Load up Pogo with Special Attack boosting stuff and spam Poke Bind. If Poke Bind ever decides to hit and stick paralysis, follow up with Sleep Trick and hope it sticks sleep so Pogo can Poke Bind again.

Gori's on fire cleanup duty with Poop Toss and uses the Fertility Idol for stat boosts if there's ever an opening.

Not that anon, but I got the Cola Bottle after about 10 tries at level 16. Right about that level Pogo learns Big Bang Boom which hits 7 times and easily does almost 600 damage if it all hits.

I started the battles by immediately using the Fertility Charm with Pogo to boost stats (it's a craftable item that I made by accident), and then having Gori throw poop to set up poison tiles.

The second the mammoth starts moving towards you, start spamming Poke Bind until it stuns. If it stuns, you can get a guaranteed near 700ish damage via Pogo's Big Bang Boom + Gori's Chest Drum (whatever it was called).

Just know that after they both attack once the mammoth will likely no longer be paralyzed so you'll have to start spamming Poke Bind again.

Besides that, just spam heals with the Fertility Charm/Huge Haunch of Meat with Gori and/or use the poop throw to immediately remove any lava tiles the mammoth may be standing on. Honestly, it's not that bad of a fight once you get this down to a T.

Yeah, the combat was VERY good when the game first released, lots of depth despite being easy overall, but there's really no other games like it. Well except Touhou a Live.

WTF are those stats? Did the remake change the battle mechanics? I remember the original game had Power, Speed, Vitality, and IQ. Way more soulful than generic 'physical attack', 'physical defense', etc

I'm surprised just how good the VA work is. The JP cast goes without saying, but I'm doing my first run fully in English mainly because I don't want to get blindsided by EN Akira in the Finale and pretty much everybody sounds exactly like I thought they sounded in my head. My genuinely biggest complaint, aside from them fricking up Pogo's first word, was Oersted having lines during combat in his chapter. I LOVE the combat lines in the game, but Oersted should've been full silent hero, combat and all. That's really the only thing that bothered me. Straybow's VA is fricking phenomenal, sells the olde english shtick well, same with Hash and Uranus. Damn, I really fricking love this game.

        Anonymous

I played it on jp from start to finish simply because there is just too many VA's that I like, but I haven't heard any bad things about the English dub, at least not the Seiken 3 levels. That ghost thing is still hilarious.

        Anonymous

Honestly I don't mind Oersted having battle lines, since a lot of JRPGs give silent protags those anyways.

          Anonymous

That's fair. I'm just spoiled from the OG where when Oersted starts talking, it's the first time you hear ANYTHING from him, which is attributable to no VA. I think it works better that way myself, but that is definite bias. At least he doesn't have a level up quote, that's nice.

Yeah, actually. That's what I was thinking of. A mix of Classic DQ Hero and Link, that's what I always equated him with. Him having a voice isn't really the twist, it's when and how he decides to use it that's important. Hearing him shout "For Lucrece!" while slaughtering their soldiers is a bit silly.

the whole story was well made and the moment the Steel Titan is activated is pure hype. which only gets bigger the moment you finally start controlling it and laying waste to the military. and the fact that Akira is voiced by Shin Koji's VA makes it all the better.

      Anonymous

there is some shit like literally translating amigo to friend
my biggest gripe is however the fact that Pogo's one line is not fricking love. like man.
I remember somebody pointing out how pogo's chapter is in a way parallel yours typical knight shenanigans. find a girl, she get skidnapped, you go out to save her and beat up some evil dragon (it's a t-rex in this case but you get it).
kinda like oersted, except pogo does not get absolutely fricked and instead gets a happy ending.
so the fact that what is clearly him saying l-love as his first word is important.
especially consider the speeches to oersted are slightly different in the remake. since pogo just learned language, he doesn't really have a speech. like in the original he says his line... but unlike in the original, he then HUGS oersted. which is just... holy frick, really sweet of pogo and not gonna lie, made me shed a tear.

No order. All the stories are completely separate until the final chapter.

There is no set in stone progression. Though I'd recommend some before others. Example, Modern Day is a bad starter because it basically needs you to have a understanding of the combat before you do anything. Weirdly enough with the token order though, it paints this picture.
      >Prehistory
      >Distant Future
      >Imperial China
      >The Wild West
      >Present Day

I'll be honest, a lot of the SNES games that have reached "cult" status, especially JRPGs, I've found to be kinda flat or boring. Stuff like Treasures of Rudra, Bahamut Lagoon, never clicked for me. That said, Live A Live is really hitting for me.

Same with Terranigma. If Terranigma got a western release back then it might not be massive right away, but in the decades following it would rival even Chrono Trigger.

