No joke but if you legitimately praise 7R for anything other than having a decent idea for a combat system then you're beyond moronic. How someone can think a "remake" that's literally just the intro of the actual game, filled with pointless crap to pad the length, and then with an added fate ghost plot that tells you the rest of them are just going to be alternate timeline moronation, is good is beyond me. Imagine if for RE4 remake they just padded out the village and added some multiverse crap to the story.
It's because FF7 wasn't my first Final Fantasy, I'm not as nostalgic for it as other FFs. FF1 on NES then FF2(4) on SNES.
Now, if they "remade" FF4 and completely changed the story or messed up characterization, I'd be infuriated, so yeah, I get the anger over 7 Remake. As an example, I absolutely loathe the existence of FF4: After Years, and don't consider it canon. It's a shit episodic mobile game by a completely different team that misses the spirit of the original.
I found 7R's changes interesting enough to keep me engaged, and I want to see where this goes. It's not like I think it was perfect by any means, the time jannies were incredibly poorly done, but the overall premise is one I'm willing to watch. It probably helps that 7 already had a shit ton of anthology things that were absolute shit, so having a new game that at LEAST got the characterization of the characters correct (or slightly changed to be better) was nice.
I just feel that taking a remake of a single game and chopping it up into 3 separate releases years apart is bad enough, the dumb timeline shit is just icing on the cake. Moreover the fact that they got rid of the more directed camera angles in favor of a very generic behind the back camera. Also the music rearrangements are very hit or miss.
I love the combat and character moments, so I actually like the idea of having more games to enjoy those in (since FF typically abandons that stuff from game to game), but I 100% get not liking it. It will feel like an incomplete experience for a lot of people and unable to be taken as its own thing. I actually think it's going to hurt Square over the long term as they lose people with each game, but I'm glad for purely selfish reasons.
Timeline stuff I'm okay with because that's been in FF since the first game, but it does make it easier for them to completely frick it up (we don't know how they'll use it in the next two games) as it's incredibly easy to do time travel/multiple existences shit piss poorly. From what we saw in their OTHER 7 anthology stuff, this team can 100% make complete and utter shit so it's a completely valid concern that they'll mess it up.
The music-thing I find very interesting, I actually think it's the one incredibly solid part of the Remake. The ONLY points where the music didn't necessarily work for me was near the end, the new pieces that felt super different than a Uematsu sound if that makes any sense. It was kind of distracting.

but there are character moments that FF7R completely ruins. Aerith's intro is ruined by time ghosts. The plate falling and killing all of sector 7 is now retconned. Instead of Biggs Wedge and Jessie being killed by a massive plate dropping on them, Wedge survives the plate drop and get whisked off by time ghosts or something, Biggs survives, and Jessie maybe/maybe not dies because a grenade blew up in her face. Also all of the sector 7 civilians survived because they evacuated. The Avalanche meeting with cloud in the room below the pinball machine doesn't happen. Hojo spoils the twist. The scene with the party finding president Shinra dead is ruined. Sephiroth is no longer OG sephiroth but Advent Children Sephiroth who seems like he's in love with Cloud.
I felt Biggs/Wedge/Jessie moments were strengthened because they were barely characters in the OG and we got to spend so much more time with them. It was just a "they died, that sucks" moment during that sequence. The plate falling was still catostrophic and killed a lot of people, just supposedly less than before, and Barret's moment after was done well. I'd actually say Barret was improved all across the board in Remake, they nailed him. Aerith felt flat in a lot of places, though.
I do miss the Avalanche meeting in the secret room, but the game had so much more room to let all the characters breathe and interact with each other. The Aerith/Cloud moment on the rooftops had more back and forth, we get a bit more into Tifa's feelings over Nibelheim and Shinra that didn't really get touched on enough (and hopefully is expanded more in following games).
The Sephiroth-thing entirely hinges on whether you're onboard the premise of the the Remake-games or not, it doesn't completely change the overall feel of him (though the original version of "him" via Jenova illusions is still happening), but like I said I'm onboard with seeing where it goes.

The combat is a rip off of Nioh, itself being a more RPG-focused version of Souls.
It's a straight 1:1 rip off of something derivative, with random elements from DMC thrown in for no apparent reason.
It's probably not unpleasant to play for most people, but ripping off a bunch of other things and mashing them together can only lead to something mediocre, and mediocre isn't what people expect from a FF mainline game. There was a time before XIII, XIV and XV where people actually expected to fire up a FF game and be blown away and remain obsessed with it for the next 3 years.
"Nioh May Cry 2.8: A Song of gays and Fortnite" really isn't doing that for me.
And it really pains me to say it too, because I've been praying for a Vagrant Story 2 for a very long time, and then it comes out and it's this garbage.
The actual VS on PSX has better gameplay, and despite half the men having their asscheeks hanging out it manages to be less gay.

