This is what peak controller design looks like.
No wonder it became the default controller, it's pointless to buy anything newer. Even the more recent xbox controllers have nothing on this beast.

>shitty d-pad
fpbp
sp also bp?
360 has a good comfy shape but if you retro/indie game symmetrical is outright better and a good dpad is absolutely needed. (disc dpads are fine but the 360 dpad is shit underneath is the issue)
Dual Sense d-pad is actually good, doesn't accidentally hit diags and input is fast....but no back buttons, balls battery to have dumbshit extra features, and granted I do prefer a disc dpad like Sega/Vita. Dual Sense is the well frick I can't find better controller, but its not as bad. I would trade most of its stupid features for some back buttons tho.
This. This so God damn much. There is a reason no one ever used the 360 controller during fighting games.
No one plays fighting games. D-pads are just a type of face button.
which is why joycon style seperated dpads should be the standard.
Smug beats these allegations long ago
Kys Sonygay
symmetric analogs with back buttons are peak
Only if you have dainty small hands
The improvements makes this one better
Terrible d-pad
Drops A button inputs and cheaper build quality than 360
Also bad D-pad, and also has cheaper build quality
Still waiting on the perfect controller
I find the shell of the 360 more comfortable
I understand there's probably more of a comfort/convenience mindset that went towards this design, but it doesn't look as fun as the 360 controller. For lack of a better term, the 360 has soul. But I suppose it doesn't matter since you can buy a knockoff 360 that will connect to a series x or whatever.
>tldr
The series x controller looks to modern.
No way. I have both. That one is flimsy as frick in comparison. Flimsy enough that I've since went the Hall effect Chinktroller route and never looked back. 8mdrn
the biggest issue is the cheap feeling face buttons. My A button has begun to wear from playing platformers
Is the series controller better when it comes to its d pad?
Significantly. Fully microswitched and the circular shape is arguably better especially for things like fighting games.
>microswitched
>circular shape
>better for fighting games
i bought into one of these and it's just a shittier Sega circle pad
it's like it's designed by white people who just used the Genesis and Saturn controllers like they were Nintendo and moved their thumb across instead of just pivoting the pad
made me really have to take every opinion about controllers with a grain of salt, like it's coming from people who can barely throw a hadouken and say they play fighting games
somehow fricking mice and keyboards have better reviewers, it's crazy
So whose controller did you steal, Tyrone?
Way better, the series controller mogs on almost every other controller
>face buttons suck
>shoulder buttons suck
>shape sucks (on the series x variants)
>but the d pad is better
nope 360 mogs this
Slap the DualShock 4 or saturn dpad on this & it's a perfect controller.
Having used both for my PC for several years it's SEX > 360 >>>>> ONE
Haven't tested anything else. But that's as far as Xbox.
360 feels nicer to grip than SEX but SEX is better in every other category IMO.
I've come to get pretty comfortable with the xbone dpad but the SEX dpad is pure sex
>but the SEX dpad is pure sex
So it's physically demanding, feels good for a few minutes then becomes a chore before feeling intensely good & then leads to feelings of not wanting to be around the dpad after you're done using it?
I had a lot of issues with build quality. I went through three in a year and a half and they all found new ways to fail. I was disappointed because I FINALLY retired my 360 controller and just assumed they wouldn't frick with a a good thing.
The first one had a shitty seam and right where you put your finger tips was a sharp edge of plastic that would murder your fingers if you played for any length of time.
Needs hall effect sticks to be complete as we know it. Too bad the whole point of first party controllers these day is to fail in at most 2 years of regular use. They cost like $5 to make, so they make serious money out of them.
Buttons are too loud.
>Even the more recent xbox controllers have nothing on this beast.
Besides a better D-Pad? I guess.
>Even the more recent xbox controllers have nothing on this beast.
trigger rumble and better dpad. I switched from x360 controller to series controller and it's better overall.
/thread
garbage battery and it's too small
Are you thinking the PS3 or PS4? PS4 felt tiny but PS5 is decent sized, its bigger than 8bitdo. Or was Andre the giant your dad or something.