With the internet age, the discussion it would have fostered would rival LttP, Chrono Trigger, FF6, Super Metroid and others. And the US kind of makes discussion of popular topics spread out through the entire world. Japan was and still is too isolationist for that. If these games were released on the US when they should have, who knows what the gaming landscape would be like now. Also FF5 would be a lot more popular than it is today, for years people just saw that game as an oddball and not worth playing compared to 4 and 6.

Hell fricking yes dude this game is sick. I was also surprised by how much I loved the medieval chapter too, the ye olde english VA was incredibly well done, and going back to a more classic JRPG setup to tie things together after every chapter before it changing up the formula was a good choice.

The only thing I don't like about the final chapter is the random encounters which are FF like. It fits the medieval chapter but it gets kind of annoying as you do the dungeons and have to waddle through tons of random encounters especially since every other chapter shows the enemies and gives you opportunity to evade them.

Does this game have level scaling for the bosses? I'm doing the Prehistory chapter first (just got kicked out) and it seems like you will get locked out of grinding pretty often. I would've been royally fricked if I didn't grind a bit in the desert first.

      Anonymous

A lot of chapters don't even allow grinding or it doesn't even matter. Most chapters that do tend to be fine with just a normal run through with the normal amount of enemies.

      Anonymous

no level scaling, but the only times in the game you could possibly need to grind are if you're gonna do the secret bosses in the prehistoric/ninja chapters, a pacifist ninja run, or if you haven't run into enough random encounters in the medieval chapter

Started with Edo Japan and ended up being pretty confused. Since the game hinted that I can do pacifist I tried doing that, but there's no indication if talking to a character will start a fight or lead to dialogue. Should I continue playing this or try a different chapter?

      Anonymous

It gets confusing and if you do pacifist run you have to go grind the spirits until you get to a certain level like 7 or 8 unless you want to suffer and pray to RNG. just avoid enemies and save every often.

        Anonymous

pacifist ninja is incredibly tricky unless you have prior knowledge of the level from a normal completionist run of the level. it can be done though, just save early and often

Doing pacifist requires some really unintuitive shit and you can actually fail the full pacifist run if you don't do everything correctly. Also you can always flee from fights so its not a problem to talk to people, usually.

Hmm, I guess I'll play it as normal for now then. Is there any in game incentive for re-playing the chapter after completion besides "see more stuff"?
Also, some fights don't allow fleeing, like I was surprised by ninja sentai squad and they didn't have a flee option

That's how you know you fricked up is if you can't run from a fight from a human character for a pacifist run.

You get Oboro's strongest weapon from doing full pacifist, and his second-strongest from doing full murder.

          Anonymous

there is a TON of secret bonus content in the ninja level and various ways for it to play out, so it is actually kind of a draw. Beyond that, killing 0 human beings gives you a powerful bonus sword in ninja, and there are two bonus bosses that you're only reasonably gonna be able to kill on a murder playthrough that give extremely powerful equipment rewards- a sword(just as strong as the full pacifist sword) and a special accessory. Pacifist has a ton of different dialogue towards the end too

One of the Secret bosses is extremely easy to find, the other is bit trickier but you probably wont need a guide for it.

Heh, the Go ninja pun got a chuckle out of me, also if you go pacifist you gotta collect koban coins, while playing normally try to remember where they are. There is also way to reset the chests and that makes it easier to obtain the coins but you have to loot the chests before resetting them as you can only do the reset once and it does it for all the chests in the castle.

pacifist ninja is incredibly tricky unless you have prior knowledge of the level from a normal completionist run of the level. it can be done though, just save early and often

      Anonymous

Doing pacifist requires some really unintuitive shit and you can actually fail the full pacifist run if you don't do everything correctly. Also you can always flee from fights so its not a problem to talk to people, usually.

to add to this, note that killing abominations, demons, ghosts, and machines does not count as killing somebody

here's some pointers you will need if you are planning to do a no-kill run

      >you can actually kill animals, monsters, ghosts and machines without penalty, in fact, you need to do so and grind to level 9 at least to be able to beat Ode Iou.
      >you can flee out of the majority of fights against the human characters, (the dudes you are not supposed to kill) and many of the fights are triggered only if you speak with the people and even then you can run away from the majority of those, always save before talking with a suspicious person.
      >you dont need to focus on rescuing the main prisoner, dude can take care of himself, BUT you will need to rescue the guy called Goemon, and be patient enough to backtrack,
      >theres only 6 kobans, and theres one, AND ONLY ONE PLACE where those are needed, if you dont have them on hand, or spend them elsewhere, like, say with some random pot, you will not complete the run, period.
      >theres 3 bosses before Ode Iou, but you will only need to take down 1 of them, and that one guy is also connected with a key element that will help you in your run, since these 3 guys are not humans, they do not count as part of the kill count.

i think that should help enough.

