How would anyone know though? Ultra Sun and Moon seem to indicate that it isn't actually what it looked like. Ultra Sun says the form is a burden on the Pokémon. Ultra Moon says only some of the rock covering came back. It also didn't indicate it came back correctly. It losing it's hands doesn't seem like an advantage.
It's a forced evolution on an incomplete creature which could explain the strain.
It's becoming complete though. Why would the form strain it? You'd think it would finally feel at home in it's own skin. I personally think it's still incomplete even when mega evolved. Ultra Moon seems to suggest the rocks should be completely covering its body not just in random patches on its body. I think this is also backed up by the loss of it's hands.
Read more mega evolution entries, being driven berserk or put into stress is a common theme, a flaw with the energy itself. And yeah I do agree with you, even mega aerodactyl looks half baked.
