>compression is now a lost art >there's a universe where devs continued refining the compression techniques Angel Studios pioneered and modern games don't exceed 10 GB even with 8k textures and multiple language packs.
It's unnecessary. We don't have to fit games on some limited physical media, and everyone has gigabit+ internet access. Why force inline decompression on download or decompression during play when you don't have to?
Because companies are trying hard to push for games to be digital only, and if you’re on console especially it’s annoying to get a game which eats up a large chunk of your memory and you have to start deleting other games to make space. There’s no benefit for console memory getting bigger if the games are also unnecessarily larger and you end up with the same total number of games installed.
>Go to friends house, he organized a lan play Master chief collection game night >his Xbox demands a 27 gigabyte update to launch the game, with an estimated download time of 4 hours because his internet sucks >he says "I'm not doing that, cancel the update" >that goes and just deletes the entire game off of his hard drive without warning >now it's a 12 hour download >tell him "hey, I just updated my MCC the other night on an xbox I have, I can run to my house just down the street and get it" >power it on to make sure everything is good >console immediately demands a system update that takes 20 minutes, won't let me do it later or turn off the system >it took us over an hour and a half just to play some fricking Halo
This shit is why I'm a Nintendogay when it comes to consoles
Shit goes wrong everytime I see an Xbox being used in a local gaming event, it's crazy how unfriendly this console is considering the main appeal of a console should be convenience and ease of use compared to PC.
Couldn't agree more Anon. It's beyond stupid. When anyone thinks everyone the planet has top tier internet, this is the crap I think of. Let alone most PCs don't have SSDs. Gaming companies need to get their shit together and compress shit. We are long past the day of getting a complete game at launch for "70" dollars. Even typing this out is making me angry.

I'll never understand the moronation of needing access to multiple languages of subtitles and audiowhen they go unused 99.9% of the time. It should always be an optional download.
simple answer is literally EA, Activision and certain other publishers trying to take up as much room on your system as humanly possible to dis-incentivize even bothering with other games so you play their shit.
Because consolegays don't want options. They want to plug in their game and not have to deal with anything even if it's detrimental to their experience. It was only towards the end of last gen that Xbox and Playstation even started allowing users to have performance/quality mode options which are just resolution changes.
>game is 80 gigabytes >half of it is uncompressed audio >meanwhile textures are either blurry or compressed to shit and the game struggles loading them in real time
the game is fricking 320x240p and the expansion pak doesn't even get it up to 480p, at least not consistently. it doesn't need high texture resolution because you functionally wouldn't be able to see it on the CRT displays of the time.
it's not impressive for what it was. it's impressive for how it was. they managed compress everything but two scenes, plus the game, all enemies, encounters, scenes, voice acting, etc from a pair of 500mb CD-ROMs onto a fricking 64mb cartridge, and still have bonus features that arguably make it better in certain ways than the original like the Randomizer.
yes, fundamentally it's the "worst port" by nature of more issues, compromises, choppy frickery with the cutscenes, but actually knowing what it was for the time, for porting 2 discs onto one cart that was like an eighth of the size, and still being perfectly playable? that's insane and hard for folks to understand nowadays
I looked it up after that post, yeah you swap discs and most of the game data is loaded from the first; two discs together mostly came up to 700mb. still, for 700mb altogether down to 64 on one cart and only cutting a single FMV out (that was mostly identical besides the voice lines over top of it), that's not bad
N64 was fine. It didn't beat the Playstation and I'd say the Saturn beats both of them in 2D hands down, but the console wars of the 90's are over 20 years ago, man.

I'm just the messenger. Don't lump me in with those 50 year old autistic losers.
>People still dont know what Iwata ACTUALLY did
He didnt compress the game, in fact they already had a compression program in the game. The one Iwata made actually took up MORE space but made the game uncompress FASTER.
Its not the "not retro" shit, its more of a "Nintendo bad" situation, the N64 being beloved despite its flaws makes bitter contrarians angrier.
Also /vr/ is home of butthurt segagays that are still fighting decade old consolewars.
I thought only that one autistic Saturngay hated the N64. You know the one.
Oh yeah I know that sperg, but there's usually more idiots other than him that come to shit up anything related to the N64.
Why the frick are the retro Segagays such butthurt shitheads anyway? You can play both consoles, they aren't expensive beasts like the Xbox or PS5 where if you buy one, you'll very likely stick to one and cope and seethe about the other. Sega was good for fast arcade type games, and SNES good for longer console type games.

