss fight is. But that's not the vibe I get from this comment, and it doesn't jive with my experience anyway. I think the boss fight is pretty good. It's like a perfect and simple expression of the developers awareness of the limits and foundations of the movement and combat. I can't remember it as one of my favourite boss fights, but I don't see a particular problem with it. I just realized after a second time looking at this webm, that the dude playing is obviously pretty decent and you can make any boss fight look stupid easy by just finding a video of some speedrunner or challenge runner fighting a boss.

        >It's like a perfect and simple expression of the developers awareness of the limits and foundations of the movement and combat
Markoth is completely RNG from start to finish, so no matter if you're evading or attacking you're always on edge especially on radiant. It took me possibly around like 40-50 attempts before I recorded this webm. I don't think that a game forcing you to constantly adapt or react to stuff as opposed to learning patterns, especially in a 2d platformer, is good design. Thankfully Markoth is the only instance of this in the game, webm related, pure vessel is a better boss fight. Anyway Radiant difficulty is supposed to be hard
        >I thought it was some ego stroking of how "easy" some Gankertard decided the boss fight is.
I'm just attention whoring posting webms of me playing the game to try and create discussion since I'm playing Hollow Knight and having fun. I'm fricking bad at this game as other anons have pointed out to me

          >I'm fricking bad at this game as other anons have pointed out to me

No worries bro. I misinterpreted. I prefer and honest and humble moron to an ego stroking one. I'm bad at the game too, I haven't even attempted radianr difficulty (haven't been able to play HK in a while cuz it's on my broke. switch) so, respect for that.

On the matter of your criticism...hmmm "RNG". I wouldn't exactly put it like that, but I can totally see what you mean. This fight incorporates the actual platforming aspect of the game a lot more, which a lot of boss fights do actually, but not enough, especially compared to the more popular ones. That's why I almost want to excuse it. It may not be properly balanced or fair, but it's a change of pace, that turns your head on how to engage with an enemy, incorporating movement and verticality a lot more.

            Anonymous

Yeah I understand your angle for the platforming parts. Markoth and Absolute Radiance do force you to be cognizant of your environment and require you to be tight with your jumps, but they still are very frustrating. One section in the game I think managed to do a good mix of combat and platforming was the trial of the fools. Now THAT was intense and fun. Granted the atmosphere of the area with the crowd cheering and the music in the background carry this segment a lot, but frantically pogoing off enemies heads avoiding attacks (predictable, but still needing you to be fast) coming from all directions was fun and more rewarding than Markoth.

              >One section in the game I think managed to do a good mix of combat and platforming was the trial of the fools.

completely agree. hollow knight made me love things that I tend to hate in other games. like the whole "arena fight" kind of thing (and collectibles) I deliberately went back to the trial of fools because it was just so fun. games combat is genuinely so underappreciated on here.

I get it though. It can be frustrating, stupidly frustrating with the bosses tho.

I never liked using nail arts, they make me feel exposed especially in the air.
I had to force myself to use spells to begin with and if it wasn't for someone here telling me that I could upgrade the projectile or the scream I would never have realized. I thought spells turned black on the rare videos I saw of the game because of a charm you had to equip kek

I hate Hollow Knight as a Metroidvania. You'll spend the first 70% of the game visiting areas without reaching their end, all because you got to a roadblock that requires getting an upgrade in the opposite side of the map. They went out of their way to make it as much of a chore as possible. Dash upgrade at the top of the map (crystal peaks), then the double jump upgrade in the bottom of the map, and so on.

Also, most boss fights are really easy except those you're not meant to do early, but the game gives you no indication of this whatsoever. Lost Vessel is my biggest problem with this. He is a mandatory encounter on the way out of the double jump upgrade, how are you supposed to know you're not meant to fight him? I wasted a lot of time, stunned him dozens of times and finally accepted that I just don't have the upgrades necessary at the time being.

In short, the game is carried by everything EXCEPT its Metroidvania elements. If it didn't have charming visuals, sound and designs it would unanimously be an awful game.

I dislike how none of the bosses really react to you beyond aiming scripted attacks at you. They don't react to getting hit beyond their scripted staggers, and only a handful of fights have different attacks based on your position.
