The first "success" the game had was spring Steam sales many years ago. For some reason a lot of people picked it up then as PC version, prompting Bandai to announce CV sold well couple of months afterwards.
Turns out doing Bargain Bin Games for Bargain Bin Prices is a good earning model. Even if the game is flawed you get good reviews anyway because the low price brings lower expectations. Judging from this video of a japanese code monkey doing some completely different project and the youtuber mutt bumping into Code Vein Team by accident, they're definitely the B-team or even C-team within Bandai Namco offices.
Because it was a bad game and its sole saving grace was the character creator.

Honestly? Filtering without some of the fun that souls games manage to pack in with their own filtering. I feel part of it was due to shit enemy ai for some of the major fights. Enemies would swap aggro at the drop of a hat regardless of who was causing the most damage at the time, it’s for that reason that Bladebearer and cannoneer in particular were like pulling teeth. The virgin borne also suffered this problem on top of being a pain in the ass because it was a battle against the camera more than the boss itself unless you stayed locked off.
Cathedral of blood was just a shit show all around, I say that as one of the stubborn bastards that managed to 100% it. Not as bad as the frickshittery that was the district though.

I think a lot of people went into it expecting it to play exactly like anime dark souls only to be sorely surprised that trying to play like that without actually using any of your skills leads to a painful experience leading them to drop it. I had the same experience at first, even going into the whole "grug smash" type of build that I normally do in souls games and had a very, very hard time. I was also just stubborn and didn't want to use companions despite the game being very clearly balanced around having one at all times (this was especially painful against the fencer and flamer dude).

Yes. On top of the extremely clunky movement and terrible animations, it's a game that plays like a MMORPG in the sense that you're intended to spam special skills and keep your character under debuffs the entire time or the thing is borderline unplayable.
Oh, and due to the way the game is designed and balanced you're intended to be carried by a computer-controlled NPC. Think about it as a Dark Souls game where Solaire is obligatory to clear even the simplest areas.
It's a textbook example of anime shovelware, in the same vein as games like the Senran Kagura series, the Blue Reflection series, the Neptunia Series or Vita scraps like Seven Pirates and even then Senran Kagura fans look down on it. . But if you like that kind of game you may have a good time with it.

Been cooping GER and it's fun but I absolutely don't understand what is the intention, how you are meant to play. The fact levels are so small, after finishing mission you have limited time to loot, some enemies being absolute damage sponges if you don't use the correct weapon. Are you just meant to craft a bunch of shit and pick and choose weapons based on enemies?
I never played monster hunter so maybe that's why I feel lost.
You can compensate not hitting an elemental weakness by just shooting them with that element(hitting elemental weaknesess does make it easier tho)
I played most of the game with the "canon" weapon Clemencor, which is ice, but even then didn't have much trouble with ice enemies

Scarlet Nexus has very good chances of getting a sequel due to action games getting a renaissance, Bamco having a lot of faith on the franchise (remember, it got a proper, carefully crafted DLC unlike Code Vein) and having an overall positive reception (unlike Code Vein).
I only paid around 18 euros for Code Vein, nothing wrong with bargain bin Dark Souls if the price tag is also bargain bin. For 20 bucks I had a lot of fun. And fapped to the scarred opera singer once or twice.
People defending CV does it because they only paid $15-20 for it, played it on Gamepass or just pirated it (it was one of the few Denuvo-protected games to get cracked almost instantly without the developer having released an uncracked .EXE before, due to using one of Denuvo's earliest versions).

I'll just be honest about it:
It's a 7/10 dark souls clone with a good anime character creator, a pretty neat blood code system that lets you mix and match powers without respeccing, a story that's oddly more hopeful than its chunni edgelord aesthetics gives off, but last but most importantly classic anime girl tiddies.
The weakest element would have to be some of the weapon feel/weight, and the maps are something straight out of ps2-era simplicity.

Animu souls-clone where you have 2 AI co-op buddies following you around. You're a cybergoth vampire soldier wandering around post-apocalyptic ruins, tasked to find more artificial blood to drink while killing vampire mutants who have gone mad from hunger. Kingdom Hearts plot ensues. Its a decent game for the low pricetag. Just be prepared for the actual plot being Kingdom Hearts despite all the characters being vampires wearing gasmasks. Game has a lot of monster girl bosses and enemies if you're into that kind of thing.
It's like Dark Souls but it has input shortcuts for spells and buffs that isn't absolute fricking garbage so they're actually both easy and important to use mid-battle.
Western devs are ahead, allright.
It's not really what I want, but it's still way better than what western devs offer these days with all the ugly dykes and troons.