ESL can't extrapolate that FF7R has a battle system that doesn't deviate from the traditional FF's to the point of being a genre change. It sells well, it clearly does a better job. It clearly undermines your "argument" which was actually just a shit opinion and not an argument.
I absolutely hate FFVII:R and it has ripped my heart out when it revealed itself as a spin-off and not a remake, but the combat was very good.
Sadly it's badly balanced and the boss fights break too easily before the post game, if you engage with side content at all, but that's as far as you can get from turn based while still being turn based.
It's a perfect mash of the 2 systems, just wish it wasn't stuck with such a shit game. Fricking 2 hours in a grey sewer chasing a goblin for Not-Noctis. Still hurts man...
I didn't like the time jannie bait and switch either anon, but I've made my peace with it since it the battle system was such fun and it was comfy just being back in FF7s world. I find it better to just think of it as a FF7 theme park ride rather than anything serious.

Im like 8 hours in and just got the wind powers. The game feels disconnected. First of all no sense of adventure because its not an open world game. The game is played in levels which is ridiculous and ruins most of the game. Why would a mainline Final Fantasy be played in levels this isnt 2002. Strangers in Paradise did this which was stupid but acceptable only because it was a side game.
Second no true party members yet? And seems like the whole game will just be a one character story which is lame.
Overall FF15 was the superior game. It was open world and it had a more entertaining and engaging story and characters.
Ff16 seems like it lost all steam after the 2 hour demo. Ill keep playing and hoping it gets better.
Sidenote-too many of the characters look the same, i have no idea if that blonde wind girl was the MC mother and the lady who had sexs with Hugo. It's confusing.

I liked FF16 but I thought FF15 was trash, I tried multiple times to finish it and i get bored from the bad combat.
From a story only perspective, I'd say that XV feels like FF shoehorned into a modern setting, while XVI just does not feel like FF at all.

Honestly if they just fixed the fricking combat it'd be alright. Maybe not up there with the best, but an ok entry in the series.
XVI just doesn't belong, it's made specifically to not belong and to be a cut-away title for the series into a new era, that's recounted in the trailer and YoshiP has said so himself in basically every interview.

Of course I know Ganker think review bombing isn't real but all you have to do is reach a lot of these reviews and see that they contain blatantly incorrect information. Probably because they're borrowing talking points to rush out an opinion. One of the "most helpful" ones says you can hold square to attack and that the maps are ff13 hallways for example.

FF16 doesn't have a post game. It has a NG+ that just replays the story and swaps out some bosses and enemies for classic FF ones. There's also no superbosses at all. It's the most barebones FF in terms of endgame stuff.

You don't need to spam them. If you don't really want to learn how to use Torgal a rule of thumb is to tap Sic at the end of every complete melee combo you do. Especially if you get the magic burst. It's a combo extender or a finisher depending, and you'll get points either way.
So just square square square dog every time until he's maxed out. It's not his most optimal use but it's a very easy rule of thumb to follow.

Torgal actually has less damage output if you use the automated accessory so it's still a trade off between training wheels and optimization.

It's kinda like XIII and XIV where it's a really interesting base concept for the setting, and then the execution just falls off a cliff.
The original Tactics already did the "Frankist israeli sect secretly controlling the world by getting possessed by demiurges" plot really well, which is probably why XIV abandoned it after Stormblood ended, but that doesn't mean you can just slack on the story like this.

I'm 20ish hours in and only problem with it so far is how easy NG is. I understand Final Fantasy mode is balanced around a high level and all your skills unlocked, but the game is 50 hours long so having to replay it for a decent challenge is a real drag.

I'm loving the game, but I have a HUGE problem with the MMO-style "monster position resets" that happens when you accidentally take a monster outside of a specific range when just naturally fighting the monster. I've had a few times where the monster would be taken too far, then have its health reset and it goes to a starting position.
Now THAT is actual shit design that shouldn't be in a single-player game with large zones. If you DO want something to return to a zone, don't insta-full heal it and make it invulnerable, it's completely immersion-breaking.

It doesn't happen a LOT or anything, but it's definitely happened a number of times with me against tough enemies with a stagger bar. I do a shit ton of moving around during higher HP enemy fights, though, so maybe less people encounter that issue than me.

I don't know much about that since I never watched GOT (and know nothing about it), but yes, Jill is literally transparent during the rest of the game, which make no sense since she is just not some random waifu, but actually a Shiva dominant. At least, she should get as much if not more valuable screen time and exposition than Benedickta.
When i saw "no party members" i believed they would explore the dominants a lot more. But even Jill, who is with you at all times, only gets content that a minor party member would get in a traditional jrpg. It's really disappointing.
Indeed, when you compare this to FF9 / Grandia 2 / FFX etc... it's night and day really.
FFX had a whole party and it still was able to develop yuna a lot. Jill has insane potential but 70% of her dialogue is about how she's sad by the fact she had to kill people before.
This, I mean Garnet is a good counter example, she "evolve" during the game (when she start to cut her hair), so not only you start to know her more and more, she also get more confident in herself etc..
Same thing with FFX, the more you know about the world of Spira, the more you know about Yuna, and the more you pass time with her, the more you understand the difficulties that she is facing.
None of that with Jill, she is just a companion, nothing more.