So how do we feel about the flowery-as-frick dialogue from the Medieval chapter in the remake? Personally I like it. Oersted's breakdown is a bit over-the-top but it sells it better that he's talking like he's from a Shakespeare play.

Fittingly he got pretty Shakespearean protagonist treatment as well.

        >spoiler
That actually explains a lot. The story initially presents itself as a fairly conventional JRPG but plays out like a Shakespearian tragedy. I wonder if that was at all an inspiration when they wrote it.

          Anonymous

I feel like there's aspects of oersted's story in all the other chapters. Like how wild west is about a bitter rivalry and prehistory is the young hero saving a princess from a dragon.

I hate how this genre peaked during the SNES/PS1 days.

Octopath has some loose structural similarities but overall its more like a hybrid between Live A Live and a SaGa game (and worse than either).
Also, Live A Live made the party feel more like a party over the course of one chapter than Octopath did over an entire game.

              Anonymous

Octopath has decent gameplay, and each individual story isn't bad (some are better than others, but I wouldn't say any are AWFUL), and each protagonist is charming enough, but they utter lack of any real crossover and the finale just being kinda silently resolved in a side-quest leaves a bad taste.

                Anonymous

Funny how LAL credits evoke exactly what OT was missing: the party feeling like a party?

Also the finale (and only the finale) requires you to use all eight characters.

Lots of people that got that far realized they'd have to grind up another 3-4 characters and just dropped then.

Oh, that. I wouldn't say that bug strictly makes the game harder. You can make it work for you by letting NPCs level up outside of your party before recruiting them, because their growths won't be fricked until they're with you.

Bahamut Lagoon would cause so much butthurt from self insert gays. I really love the cast in that game, Madelite is based

The main story is nothing to write home about at all. I do like the stupid little side stories the crew seems to have between chapters like Bikkebikke's business exploits, the relationship between Barclay and one of the mages, etc. Those felt fun

Because, while on LAL is just a meme, in Bahamut Lagoon is completely played straight from start to finish. Hell, it's so brutal that someone wrote a whole page about it.

The main reason is because the cuck arc is a hell of a lot more than a love interest being stolen, it is the complete upheaval and breaking point of what was by all accounts a good, virtuous honorable man that wanted to do nothing but good in the world. The true breaking point that really made him turn is back on the entire universe and made him say "FRICK this" to the point where he is willing to completely blow it up if he is losing

If you ever played Devil Survivor, that is probably the best way to describe the gameplay. It is fun fricking around and raising dragons, but there isn't really anything remotely challenging until the end game. I think it is an interesting and fun game worth playing still, and it is pretty charming. The NTR shit doesn't matter because the MC feels like a fricking non character for 90% of the game

Bahamut Lagoon's greatest quality is in its spritework. It already looks fantastic, and to be honest there's not much to the game beyond that. A remake wouldn't do much for it.

Of these four, Terranigma is probably the most likely. It's held in similar regard to Live A Live as a hidden gem that was never released in the US, and unlike LAL they wouldn't have to localize it from scratch.

    Finally a thread.
I just beaten the old master route. It's really funny that the antagonist and his goons name are based on Mahjong. (Iipekou, 3 dragons, winds)
I wanna ask something about censorship since I'm playing this in Japanese
I heard some lines like this
    >Lei: Samo... why are you helping me?
    >Samo: Because... you're a woman. And we must be kind towards women!
    >Lei: Me? A woman? hahaha....

Also bandit ravaging the marketplace (before 2 disciples got murdered)
    >Give me women!! Lots of women!!
and the the "puff puff" reward once we BTFO the bandit, one of female villager asked us to follow her to inside a house
    >Roshi: "Wha-!? Young people are doing THIS kind of thing in a hidden place like this!? unbelieveable... this is... WHAT AN AMAZING MANJU (tl'd as dumpling?)"

Are these censored too in EN?

I assume it's because they don't blip out the usernames. Either way there's not much more to discuss about it. All the more crazy changes are known and the rest is pretty accurate. Given that Nintendo probably owns the IP it's unlikely to come to PC too so you all just need to learn Japanese for the uncensored version. Start it up today even for the next game they do for it will surely continue.

No, they're only showing game screenshots.
          >All the more crazy changes are known and the rest is pretty accurate.
It's not very accurate overall and more changes have been found every day so this is a rather bizarre statement.
          >you all just need to learn Japanese for the uncensored version.
It's censored in Japanese too, you idiot.

I think it's because 99% of the time when someone posts them they want (You)s or to derail the thread to complain about censorship

Translation comparisons unrelated to censorship have also been getting deleted.

No, is because they do nothing but derail threads i to massive shitposting.

