How come people act like the first and final stage are in competition with one another? I like Snivy, so I like Serperior, as an example. People only liking stage 1 of a starter and then hating the final stage is a fairly recent phenomenon and absolutely not the norm, hence why both Samu and Oshwott both placed just like most other starters who have two or even three of their forms placing.

Early in DP Piplup is kept in its Pokeball for the most part but then they realized how popular it was so they had Dawn start carrying it around like with Misty's Togepi and had that episode where it refused to evolve. Still they gave two rivals Empoleon as their main Pokemon, while Paul only used his Torterra sparingly, and the only other Infernape that showed up was Flint's near the end.