But joke aside, I would make a real "Fantasy" game, I would want the player to be in awe when they discover a new city like in FF9 with Lindblum, to watch a super Kino intro like FF8 with Liberi Fatali, and have a good story where each characters feel connected to each others like FFX.
Add to that some FF12 lore and world building and then drop some Yoko Kanno / Sakimoto / Hamauzu soundtrack and voila.
It would be KINO. The devil's in the details of course, and I won't presume to place such a burden on you. All I will say is that if you do it, many will be appreciative.

One day maybe, who know.... I do make mods, ports and extension for games already, so if one day I could climb high enough to be able to works on some of their IP (even if it's a remaster), I won't hesitate to make a "Sonic Mania" out of it.
It's what I think too, most of the FF with this type of system did have a very good characters narration, thanks to the gameplay and story mixing together.
In "my" FF, I would give access to a ship right from beginning, with a party members and then, extra members (to manage your ship, in a Star Trek style), this ship will be your home and you would be able to customize it and upgrade it during the whole game, of course, you will also need to look for NPC to become a crew member of the ship (a bit like FFX Blitzball and MGSV) etc...

Then each members of the party have specific classes and sub classes that you can unlock over time with small crystal (Grandia 2 style ?).

I feel like they should try going back to the class system. I feel like watching the characters develop slightly along a path you set them on over the course of the game is a forgotten favorite part of the franchise. The MMOs have and people seem to love it there, so why can't the modern mainline FFs have it?

This issue isn't limited to XVI but I really wish character writers in games would inject some humanity into characters APART from their ideologies and traumas. Yknow small stuff like

Most of her dialogue between her and clive (so far) is summed up to: we're monsters, we're doing the right thing, we will do it together, i'm with you. I think there's a disappointing lack of small character moments which could really endear her to players and make her more "real".
they did it quite well for other characters like Byron who is not just "Clive's uncle" but also a fatass who loves his food, is too rich for his own good and a moron with his money, loves theatre, loves his country but is too cowardly to take over so he resorts to begging clive and funding an impoverished militia to do it. Just way more interesting and colorful than Jill.
AFAIK Jill has been locked up in the Iron Kingdom for like 13 years so there could be so much room for character moments like her trying the region's cuisine, etc

This is why party members are essential in these types of games. Make Clive interact with 4-5 different people. It brings new dynamics to the game.

It's hilarious to me how even a B team game like Monster Hunter Rise has more interraction and better AI with it's tacked on follower system (they all have a unique reaction and dialgoue to your emotes etc) than a AAA game from a series that was always well known for it's colourful party members.
I prefer having a battle system with actual party members like 7R but i also like 16's.
My biggest problem is how they traded party members and character interactions for...nothing.
I felt like this wasnt converted in anything favorable for this game.

They are constantly removing any character that could fill these places, like cid or gav.

That's what's rubbing me the wrong way about XVI overall. It's another case of Squeenix absolutely wasting something that had incredible potential.
This would make the structure they have even worse. Jill is already a ghost in most quests, no agency at all. Imagine if you had 4-5 people there. It would be schizo: the game.
I'd like to think even Squeenix aren't so moronic that they'd overlook how schizo it is to have a full party of ghosts, but I'm sure they'd prove me wrong. They have all these characters and set pieces in place to make what could have been the best FF game and they just... didn't. It's frustrating.

True, it seems people forget just how much of FFXIV's story is facemeltingly boring. Especially those that only joined during the ShB hypetrain. It's actually surprising they were even put on a mainline title when they've never even made an expansion that had a great story from start to finish. All the best shit came in later patches.

No story would ever satisfy zoomers who think every story should be a constant buildup to the next climax. I'd ask you to name a single story that doesn't have lulls in the narrative to setup the next setpiece. The culmination of ShB was all the boring bits and cool bits coming together for that last 5 minute cutscene.
If I think back on every jrpg I've ever played, there are none that could or should ever engage me for 50+ hours of gameplay, it's simply not possible when even in regular non-rpg games, they fail to engage you for much less amount of time.
There's lulls in narrative to setup the next story beat, but FF14 is just plain terrible at it. It's always something boring and menial as frick and the sense of that only increases in as your WoL accomplishes greater and greater feats over the expansions.
They did as well as they could in an MMO anon. Do a thought experiment and think about what you would put in between those story beats, how that translates to gameplay, to the leveling experience.
In XVI, yes they could have done way better considering it's a single player game but XIV is very limited by it's genre and expectations of "number go up." As the story progresses, the writers have to really fricking dig to find a reason as to why the game just doesn't even with a black screen and "And then the WoL killed every dangerous god on Etherys: The End" because of its MMO nature. Writing for XIV is monumentally harder than XVI is, as of now.
The writers were unable to understand why characters like Cersei or Catelyn were interesting and as a result their FF16 expy equivalents are killed off unceremoniously. Meanwhile Jill is just a wet blanket because they had no GoT equivalent to copy from.
I like jill but i think this is true. The fact she gets almost nothing when she's in the game just as much as clive is insane. I feel like Barret in 7R just in the first part of the story got a bigger story arc than Jill.