Because they can't accept that Sega lost and left the console market while their so-called nemesis is still alive and doing fine, the fact there's weekly HOW CAN WE SAVE THE SATURN/DREAMCAST threads should tell you something.

well they can start by actually making new games for those consoles, like a bunch of autists are doing for the NES, SNES and N64. Master System a shit, but the genesis and saturn were great consoles for me when i found them in a flea market bargin bin as a child.

The Genesis has been seeing people making ports and remakes of various games, to be fair. Some that come to the top of my head: >Windjammers >a redone version of Sunset Riders (not a romhack, it's being remade from scratch) >that weird SotN reimagined project (though I haven't seen anything about it in a while) >Shinobi GG remake (same as above since it's the same guy) >Metal Gear 1 >Final Fight >Konami's Simpsons beat em up

Isn't it mostly euro trash that either never had a chance to own a SNES or N64 or they got terrible PAL versions? Always saying shit like sega or PC had superior games like (insert game nobody has ever heard of) is much better than the greatest games ever made.

A lot of times yes, Euros probably liked the Sega Genesis so much because laggy shitty PAL clock speeds of consoles meant Sonic wasn't the only thing running at the speed of Molasses. Have you SEEN pal gameplay comparisons? It's absolutely unbearable, if I was European I'd be fricking livid that I got arbitrarily screwed in every way by vidya between censorship and slowness.
a fictional mostly bug free AAA is where the standard is at in this point in time
>six years of development
Yeah no shit it’ll be fine tuned. They even said that the game was basically finished in 2022 but they did a whole year of polish.
I hate nuZelda but >Six years of development instead of ten like many major AAA studios >Bug free >Bug free while basically allows you to make whatever you want >Has no stupid restrictions during gameplay >Moderate marketing compared with the average AAA game >Had a really good reception beyond the occasional hater (like me) >People actually bought it and played it
A lot of AAA games wish to be TotK
>Six years of development and $70 for DLC >The game not instantly exploding like Starfield or Cyberpunk 2077 is now "bug free", it's still a laggy piece of shit with awful resolution >basically whatever you want after you spend tens hours grinding zonaite, also wings last about 30 seconds, also bosses just destroy your machines for free, also they'll despawn if you look away from it for a moment >Oh, you want to play the game? Here you go, here's a shitty, boring 2 hour tutorial sky island so you can waste another half hour on Purah's shitty boring chores to get the chores >marketing was entirely "we had to delay it again, sorry gaijin" for four years >paid for positive reviews like never before, irreperably destroying Zelda discussion >people pirated it en-mass and whiners were mass reporting early players to the FBI
Frick you, TOTK is the worst major release of 2023 besides Starfield. Pikmin 4 mogs it so hard it's just funny
It's not the best option in 2023 but is still totally playable. I mean, whatever you wrote this post on can undoubtedly emulate a PS1 game.
There's also an easy way to play game backups on the GameCube now without actually modding it, but you need to buy this thing that plugs into serial port 2 to read games from a microSD card and have at least one exploitable game and a save for it in order to get it to work. It's called the SD2SP2 if you're interested.
To this very day, I think that the same porting team could have gotten FFVII to work. I think some sections would have to be seriously altered - maybe done with stills and text for FMVs, or cutscenes replicated in game with the overworld models, I dunno - but I think it could have been done.
on one hand FF7 has much simpler models and assets to work with and frankly the character and battle assets are right up the N64's alley, plus the lack of voice acting goes a long way com. on the other hand the vast majority of 3 discs was easily the FMVs and I dunno how much of that could be compressed reasonably
>on the other hand the vast majority of 3 discs was easily the FMVs
more like all of them.
FFVII had a copy of the whole game on each disc but different FMVs
I made this thread as a joke and didn't care for it and it gets many replies with a good discussion. Meanwhile I make threads that i actually want to talk about and nobody replies and gets archived.
what they did was genuinely impressive
Literally this anon is correct, also how it ran itself wasn't as bad as I expected all on a tiny little cartridge was insane to me.
Current Ganker is too young to understand what you are talking about.
man I wish I was old so I'd get this post... Oh nevermind I'd rather be young and not get it
It's an impressively done port. People pretty much thought FMV wasn't doable on N64, because of file sizes.
>compression is now a lost art
>there's a universe where devs continued refining the compression techniques Angel Studios pioneered and modern games don't exceed 10 GB even with 8k textures and multiple language packs.
It's unnecessary. We don't have to fit games on some limited physical media, and everyone has gigabit+ internet access. Why force inline decompression on download or decompression during play when you don't have to?
Because no game worth playing is over 100 GB.
No game worth playing is under 100GB.
stupidest shit I've read all week
>No game worth playing is under 100GB.
Most zoomers actually think this
No they don't
I'm 42. Since anything over 2 is a boomer, I guess it wraps back around and I'm a zoomer.
Sorry you're poor (not really. You can die for all I care).
So you only play cowadooty and one of like ten ubishit open world games?
Have you ever played a game that isn't AAA slop released in the past decade?
A good one?

