It singlehandedly reignited and simultaneously extinguished my love of jrpgs because I know I'll never experience anything like it again. The quirky anime stuff simply makes it more charming and blends wonderfully with the overarching themes.

I believe the correct term you're looking for when you say "quirky anime stuff" is "cringey and obnoxious tropes".

I'm replaying it right now and it just feels so much shitter than 1. Navigating menus is clunky as frick and half of the weapon types just feel like shit to use
It still has the best music in the trilogy and I do enjoy the story but there's so many little things that just make it feel like trash

I'd agree with this, though because it came out in 2017, it didn't have the production value or star-power in its staff to get as many eyes on it.
But it's not a mistake that most of the people who play it end up falling madly in love with it by the end.

The gameplay is too bloated compared to chronos
The writing is a convoluted, cringe filled mess compared to chronos
It's paced terribly, compared to Chrono.

Personally, I would argue that the Mario RPGs are far superior. For starters, all of their special attacks are more interactive. They're not movies.

The game is about forcing the player to be a servant without agency. We're just expected to be along for the ride and the reasoning is "um, revenge is like bad or something".

It delivers on the promise of JRPGs of mixing Japanese sensibilities around style or tone or character archetypes with the narrative immersion and investment of Role Playing Games as an artistic medium.

I'd rate XBC2 if the middle didn't fricking drag so fricking much.
From Chapter 7 onward it's pure kino but Chapter 4-6 fricking sucked

      Anonymous

I quite liked the middle chapters myself.
I like how 4's latter half is something between a mystery story and mecha homage
5's story is a nice leisurely detour to Rex's village through a semi-tropical environment and then you get to go to the Vatican which is comfy in its own way.
Chapter 6 is neat because of how you have a whole goofy political thriller contained in Indol, and then you go off to Tantal which is where the end-game gets set-up
I think Xenoblade excels at that contrast of tones and pacing to let the fast-paced, hard-hitting and tense moments hit harder. One of the issues I had with the recent FFXVI is that there's really only 1 moment of downtime in the whole game when you go to see Uncle Byron and the rest of the game is just non-stop tension

        Anonymous

I think that's fine but I felt like by adding a lot of these elements, at some point the story began to feel like it was unraveling before me just before they decided to tighten it up at the end by introducing stakes. I haven't played it since 2018 but I still remember those middle chapters being the longest in the terms of gameplay time, so I don't think that helps all that much in it's favor. I frankly just wasn't that interested in the story until Pyra/Mythra got separated from Rex and Nia had to step in as his Blade.

          Anonymous

The middle chapters are long mainly due to introducing 3 open zones (Letheria, Mor Ardain and Tantal) so you get a lot to do in terms of side quests too.
The last few chapters are very linear, so they tend to go by quickly since you're liable to knock them out in quick succession

In all seriousness, I do agree. I never could get into Rex, but I was happy it worked out for him like I would be happy for a friend. Looking at Pyra and Mythra and a few other blades did keep me going. The game itself dwelt on the extremes between having me on the edge to me trying not to die from cringe. I think that's why it was a success, because it's not a like/dislike thing but a love/hate thing- so that everybody has a strong opinion about it.

As for story, I was more into XCI. I liked Melia's character more than Fiora's, but I get why it went down like it did. I also hope the voice actors had a lot of fun voicing the Faces, because I know I would have.

On the note of XB2, I think the environments and music were my favorite thing of it. The sad thing is that I couldn’t handle the English VA at all, had to go to JP immediately. Took me years to even do the DLC.
Hope you enjoyed XB3 tho. The voice direction improvement was really huge. I was always explaining here why XB2’s dub was ass, cause it didn’t have Mark Healy directing it, and I was really pleased to see his name in the opening credits.

The sound of fingers snapping can be heard cutting through the disturbing silence in Enel’s Discord
The lights flicker on, brightening the room immediately
    Lined up are two men
Their names are Enel and Abarax
Their bodies show signs of intense beatings
    They are chained in place
Across from them is a curtained stage
The curtains open revealing none other the doll flight module creator herself
Lin Lee Koo walks up to the mic placed on stage
"Greetings my loyal subjects! You've been brought here tonight to witness a very special show! Welcome to-"
    Lin claps her hands together
Behind her lights reveal a group of buff, black men in skintight speedos
The men are appropriately well endowed
"This is the NLA Nutting Night!"
Lin undresses herself, revealing her tight young mimeosome body
The black men become instantly erect, their speedos burst at the seams unable to contain their massive members
Lin drops to her knees and begins servicing their wieners immediately
Her technique is unmatched, she's easily able to take them all to the hilt
Enel starts sobbing, but is so turned on he is unable to look away
And Abarax starts thrashing wildly to little effect, as he is far too weak to ever break the chains shackling him
However, both ejaculate so much their pants end up becoming balloons in a short amount of time
The night goes on for what feels like an eternity to them, as their beloved inventor continues to take loads upon loads of their hot spunk into her barely developed mimeosome pussy
They conclude their depraved orgy with a bukkake session fitting of royalty
    Lin picks up the mic
"I hope you boys enjoyed the show! Elma! Rook! Execute them!"
Elma and the protagonist obey without question, with a ether blossom dance that instantly puts an end to her once biggest fans
    Their suffering has ended

It is really good. One of the best games I've played in the last decade. It's a fun adventure and it's really well made to. Can't believe they were able to throw together a masterpiece like this only two years after XCX, which is also great.

I love xenoblade chronicles 2. I've also never watched an anime or read a manga. Wonder if that's why I like the game so much since I don't know anime tropes or anything. It was just a fun filled time for me

Gacha was the dumbest fricking idea possible and the fact that I got what was probably the worst possible rolls throughout the game significantly hampered my enjoyment and gimped the gameplay massively until I gave in and used the DLC blades, which were so broken they made the game a cakewalk until the post-game challenge battles, and even then most of them were easy.

It's so magically autistic and moronic that I'm not surprised that you wound up liking it.

Oh I get it. It's a moronic shonen that's only liked because it's on Nintendo and it has a good composer. I've 100% the game and I've since sworn off the series because I've never seen such an intensely moronic JRPG before this one.
If this wasn't Nintendo exclusive it would have gotten ripped to shreds for how bad it is.

This game is simply made out of pure sovl. You just can feel that the developers expressed their soul in their work. They put in in this game what they find fun and what they love. Everything Poppi is a testament to that, for example, but that's just a little excerpt. They put in the game what personally brings smile on their own faces. And it wasn't limited to the director, it's the entire team. You just FEEL their heart through your pad. For the non-underage down there, you know those numerous fricking boring office meetings? No such case here, you just know how much fun they had in those numerous project meetings, picking up what will be implemented the game the game. They had a blast making the game, and they simply didn't make a product, no, they made something they love, and it shows. Any true gamer can feel it pad in their hands.
