It's really amazing that FNAF came out around the time everyone was saying jumpscares are the cheapest form of horror but those same people fell in love with FNAF. Honestly the jumpscares were grating but I really enjoyed the ambience of the pizzaria and the anxious feeling of getting jumpscared was scarier than when it actually came.

People are really bad at articulating their problems.
Jumpscares are not inherently bad. What people dislike are fakeouts. A lot of bad horror games rely on haunted house style jumpscares, I.E. you get ooga booga'd at random with a scary image which then goes away and nothing happens. This is the problem, the "nothing happens" part.
The Resident Evil 1 dog jumpscare is iconic and still remembered fondly to this day. Because the dogs actually ATTACK after spooking you.
FNAF does it right because the jumpscare is death. You spend the entire gameplay building up tension, and then that tension culminates in one of two ways: the victory jingle or the jumpscare death. It's not random or arbitrary, you know you fricked up but desperately want to delay it to see if you can squeeze a win through.
It gets to a point where you know exactly when you're gonna be jumpscared so you just roll your eyes and keep one hand on the volume knob so you don't get your eardrums blown out when it comes.