Trash battery is valid though. I've never used its gyro, mic, touchpad, etc but I would give those for a bigger battery in the fricker.
The triggers on these suck
I like the DS4 better for games that don't use all the fancy haptic features on the dualsense (sadly that's most games)
This shit feels like it's constantly about to slip out of my hands and the shape is just awkward as frick
it’s my favourite controller ever.
>clicky d-pad (not spongy)
>clicky face buttons (again, not spongy)
>haptic feedback is immersive
>not too heavy but not too light either
>good size palm grips
>sticks have grippy edges
I literally never have a problem with-
>DualSense controller battery low. Please plug into power supply.
FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-
it does not have a clicky d-pad. It has the same dpad all playstation controllers have ever had. Compare it to the xbone one controllers. Those are clicky. The controller is close to perfection. it just needs that xbox one d pad.
It will always remain the greatest.
objectively correct
nah
The almost controller. God tier battery, good layout for modern games, but no analogue and mid tier dpad, but I can respect that it went all in for modern 3D over splitting the difference for retro. Use to use it combo with a SNES usb controller to cover both bases, but I got lazy and wanted all games in one and the no analogue was rough in space games. They were on to something with this one for the first time since the SNES, pity Nintendo shit canned the design to copy Xbox on the Switch.
usb mini
bluetooth-only
laggy bluetooth when used with anything other than wii u
dpad sucks
digital triggers
no back buttons
don't get me wrong it was fine for its day and much better than the abomination that was the Switch Pro controller that only hardcore tendies defend but the needle has moved so much its only noteworthy feature is having the sticks at the top of the face
What's wrong with Switch Pro?
It's hot garbage that is intentionally incompatible with its main competitors despite aping 95% of its design and that's largely because the 360 was the Extend and Extinguish phase of Microsoft's bullshit, where they leverage their market share to get people to adopt and work around their standards and APIs.
The only reason that it is pointless to buy anything newer is because Microsoft will continuously hold everyone else back and because normalgays imprinted so hard on this controller during 7th gen that they won't move to anything newer.
If controllers were progressing properly like they were before 7th gen, then this controller would be SNES controller tier obsolete.
Xbox 360 controller made me never buy another Xbox controller for my PC again.
I'm still rocking 4 360 controllers for my PC. Stick drift is starting to catch up with them though.
xbone or 360 pad is good if you're playing modern games but nothing beats this for 2D games
It's so good.
It was. Plastic was way cheaper than most remember though. Its a clacky noisy bastard, but peak shape and dpad. Have a few originals, a remake that is decently spot on, and then the sad almost good M30 (better plastic/buttons but its smaller in a way that is just bad)
Oops, wrong pic.
hopefully retro-bit makes a revision that lets you use it wired, maybe then i'll consider it
HORI fighting commander octa is wired, but has only one analog stick
I want some of these Chinese handheld companies to make standard controllers out of the guts, the Retroid Pocket 2S has a supremely good controller.
>vita dome-switch + rubber dpad
>hall effect analog sticks and L2+R2
>rubber membrane face buttons
>symmetrical lower sticks
Do you guys ever used this one? 8bitdo ultimate. It's supposed to have a better d pad than the xbone
Have not tried the ultimate specifically but I've been burned by 8bitdo d-pads and sticks enough times that the brand is dead to me
I have the ultimate. that webm happens to it.
good that there's evidence of this because I thought I was just fat fingering it.
A shame to hear the dpad design hasn't improved. I assume the hall effect sticks in that at least avoid the other common issue of random inputs in the opposite direction too large to deadzone out when releasing the sticks.
breddy gud especially for the price
Most dpads are still better than Xbox, except maybe a few of Nintendo's shittier ones. I have the Pro 2 which is a good middle ground, dpad is good but not best, buttons are fine, shape is good, back buttons, etc. Only issue is in some way I hold I press my middle finger against the button of the left trigger which gets swore. Probably more of a me issue than anything. I would spring for the overpriced 200 dollar controllers with back buttons, but all of them have issues as well and at 200 bucks they shouldn't be rivaled by a 50 dollar controller. Sometimes I use a dual sense, its good but for 70 should have better battery and back buttons.
