This person was thinking ahead, the perfect RPG controller, except the buttons were awful

Yes, for all of those great N64 RPGs. All zero (0) of them.

You only need 2 action buttons for an RPG along with pause, for confirm/cancel/menu. I fail to see how this piece of shit is perfect for the genre. If anything TGFX or the NES pad are the perfect rpg controllers

This, it was great for Ogre Battle, Paper Mario, the list goes on

I have a Gamecube to N64 controller adapter, it's cool but you have to program it per game to get a good control scheme. Gamecube controllers are built better than all the N64's 3rd party jank. Except for the D-Pad, of course...

Nah, I had two of these and hated them. The buttons sucked and the plastic analog piece came off of its little metal shaft after a while. Good layout though.

    Is this any good?

I have one, it's great for Mario and Zelda but it doesn't work well for every game's control scheme so sometimes you need to bring out a real N64 controller (Ex. I prefer original controller on Star Fox 64)

      Behold, my final form.

Why are they insisting on using the same flawed analog stick? Since its not an authentic controller anyway, just use more robust parts.

        Anonymous

What do you mean? That stick has to have at least twice the surface area of the original and the mechanism (word?) of the stick isnt the same

        Anonymous

Because that cuts into profits. Doesn't help that your average """"retro gamer"""" will buy it anyways.

The best N64 controller is a modern Dualshock/Xbox pad.

Do you just bind two of the C buttons to the L/R buttons like a homosexual or what?

          Anonymous

Usually I bind all four to the right stick, but sometimes to L2/R2.

    dropped.

      Anonymous

was that a thing on N64 fps games? i though you used the c-buttons and joystick

        Anonymous

you can but that's a left-handed control scheme. do you play any modern fps on PC or console? If so you probably move your character with your left hand and look around with your right. using dpad to move and stick to aim is analogous to WASD for movement and mouse for aim. moving with c buttons would be like using WASD with your right hand.

        Anonymous

It's not the default, but its a control scheme for Turok, and makes it 1000% better. Walk and strafe with the d-pad, and aim with the analog stick. L button jumps, Z button shoots if I remember correctly.

I know I liked it for the MK games, but I can't remember if it was good for the rest of the fighters. Z trigger felt very natural though, especially compared to them going the other direction with the cube

I don't understand why people can't just use the regular controller. When people say the analog stick is bad I have zero clue what they mean. It's one of the best analog sticks.

      Anonymous

why lie? It's a hard plastic stick with no rubberized texture that slowly grinds itself down into white dust until becoming loose and unusable. I love the N64 but come on moron.

        Anonymous

I'm not lying. What incentive would I even have to do so? The fragility of the stick isn't a flaw from a gameplay perspective which is what people were attacking. Also can you please not insult me for no reason ?

I don't understand why people can't just use the regular controller. When people say the analog stick is bad I have zero clue what they mean. It's one of the best analog sticks.

I have two OEM N64 controllers. I hate them because of the stick. There's no clean action in all directions, approaching the gate feels like it's grinding. The plastic has no grip so my thumb slides around on it, and due to the mentioned grinding it requires a decent amount of force to reach the edges of the gate which starts to hurt my thumb after a bit.

Both controllers have the exact same feeling stick. It's miserable. I bought one of those 'gamecube style' replacement sticks, and while it's 100xs nicer feeling it flat out missreads and has weird deadzones so it's useless. Then I ended up getting the hori mini controller which has a far, far, faaaar better stick, but the rest of the layout is a little awkward to sue and it's basically worthless for the few games that use the dpad

But yeah, not clue how anyone stands the N64 stick. It's awful

            Anonymous

That's not how my stick works. Its buttery smooth. And the precision afforded by the n64 stick is unmatched

Well lucky you, but I've never had an N64 controller that didn't feel like my description, and I assume few people have given how much people desperately look for stick replacements

Literally just don't play Mario Party. If you're not violently spinning the joystick as fast as possible every day that issue never comes up.

that's a flat out lie, I've never even owned Mario party or and the stick absolutely wears down within a few years of use.

My N64 was fine from 1996 through to 2008 when I graduated from uni. And it wasn't broken in 2008 either, I just left it at my parents' house and they got rid of it when they moved.

I wish. Looks good on paper, but the joystick is way to tall, for lack of a better word. I had one of these when they came out, but the joystick feels so off, its detrimental.
