The House of Steg is an honored house for both it's stalwart defense of the land and it's uncompromising ferocity of it's spiky warfare.

Did they even know dinosaurs existed in the times of heraldry?

Fossils had been discovered since before civilization. Protoceratops have been proposed as the origin for the Griffons. Mammoth skulls were thought to be Cyclops skulls. Fossilized teeth were believed to be dragon teeth in Chyna. Medieval people probably thought of them as dragon skulls or somesuch shit.

Mammoths overlapped significantly with humans, indeed, they participate significantly in the myths of Siberian peoples. Mammoth bone is so ubiquitous in northern Russia that mammoth bone carving became a traditional art.

Not the pygmy ones in greece, where the myth came from.

IIRC the word mammoth is even siberian in origin. Means something like 'earth-swimmer' since they'd find the bones along riverbanks and glacial areas and assume the beasts swam through the earth until breaching the surface, at which point the surface air killed them.

Close. The word is derived from Mansi "mangont" - earth horn. This refers to the tusks, which were considered horns and frequently found in the earth.
