This is the only game from the RTS golden age that has not only survived but remained popular and relevant. It even BTFOs its own sequels in the series.
What's AoE2's secret? Nostalgia alone isn't enough to keep it afloat (AoE1 has more nostalgic value yet it's only super popular in Vietnam).

It is the same reason why Xbox hasnt closed down after it is losing $$$ like a drunken sailor at a brothel. Microsoft can throw resources at any project it wants because it is literally a drop-in-bucekt for them/

aoe2 could run in any toaster while aoe3-aoe4 need a decent pc
aoe3 is far more complex and deep to fully master
    medieval settings are more popular

No thank you that shit is really boring, it was popular mostly because of this

    Solid gameplay?
    AoE4 is also popular
And Total Annihilation spiritual successors are still popular. Like FAF and BAR

I love SupCom but FAF's community is rather small and consists entirely of veterans so getting into it can be a pain in the ass

      Microsoft pays for tournaments

      >Aoe 4
lmao, succesful in being a known failure

I've never played an RTS besides Red Alert 2 and Galactic Battlegrounds (AoE2 reskin basically, fun game though) when I was a kid.

Is AoE2 or AoE4 the one to go with as a semi-new player?

You have to learn like 30 civs in AoE 2 and it´s economy system is even harder than SC Broodwar´s Pro level mining
AoE 4 is ...just watch videos, the graphics are awful

Why is Microsoft unable to top their own game. AOE2 pulls triple the number of AOE4 players on a bad day, usually its 10x as much. Thats incredible. Thats not even counting the Xbox players. This moron thinks AOE4 is popular but anyone who pays remotely attention knows that game is borderline dead. My question is why cant Microsoft top AOE2? Is their longgame making money off Starcraft IP now? SC3 is rumored to be worked on with help of the AOE2 team

    >What's AoE2's secret?
Comfy architecture, great music, non-annoying unit voicelines, simple mechanics, lots of factions.
Every single RTS that followed tries too hard to be different, ending up more of a chore to play.
AoE2's biggest gimmicks are metagame stuff like quickwalling and deer pushing, not limiting intended mechanics to make the game more boring like what AoE4 did for every faction.

It's the grid. It's a fair game too
Your strategy can shift and there's a bluff game too. Quick thinking can reward you more than APM.

    >What's AoE2's secret?
You wanna know? Here it is:
    >solid music
    >solid visuals
    >solid aesthetic representation of medieval times
    >SOLID gameplay foundations with the counters, armor systems, bonus damage systems and their implementations

The tweaks throughout the years have made it better and fine tuned it, but the foundations were really good. And they did the DE graphics upgrade with gusto, with love, while gameplay wise they brought in some minor upgrades and streamlining.

AOEII is a god tier game. It's unfortunate that turbonerds have co-opted the game and made it unfun to play in multiplayer but single player will forever be top tier. I haven't played it myself in years but I still love it.

    >Nostalgia alone isn't enough to keep it afloat
Are you sure? Because the playerbase and competitive community for AoE 2 DE is almost entirely composed of boomers who played AoE 2 back in the day I'm one of them.

Game was revived by youtubers like T90, but it also has good fundamental design.
Outside of things like the "Kill me or I win" civs and naval play, the game is well-designed and well-balanced, using a team of modders who were already well-acquainted with the game.
The graphical upgrade for DE nailed it, and now we get regular DLC and balance patches.
They just kept adding to the game in measured ways, and now it's an unstoppable juggernaut.

For starters it has good campaigns which is what people actually want and the DE devs realized this and made a shit ton of single player content and challenges for it.

On the PvP side it has a good balance between civs being generic enough to easily learn and win reguardless of who you choose while still have enough differences to where if you do want to go autisticly pro you can and it will make a difference.

It also helps that the base game and it's DLC is pretty cheap and has a free mode as well.

They made plenty of improvements, but when they ported it to the Xbox, we saw a massive downgrade. It's best if you micro your wood vills in the dark age now.
