TKL is nice because it creates a much more natural stance while playing instead of having your arms super wide apart. If you really want a numpad so bad, just buy a separate one and put it on the left side where it makes a lot more sense.
Gamers used WASD/QWER instead of homerow, so the keyboard is much farther right than it would be for normal use, so with the numpad there, it's just too wide to give you plenty of room for your mouse to have a good sensitivity and not hit come to close to your keyboard
With a full-size keyboard you are forced to either take an extremely wide stance (even with wide shoulders, your arms are going to be flared out a lot more than comfortable), to use a very high sensitivity on your mouse (bad for your wrist, less precise, and more fatiguing), or have your hand coming right next to your keyboard while you are moving your mouse around.
