symmetric analogs with back buttons are peak

      sp also bp?

360 has a good comfy shape but if you retro/indie game symmetrical is outright better and a good dpad is absolutely needed. (disc dpads are fine but the 360 dpad is shit underneath is the issue)

      Terrible d-pad

Drops A button inputs and cheaper build quality than 360

      [...]
Also bad D-pad, and also has cheaper build quality

Still waiting on the perfect controller

Dual Sense d-pad is actually good, doesn't accidentally hit diags and input is fast....but no back buttons, balls battery to have dumbshit extra features, and granted I do prefer a disc dpad like Sega/Vita. Dual Sense is the well frick I can't find better controller, but its not as bad. I would trade most of its stupid features for some back buttons tho.

I understand there's probably more of a comfort/convenience mindset that went towards this design, but it doesn't look as fun as the 360 controller. For lack of a better term, the 360 has soul. But I suppose it doesn't matter since you can buy a knockoff 360 that will connect to a series x or whatever.
      >tldr
The series x controller looks to modern.

Is the series controller better when it comes to its d pad?

Significantly. Fully microswitched and the circular shape is arguably better especially for things like fighting games.

          >microswitched
          >circular shape

i bought into one of these and it's just a shittier Sega circle pad
it's like it's designed by white people who just used the Genesis and Saturn controllers like they were Nintendo and moved their thumb across instead of just pivoting the pad
made me really have to take every opinion about controllers with a grain of salt, like it's coming from people who can barely throw a hadouken and say they play fighting games
somehow fricking mice and keyboards have better reviewers, it's crazy

Having used both for my PC for several years it's SEX > 360 >>>>> ONE
Haven't tested anything else. But that's as far as Xbox.
360 feels nicer to grip than SEX but SEX is better in every other category IMO.

So it's physically demanding, feels good for a few minutes then becomes a chore before feeling intensely good & then leads to feelings of not wanting to be around the dpad after you're done using it?

I had a lot of issues with build quality. I went through three in a year and a half and they all found new ways to fail. I was disappointed because I FINALLY retired my 360 controller and just assumed they wouldn't frick with a a good thing.
The first one had a shitty seam and right where you put your finger tips was a sharp edge of plastic that would murder your fingers if you played for any length of time.

Needs hall effect sticks to be complete as we know it. Too bad the whole point of first party controllers these day is to fail in at most 2 years of regular use. They cost like $5 to make, so they make serious money out of them.

Are you thinking the PS3 or PS4? PS4 felt tiny but PS5 is decent sized, its bigger than 8bitdo. Or was Andre the giant your dad or something.

The almost controller. God tier battery, good layout for modern games, but no analogue and mid tier dpad, but I can respect that it went all in for modern 3D over splitting the difference for retro. Use to use it combo with a SNES usb controller to cover both bases, but I got lazy and wanted all games in one and the no analogue was rough in space games. They were on to something with this one for the first time since the SNES, pity Nintendo shit canned the design to copy Xbox on the Switch.

  11. 5 months ago
    Anonymous

It's hot garbage that is intentionally incompatible with its main competitors despite aping 95% of its design and that's largely because the 360 was the Extend and Extinguish phase of Microsoft's bullshit, where they leverage their market share to get people to adopt and work around their standards and APIs.
The only reason that it is pointless to buy anything newer is because Microsoft will continuously hold everyone else back and because normalgays imprinted so hard on this controller during 7th gen that they won't move to anything newer.

If controllers were progressing properly like they were before 7th gen, then this controller would be SNES controller tier obsolete.

A shame to hear the dpad design hasn't improved. I assume the hall effect sticks in that at least avoid the other common issue of random inputs in the opposite direction too large to deadzone out when releasing the sticks.

Most dpads are still better than Xbox, except maybe a few of Nintendo's shittier ones. I have the Pro 2 which is a good middle ground, dpad is good but not best, buttons are fine, shape is good, back buttons, etc. Only issue is in some way I hold I press my middle finger against the button of the left trigger which gets swore. Probably more of a me issue than anything. I would spring for the overpriced 200 dollar controllers with back buttons, but all of them have issues as well and at 200 bucks they shouldn't be rivaled by a 50 dollar controller. Sometimes I use a dual sense, its good but for 70 should have better battery and back buttons.

You are approaching this all wrong. If you are using a d-pad often enough to warrant a controller, just buy an OG SNES controller and an adapter. D-pad wise it's as good as it gets. And it's light, really, really light. That there is the key. Combo controllers are great in theory, but lacking in actual practice because the weight gets in the way to how the old style d-pad units used to be.

Agreed. Snoy really should bend the knee and have offset joysticks. I like PlayStation more than Xbox but the controller thing is a huge glaring weakness.

Sony even has better quality of controllers. More durable and more precision on the joysticks. But bad ergonomics more than cancel that out.