Of all the things that could've aged poorly from this, I didn't think that "Halo 2k19" would be the one.
And also so it's harder for third-worlders to pirate their games, a 100+ gigabyte torrent can take 6+ hours even with good internet and good hardware.
That's why repacks that cut the useless thirdy languages exist.
Because consolegays don't want options. They want to plug in their game and not have to deal with anything even if it's detrimental to their experience. The very same, before they became Rockstar San Diego.
>game is 80 gigabytes
>half of it is uncompressed audio
>meanwhile textures are either blurry or compressed to shit and the game struggles loading them in real time
Not just keeping FMVs, having a built-in randomizer was really cool.
Aside for the wonky compressed FMVs, the game looked and even sounded better somehow.
Better than what?
i do wonder what could've happened if it had the Disk Drive to double up that 64MB to 128MB, but that shit bombed so oh well
yeah when people had actual chops passion and technical skill
>reducing texture resolution size is somehow making programmers lose their minds....
kek
the game is fricking 320x240p and the expansion pak doesn't even get it up to 480p, at least not consistently. it doesn't need high texture resolution because you functionally wouldn't be able to see it on the CRT displays of the time.
you are a fricking moron
you tell me if high resolution assets would be seeable like this
PS1 emulation on base settings with no enhancements
n64 on base settings emulation
now imagine these blurred even further with an actual CRT on real hardware
WHO ARE YA? WHAT'RE YA DOIN' HERE?
Was it worth even getting the Bowgun from him? I always just left the room
nah
dont pick up any ammo or weapons until the RPD so you can kill brad zombie for the single action army
This was a drop in the bucket compared to the FMV sizes. They made an entirely new codec to compress them so they'd fit on the N64.
All zoomers deserve the rope

it's not impressive for what it was. it's impressive for how it was. they managed compress everything but two scenes, plus the game, all enemies, encounters, scenes, voice acting, etc from a pair of 500mb CD-ROMs onto a fricking 64mb cartridge, and still have bonus features that arguably make it better in certain ways than the original like the Randomizer.

Sure, but the main reason it was 2 doscs originally was because of the fmv

i like that this port makes /vr/ absolutely angry
I'd like to hear why.
its on the N64, that's enough for /vr/ to hate it.
>N64
>makes /vr/ seethe
why? it's rightfully retro in current year
Retro doesn't mean obsolete and functioning equipment. It means "MY CHILDHOOD FROM THE 80s" and don't you forget it.
N64 was fine. It didn't beat the Playstation and I'd say the Saturn beats both of them in 2D hands down, but the console wars of the 90's are over 20 years ago, man.

It was 2 discs crammed into one cartridge
