No, it didn't. On paper it started 3 years ago, in practice it only started March of this year. I don't understand how people act like this gen started three years ago and just ignore the biggest thing to ever affect a gen's progression in Covid just to laugh at how nothing has really happened.
They couldn't even get consoles out reliably for over two years, chip shortages were everywhere, normal consumers couldn't even buy them in stores and enthusiasts had to sit on scalper-tier bots just to grab one when they went up. Almost no one was releasing current gen games exclusively and if they were it was either Squeenix when moneyhatted and only on PS5, and indies. We didn't even start seeing a slowdown on previous gen versions or backports until like within the past few months, and it's very likely that's just because Microsoft has signaled that we should start getting a move on by forcing their first-party devs to only make games for the Series systems.
This gen started in March as that's when chips finally got under control and you could, as a layman, go on Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop and buy a PS5 or SeX without an issue. If anything we'll see it last for arguably longer than gens 6 or 7 just thanks to Covid.
7th gen was worse, you can't get worse than crippling the game industry for decades to come in terms of worth. This gen is just plain unnoticeable but it hasn't actively done anything terrible aside from goypass.

It's just an extension of the previous gen. Series X is better than the absolute disaster that was the Xbone, but still not worth buying. PS5 is literally just a PS4 Pro Pro.

All the consoles are competitive for a change unlike how the PS4 decimated the competition last gen. SNES and Megadrive to PS3/360/Wii was the peak gaming period. It was shit before the snes and megadrive and it went to shit again immediately as soon as the PS4 came out.
7th gen was already stagnant as frick and was actively taking significant measures to ensure that stagnancy, Dark Souls of all things was praised as being this new yardstick of difficulty, just because practically every game genre at the time was so heavily automated and handholdy that the concept of a game that didn't just outright have a journalist mode in the menu was alien.
There were entire genres that revolved around figuring out and refining the best ways to make games play themselves without the player catching on and being socially shamed.
7th gen feels like a monkey's paw. A lot of terrible 6th gen control and camera conventions were refined into something that felt reasonably smooth but with that came extreme conformity, half the releases became splintercell camera hold L1 to shoot.
quest 2 silently won the console war but europoors and shitworlders wouldn't know, 3 looks like a major upgrade while sony is making gay switch knockoffs and xbox just streams games

I bought an XSX and am playing through the last three generations of game I missed, it's honestly pretty good
What is the difference between the series S and series X? Are there games you can't play on the S?