        None?
7R received mass amounts of criticism because it wasn't even a remake and was being sold in parts not to mention the butchered gameplay.
Meanwhile you have remakes for 1 to 4 loaded with new content and changes and people loved them. If 5 and 6 had that treatment but with 2DHD there's no reason to assume people will b***h about it.

            >Such as?
What do you mean "such as"?
They can just make new content and bosses like they did with Geryon, Chronodia, the Light Emperor, the iron giant and any extra dungeons they want.
Hell, remember Whyt the customizable Summon? As long as they put thought into how it can improve the game there's no limits on what they can do.
I'd also like to add that the PRs didn't even include the additional content present in the GBA ports like Enuo or Kaiser Dragon, the latter in particular is odd because that was a dummied out boss in the original anyway.

People have repeatedly shat on the various 1/2 remakes for being too easy/changing the systems. Most people consider 3/4 3D versions as entirely separate games and not replacements for originals (which is what the pixel remasters are effectively intended to be).

On 2D-HD: I stand by my belief that its pretty but its primary purpose is to trick people into play 2D games "as new". The improved graphics themselves don't really add much to the experience - they will be prettier, but that's it. (And don't forget that people already b***hed about FF PR sprite changes.)

I would go so far as to say Live-A-Live uniquely benefits from 2D-HD, more than games like Octopath and Triangle Strategy, because LAL is parodies/riffs on storytelling across many different media, so it actually explicitly benefits from things like unique camera angles and "cinematography" (see: the wild west and ninja chapters).

            >People have repeatedly shat on the various 1/2 remakes for being too easy/changing the systems. Most people consider 3/4 3D versions as entirely separate games and not replacements for originals
You are the only person I have ever seen say this, ever. At most it's a mention of the changes in 1 and 2 but it's rarely seen as a bad change.

If they really care about money they'll probably do IV.

VI is popular in the west, but not as much in Japan, V has the opposite problem. IV is the runner up in both regions and thus would grant the maximum worldwide revenue.

Also they can lazily just slap TAY on it again or sell it separately for even more money.

      >Masaru is an idiot
He's one of the only characters in the finale who sees Sundown and says "Well, I don't want to fight against a gun." Can't be THAT moronic.

in the original, he actually has the lowest IQ growth before they changed the name of it to special attack.

To be fair he's the only one who can understand what a gun is, especially modern guns. Everyone else has a theoretical defence for it.

Anyone know what room this is in the remake? I've tried western hallways but no ninja is appearing.

Someone posted this image in a previous thread, it must be the hallway behind this room.

        Anonymous

I can't find that room. The problem is, is that right next to the room that gives you the view of the ninja, is this room. It's the exact same background, just without the ninja. And after sitting around cloaked for a bit I have to assume this is the room you go to following the path.

          Ok. Nevermind.
Turns out, you have to go up to floor 2, then back down a different staircase that leads to the attic.
And you gotta stay cloaked for a pretty damn long time too.

Yun can learn all the moves if you pick up since he starts at level 1
Lei can learn most of it outside of like 1 or 2 since she won't have enough experience to learn all of them until the final stage.
Hong is a handicap since you have to more or less pick the best moves first then level him up normally in the final chapter.

Just how much of a pain in the ass is it to recruit Sundown? I chose Sundown for the final chapter when I played the original and I’d like to see what somebody else does when they’re the MC, but I hear it’s pretty annoying to actually get Sundown on your team if he’s not the MC.

If you pick Lei for the final chapter is probably easier to get him since she starts at the mountain along with him.

Doing it myself now, I've realized what they'd done.
They made it so every maid 'seems' like a kunoichi when you pick the kill option, but in reality they're still just defenseless maids.
They probably did it to make the player feel less bad about slaughtering innocent people.

This game is pretty fun so far. How is the SNES original? I'm thinking about playing that on my SD2SNES.

It’s a good game but it would definitely be hard to go back to. The remake has a lot of QoL stuff like actually being able to see what your moves do before using them and being able to skip the cutscene for Near Future item refinement. There are few songs that I think are better in the original (Prehistoric battle theme comes to mind) and I think you could equip any item as an accessory but I might be remembering wrong on that one.

      >the hidden ninja that you have to cloak in a specific room to get
      >the woman that only appears if you've killed no women until the very end, RIGHT before Ode Iou
Shame it's impossible to bring O-Robo the the end regardless of which route you go.

I dunno are you a coke or pepsi guy

Honestly, it's not that bad of a fight once you get this down to a T.

the cola grind sounds like a pain and probably not really worth doing?

No, it's definitely the more accurate one.
I don't know, I'm ambivalent. Against this Gatling Gun is iconic, but I can appreciate "Repay you in our common currency." The chapter in general got more "Spaghetti Westernized" in its dialogue, and that's one of the casualties. I like the new one for what it is, but I do also miss the original.