All the Ivalice games aside from TA and TA2 are cursed by the fact that their stories revolve around geopolitics+magic instead of personal drama+magic.
It is a niche story genre, people are much more easily swept into a love story than an international conflict over magical nukes that constantly has its balance of power redressed by magic being unpredictable.
XII tried to make it a little easier on people by presenting itself as Star Wars for the first act, before slowly starting to turn into FF Tactics, and a lot of people dropped it once the court intrigue and political speeches started rolling in.
There's also a lot, and I mean A LOT, of resentment around media that portrays politics mostly neutrally, without openly virtue signaling for one side.
Political people will just be pissed off no matter which side they're on.
That's probably why XVI went the GoT route and isn't officially an Ivalice game, politics are too saturated right now to deliver a story like that, it would just be blown to bits by basically everybody.
People can say whatever they want about XII but I adamantly believe this is top 3 when it comes to FF soundtracks. Like it doesn't have the GOAT final boss themes like some others but its consistently really good across the board. I can still remember some random field or town themes.

My main concern after 17 hours (I think), is that I would have liked to control party members, different enemies reacting different on elements and perhaps its own fault for doing all the side quest (which are really short) but the pacing is kind of off sometimes.
I do enjoy how it doesnt feel like Im wasting time like I did when I played Tears of the Kingdom (not to start a thibg here). I always feel motivated by in game reasons to move forward.

It's DMC but no scoring system, main character isn't as fun as Nero, enemies are a joke and there are Kaiju boss fights that are basically QTE prompts. Wait for a sale and a patch/mod that adds in hard mode without having to clear the game.

You get zero good loot. There's no reason to ever take even a single step away from going directly to your quest location. Performance in certain areas is legit 22fps on graphics mode. Motion blur is obnoxious. The actual world is ok but there's nothing to ever stop to look at because there's no reason to.
There is zero reason to ever grind a single mob you can run past them with no penalty and levels scale so everything feels the same levels of easy. Apart from the first 4 hours of the game there's zero reason to ever talk to the merchants because they have fricking NOTHING EVER. Wow you travelled to a brand new location here's a merchant wow less stuff than is what is at the base you can get anytime.
Seriously i was happy playing for the first 8 or so hours and enjoying it but then all these things grinded me down so much they are impossible to over look

My current progress, I didn't encounter a single issue that would make me truly hate the story. Bad moments are a slog but they are nothing compared to mind boggling slog fest that was 13 and 8 story.
Wish they cut out all the side quests that don't flesh out characters in the world/give you upgrades.
Quality mode is stable as frick, wonder what happened with performance mode, probably shitty upscaler like AMD one or some shit.
Hunt Board is fricking great, hope they have more S rank monsters, they are a genuine challenge.
Eikon battles are a real highlight, QTEs only happen between phase changes and holy frick that Bahamut fight and OST.
Combat is alright, wish they told me I could master skills to assign them to different eikons earlier.
I really liked the focus on the eikons and love seeing their designs and animations well-fleshed out really.
But it's the little things like the Bahamut vessel being a gay or the cool Titan chad being a cuck or the fricking weird alien sex dynamic with the blonde girl (feels borderline demonic). And alot of boring cutscenes. Some pretty badass and amazing though. Whats the general ranking of the Eikons based on the skills they give you? Just got Ramuh and so far, Im a bit disappointed.
Any Eikon that has a parry ability is great imo (eg Heatwave)

My biggest criticism at the moment is the pace in which you get eikon powers. Holy hell it feels like I'm almost at the end and I'm still missing shiva, odin and bahamut, You spend so much time with just phoenix and garuda.
I really wanted to see if you could get a battlemage playstyle going with shiva + bahamut + ramuh. New game+ I guess but still sucks.

The full ending has the same issue a lot of stuff trying to be dark or gritty does in that they can't just let the ending be more hopeful. It's always killing off almost everyone and all the magic goes away if it was a magical setting.

I like the combat a lot, actually. And the voice acting is generally very good. Every other aspect of the game middle of the road. Not bad, but I doubt I'll remember much of this game a year from now.