You are approaching this all wrong. If you are using a d-pad often enough to warrant a controller, just buy an OG SNES controller and an adapter. D-pad wise it's as good as it gets. And it's light, really, really light. That there is the key. Combo controllers are great in theory, but lacking in actual practice because the weight gets in the way to how the old style d-pad units used to be.
You just need to lift more, that way you don't need to depend on how light a controller is
i have been using this and probably clocked around 500 hours with it so far, its been pretty good
if you're considering this just wait a couple days until pic related comes out
you guys think they're gonna make a revision or a new one like an ultimate + or ultimate 2 like they did with the sn30pro
I sure hope so, I need one in Playstation layout.
devs need to embrace 6 face buttons and 6 triggers. only then will the controller be perfected.
the switch sticks they went with look horrible and they skimped on the analog triggers
>unuseable dpad
>No wonder it became the default controller, it's pointless to buy anything newer. Even the more recent xbox controllers have nothing on this beast.
Where to get one that's not rotten though? Are there 1:1 knockoffs that work on Windows 7?
How do I fix stick drift?
you replace the stick
read about what actually causes stick drift, when yours drifts it's essentially broken
Soldering required right? For xbox 360 controllers.
Soldering's required on any controller. Even controllers with swappable sticks don't have the potentiometers swappable.
the 360 controller codified good controller design, but it's far from the most comfortable nowdays. it's not bad, but there are plenty of newer controllers that are basically just the 360 controller, but better.
it was awful since it released. The og xbox controller was better. The ps3 controller was better. The WII PRO CONTROLLER WAS BETTER. There's a reason the DS4 was immediately swapped to as the standard after the xbone and ps4 came out.
360 controller has always been awful.
is this good to use on steam? im curious to know if the back peddals are configurable on steam input and not only bound to its software mapper. i need a controller with back peddals like the steam controller for FPS
bound to the software mapper
but the software mapper itself lets you bind the buttons to whatever iirc
Paddles are assignable buttons, whatever button you bind them to in 8bitdo's software will be affected by any Steam Input changes you make to that button.
Agreed. Snoy really should bend the knee and have offset joysticks. I like PlayStation more than Xbox but the controller thing is a huge glaring weakness.
Sony even has better quality of controllers. More durable and more precision on the joysticks. But bad ergonomics more than cancel that out.
Reminder that if your thumbs don’t touch eachother when using the dual sense you’re a manlet with weak feminine hands and small wiener lmao
based cardiac arrest hands anon
>implying im fat
I'm just built like a man and not a japanese schoolgirl
Post a picture of the back of your hand flat against a surface. If the knuckles aren't still sticking up, sorry, you're fat. Take the picture and prove me wrong because right now it looks like you have fat hands.
stay mad handlet
Any controller that uses a circular plate underneath the Dpad to hit the directions such that you can't reliably hit diagonals is a fricking piece of shit. Use individual buttons for each direction. Frick
Opposite day? Cross-shaped d-pads are just awful for diagonals.
Plus, you really want concave or at least flat for your face buttons instead of convex (89iq) like OP.
not bad for third party shit tbh, wish microsoft would let 3rd party have wireless controllers
if you are playing an action shooter game, dualsense. if not, Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma. if playing a nintendo game, use the pro controller. if first person shooter, keyboard and mouse.
there is no best controller and you're an idiot for thinking this.
If shooting is a main priority, you should always use a mouse. Vehicles are an exception. Sony's controllers serve no real purpose in the grand scheme of things.
>used this for a decade on USB 3
>never updated my windows so I was like 3 years behind in updates
>finally update my windows to try Starfield
>now 360 controller isn't recognized when plugged into USB 3 and the lights have a seizure
>when it does finally connect the driver crashes whenever any game uses rumble
>only works with USB 2 now
>motherboard only has two USB 2 ports which I was using for other things
>in the future once motherboards stop supplying USB 2 ports my controller isn't going to work anymore
Thanks Bill and Todd, very cool.
